Personality Personality : "Personality" is one of the classic chapter headings in the field of psychology ◆ and yet is surprisingly difficult to define. It is used so widely ◆ and in such differing ways ◆ that any singular definition must either be confusingly inclusive or misleadingly specific. Perhaps a definitional approach to personality should be avoided altogether ◆ rather personality should be understood in relation to the schools of thought which characterize it (trait theories ◆ psychoanalytic theories and so on). In its broadest sense personality can be said to be the sum total of all the behavioral and mental characteristics by means of which an individual is recognized as being unique. Personality psychology
Personality psychology is concerned with differences between individuals; it overlaps with developmental and social psychology to some extent. General orientations within personality psychology are the following:
  • Trait theories propose traits as underlying properties; as such traits account for behavioural consistencies and stable individual differences between persons.
  • Situationism argues that behaviour is mainly determined by the situation rather than by internal personality types or traits.
  • Interactionism postulates that observed behaviour is a function of the interaction between the traits of an individual and the specific characteristics of the situation including traits of other persons who are present. This implied the possibility of describing and forecasting not only behavior of IM types, but relationships between such types as well. These relationships are conditioned by informational exchange between identical IM functions located at different positions in the IM model of types. Such description is an advance in the sphere of sciences about human being. Large practical importance of socionics is obvious compared to the traditional psychology, which possesses descriptions (although incomplete) of personality types, but lacks descriptions and prognosis of human relationships. Thus it became possible to resolve problems of compatibility of partners in family, collectives and in business; to create steady, united groups for managing different tasks in any sphere of human activity. Further development of socionics demonstrates the necessity of giving more precise definition to its initial concepts and forming new theoretical proconditions of practical value to extend the sphere of application of socionics. The fundamental part of this works has been performed by scientists of the Kiev school of socionics, mostly collaborators of International Institute of Socionics (IIS). Now let us regard the fundamental results achieved by collaborators of IIS and the directions of its activity.

Personality psychology is a branch of psychology which studies personality and individual difference processes - that which makes us into a person. A large part of the work of personality psychologists has been defining what is, and what is not, personality. A scientific consensus has not been achieved. The most common models incorporate four or five broad dimensions or factors. The least controversial dimension, observed as far back as the ancient Greeks, is:
    • extraversion (outgoing and people-oriented vs. shy and task-oriented)
The so-called five-factor models or Big Five models add the following four factors:
    • emotional stability (calm, unperturbable, optimistic vs. emotionally reactive, prone to negative emotions), agreeableness (affable, friendly, conciliatory vs. aggressive , dominant, disagreeable), conscientiousness (dutiful, planful, and orderly vs. spontaneous, flexible, and unreliable), and openness (open to new ideas and change vs. traditional and staid).

    Ph.D. in Psychology
(Area of Concentration: Personality) The course offerings in personality psychology offer a balance between theory-oriented basic research and problem-oriented applied research and should be a good preparation for those who intend to pursue a career in research and/or the academe or in applied personality fields. Faculty members and graduate students actively conduct research on a broad range of topics in personality psychology, with strong emphasis on applied issues like the environment, health, industry and organizations, political psychology, and women and sexuality. During their first years in the program, Ph.D. students take a core of courses designed to provide comprehensive coverage of conceptual and methodological issues in psychology. In the succeeding years, students enlist in advanced courses and seminars in which particular topics are considered intensively. The program culminates in a comprehensive examination in three areas (concepts and methods, the major area of specialization, and a minor area) and in the doctoral dissertation research.
