Clinical Neuropsychology Website

The American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology (ABCN) is the member board of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) which is responsible for administration of the examination for competence in the specialty of Clinical Neuropsychology. ABPP is the senior parent board for the professional of psychology and was established in 1947, with ABCN being incorporated in 1981. To learn more regarding examination procedures, please explore the website for current information and application instructions. Once an individual passes the ABCN examination and becomes board certified in the specialty of Clinical Neuropsychology, they then usually join the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology (AACN), which is restricted to board certified Clinical Neuropsychologists. For a directory of members , and for further information regarding the AACN , please click the button at the top right which will take you to their website.

The undergraduate program is for students with an interest in interdisciplinary fields like biopsychology, neuropsychology, ethology, or neuroscience.
http://www.emory.edu/COLLEGE/NBB/index.html
euroscience and Behavioral Biology (NBB) is an inter-departmental undergrad program offering a Bachelor of Science and combining the expertise, enthusiasm, and commitment of a large and diverse group of faculty from many departments. The NBB major combines behavioral biology with the study of how the nervous system controls body functions and cognition. Using the concepts of evolution as a unifying theme, the major represents a unique interdisciplinary synthesis of the fields of Neuroscience and Behavior and provides a breadth and focus not found in traditional Biology, Psychology, Biopsychology, Neuroscience, or Anthropology programs. "These traditional disciplines ask similar questions about brain and behavior, but often from different points of view," says Paul Lennard, director of the NBB program. "The interdisciplinary nature of NBB degree brings new insights to our students."
The NBB Program strives to build a community among faculty and students, adding a mentor program that pairs undergraduates with graduate students; a clinical neurology rotatation where undergraduates pair with fourth year medical students, a study abroad exchange program with University of St Andrews, and a very active honors society, Nu Rho Psi.
After graduation, there are numerous career choices for NBB majors including animal behavior, medicine, law, business, biotechnology, public health, science writing, occupational therapy, psychiatry, and various graduate studies. One of the strengths of NBB is the strong advising program which, coupled with the wide selection of available courses, allows each student to "create" the academic program best suited to their interests and future plans.

Neuropsychology is a branch of psychology that aims to understand how the structure and function of the brain relates to specific psychological processes. It is strongly scientific in its approach and shares an information processing view of the mind with cognitive psychology and cognitive science It is one of the most eclectic of the psychological disciplines, overlapping at times with areas such as neuroscience philosophy (particularly philosophy of mind neurology psychiatry and computer science (particularly by making use of artificial neural networks In practice neuropsychologists tend to work in either academia (involved in pure research), clinical settings (involved in assessing or treating patients with neuropsychological problems - see neurocognitive deficit ), forensic settings (often assessing people for legal reasons or court cases or working with offenders) or industry (often as consultants where neuropsychological knowledge is applied to product design). Approaches
Experimental neuropsychology is an approach which uses methods from experimental psychology to uncover the relationship between the nervous system and cognitive function. The majority of work involves studying healthy humans in a laboratory setting, although a minority of researchers may conduct animal experiments. Human work in this area often takes advantage of specific features of our nervous system (for example that visual information presented to a specific

History
The modern science of cognitive neuropsychology emerged during the . However there have been a series of influential studies during the last two centuries which have been critical in laying the foundations for studying brain impairment with a view to understanding normal psychological function. The case of Phineas Gage is one of the earliest examples where a specific brain injury gave clues to the function of a particular brain area. Gage obtained his injury after an accident during the construction of part of a railroad in in Vermont . Gage was setting an explosive charge when the charge accidentally detonated, firing a 4 foot iron rod through his cheek and out the top of his head. Remarkably Gage survived, but with extensive damage to the ventromedial areas of his frontal lobes. After the accident Gage changed from a responsible, hard working foreman into a brutish and capricious individual. This provided some of the earliest evidence that specific area of the frontal lobes may be involved in the psychology of

The short article, "Neuropsychology 101: An Introduction" , introduces essential information about understanding behavior from the perspective of brain structure, function, and disease. Additional articles provide information about neuropsychological assessments , both full examination and screening examination . The article on functional domains discusses in somewhat more detail the kinds of cognitive behaviors the neuropsychologist examines. Finally, a list of commonly used neuropsychological tests provides brief descriptions of the tools used to evaluate functional domains.

The brainthe master control for the entire body and the starting point for virtually all behavioris probably one of the most complex and challenging topics for anyone to study. Its myriad neurons, dozens of chemical messengers, and infinite interconnections provide the fascination that attracts neuroscientists to study it.
