"In sum, the heart of humanistic psychology is a matter of personal involvement in the struggle to fathom the meaning of being a human being... It's ultimately about coming to live more powerfully, more poetically... with a greater cognizance of our lot as human beings... It's about hearing the poetry in things, as well as learning to speak the poetry in things. It's about allowing our thinking and sense of discovery to stir us to the very core and marrow, and in that moment to step into the strange, tragic ecstasy of a deeply passionate world-relatedness." Eric Dodson
"Those thinkers in whom all stars move in cyclic orbits are not the most profound. Whoever looks into himself as into vast space and carries galaxies within himself, also knows how irregular all galaxies are; they lead into the chaos and labyrinth of existence..." Friedrich Nietzsche

Humanistic psychology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Humanistic psychology is concerned with the subjective experience of human beings and views using quantitative methods in the study of the human mind and behaviour as misguided and instead stresses qualitative research It emerged in the in reaction to both behaviorism and psychoanalysis . It stresses a phenomenological view of human experience and seeks to understand human beings and their behavior by conducting qualitative research. The humanistic approach has its roots in existentialist thought (see Heidegger Nietzsche Sartre and Kierkegaard ). The founding theorists behind this school of thought are Abraham Maslow , who presented a ' hierarchy of human needs Carl Rogers , who created and developed ' client centered therapy ' and Fritz and Laura Perls who helped create and develop Gestalt therapy . Gestalt psychologists claim to consider behaviour holistically - "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" - although critics such as Karl Popper have presented forceful arguments against the proposition that entities can be apprehended as wholes. Humanistic psychologists use a narrow definition of humanism . The American Humanist Association , for example, has had as members many psychologists whom humanistic psychologists would not consider humanist, B. F. Skinner

Humanistic Psychology and Christianity
A Review of:
The Emperor's New Clothes: The Naked Truth About the New Psychology (1985, Crossway Books, by William Kirk Kilpatrick) "When psychologists don the cloak of expert in areas in which they have no more authority than the average manthat is, when they invade religion, ethics, and politicsthey will often be found...to be wearing very little, and sometimes nothing at all." The Emperor's New Clothes Reviewed by Linda Ames Nicolosi This little out-of-print book is more than fifteen years old, yet it remains well worth reading. It offers a vivid and eye-opening explanation of how much of psychology echoes Christianitybecause it not only borrows, but simultaneously erodes, some of that faith's foundational tenets. In fact, it is ironic, Kilpatrick notes, that "the wholesale importation of psychological ideas into Christianity would not have occurred if psychology did not have a Christian tone and appearance." Kilpatrick, who is a psychologist himself, isn't suggesting that his profession simply be thrown away. There is much that is useful in it, he says. However, "wheat and weeds have grown up together." Along with psychology's very respectable work, "there is also adrift in the psychology community an abundance of speculation, wishful thinking, contradictory ideas, doubletalk, and ideology disguised as science." And it is because psychology looks so much like Christianity that many Christian educators, pastors and thinkers have opened their doors to its ideas in order to make their faiths more relevant to contemporary culture.

Humanistic Psychology I have no doubt whatever that most people live, whether physically, intellectually or morally, in a very restricted circle of their potential being. They make use of a very small portion of their possible consciousness... much like a man who, out of his whole bodily organism, should get into a habit of using only his little finger... We all have reservoirs of life to draw upon, of which we do not dream. ~ William James Humanistic Psychology (or The Third Force) was a movement in psychological inquiry and psychotherapy that evolved in response to the inadequacies of the two psychologies existing at the time ~ Pyschoanalytic-Freudian and Behavioristic-Skinnerian. The focus here was and is on human potentialities and self-actualization. It is often combined with existential philosophy (humanistic-existential approach) and is the developmental gateway to spiritual and transpersonal psychology

http://www.webrenovators.com/psych/HumanisticPsychology.htm
Humanistic Psychology Humanistic psychology, or the “Third Force” of psychology as Maslow coined it, began in the late 1950’s in the United States. With a focus on what makes human beings uniquely human and using psychology to deal with the real problems of human life, Humanistic Psychology steered away from the abnormal and mechanistic philosophies of the day and concentrated on a fuller concept of what it means to be human. Building from the “first Force”, or Behaviorism, and the “second Force”, Psychoanalysis, Humanistic Psychology attempted to study essentially human phenomena such as love, self-consciousness, self-determination, personal freedom, greed, lust for power, cruelty, and morality. Most importantly, Humanistic Psychology began to break down the societal stigmas attached to “therapy” and to open the benefits of the science of psychology to relatively healthy people who are interested in exploring the farther reaches of human potential. In 1964, three years after the Journal of Humanistic Psychology first appeared, the first invitational conference of Humanistic Psychology was held at old Saybrook, Connecticut. There, Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers, Rollo May and other notable psychologists critiqued the shortcomings of “The First and Second Forces” of psychology.

Humanistic Theories
Humanistic psychology or the "third force" arose in reaction to the perceived sterility of behavioral explanations of personality. Maslow, discussed elsewhere, personified the movement as he abandoned his training as a behaviorist after having a child. He simply could no longer explain the totality of human experience through stimulus-response methods. However, it is Carl Rogers who probably advanced the cause of humanistic psychology the furthest. His client-centered therapy and person-centered psychology demonstrated the extent of the differences between humanistic psychology and both behavioral and psychodynamic approaches to personality. His optimistic outlook on the human condition, combined with his belief in humans as rational creatures beset by irrational needs characterized his views. Coming to understand the power of those irrational needs on one's behavior was the effort of humanistic therapy. In general, humanistic psychologists attempt to delve deeply into the lives and minds of their clients. Their methods are unlike those of other personality theorist and are often described as phenomenological. Another way to characterize humanistic psychology is through its emphasis on the self. Thus, constructs like: self-concept, self-esteem, and self-image are part of their vocabulary. Society's concern with such concepts today in settings like schools is testimony to the success of humanistic psychology. URLs

Individual, Existential, and Humanistic Psychology Dr. C. George Boeree Although we usually consider Freud the founder of personality psychology, there would be many others to come. First, there would be those who basically followed in his footsteps, like his daugher Anna Freud and her student Erik Erikson, and others who would develop theories not unlike Freud's, such as Carl Jung. Second, there were the Behaviorists like Pavlov and Skinner, who took the point of view that personality was nothing more than the sum total of all our habits. And third, there were many psychologists who fit in neither the Freudian nor the Behaviorist camps, but developed theories that emphasized things like consciousness, free will, social concern, and creativity. In this chapter, we will look at three of those psychologists and their theories: Alfred Adler's Individual Psychology, Existential Psychology as represented by Ludwig Binswanger, and Humanistic Psychology, as represented by Carl Rogers. Alfred Adler Freud had a hard time getting along with his more independent minded colleagues, several of whom left his circle. Over time, these colleagues developed their own theories and therapies, had their own circles and students, and went on to contribute to the field. One of the most influential was Alfred Adler.
