A practical approach Explaining Gestalt Picture a jigsaw with only one piece missing: we have an inherent desire to fit that piece, and an innate sense of satisfaction when the picture is complete. This drive to completion, wholeness, or Gestalt, is what propels us to deal with unfinished issues in our lives and to experience a nagging sense of discomfort until that is done. Gestalt therapy uses awareness to identify these incomplete parts. Then to assist a person towards the realisation of wholeness, new forms of behaviour are experimented with, feelings felt and released, and thinking patterns brought to consciousness and updated. This is done in the focus of the present moment, allowing liveliness and freshness to enter old and stale experiences. An important part of the work involves unifying the 'splits' within that literally 'tear us apart'; sinner/saint, coward/bully, miser/spendthrift. Rather than projecting one side of these onto others, we can integrate them in ourselves, thus becoming more whole and capable of balanced living. Taking responsibility for the disowned parts of our self can be very challenging, but it is ultimately a very freeing and empowering experience. Maturity is seen as being able to distinguish the nourishing from the toxic influences in our environment, and to act accordingly. This allows us to cope with the new, the unexpected, the dangerous and sometimes damaging events which come our way. Often however, our family setting has taught us dysfunctional coping responses. Gestalt work identifies our particular way of distorting or avoiding contact, and then assists us to restore clear boundaries and thereby establish healthy contact with self and other. The process allows each person to re-establish trust in their inherent wisdom, knowing when to come close to another and when to let go, person by person and moment by moment.

Dies mag zum Teil daran liegen, daß diese sich in hohem Maße skatologischer Motive und fäkalsprachlicher Ausdrücke bedienen und daß, wie Juan Goytisolo behauptet, "[...] los críticos y estudiosos de la obra de Quevedo acostumbran a esquivar con un mohín de disgusto la obsesión escatológica del escritor o la despachan con unas breves frases condescientes, cuando no francamente condenatorias[...]” SONETO esta antipoda faz, cuyo hemisfero este que siendo solamente cero, le multiplica y parte por entero todo buen abaquista veneciano; el resquicio barbado de melenas; esta cima del vicio y del insulto; O bwohl die skatologischen Gedichte Quevedos nicht zu den kanonischen zählen, genossen diese Art von Lyrik und das Bild des obszönen Quevedo seinerzeit und auch heutzutage eine große Popularität, besonders in Bevölkerungsschichten, die wohl weder Quevedo gelesen hatten noch überhaupt lesen konnten. Goytisolo illustriert dieses Phänomen anhand einer Anekdote aus seiner Kindheit: "Al concluir la guerra civil, la sirvienta que se hizo cargo de mí y mis hermanos y nos cuidó con el amor y la solicitud de una madre, solía referirnos la historia de un tal Quevedo que, habiéndose bajado las calzas para defecar en un lugar público, de espaldas a los viandantes, fue sorprendido en dicha posición por un distinguido caballero italiano. Heute schreibe ich schlechte Drehbücher für miserable Serien. Programmiere ein wenig auf dem Computer, und daneben suche ich Aufgaben, die mich davor bewahren, als Alkoholiker zu enden." Dieses eigenwillige Anti-Drogen-Programm ist für Marco Biondi der Fahrschein durch die nadelsüchtige Nachtseite Zürichs in die eigene Vergangenheit als Aktivist bei den Jugendkrawallen Anfang der 80-er Jahre und wieder zurück zu den Leichen im Keller seiner damaligen Mitstreiter, die nach Abwurf ihres ideologischen Ballast heute in den seichten Gewässern ihrer Karrieren dahindümpeln. Biondi ist Treibgut einer Jugendbewegung, die zwischen den Drogen Geld und Heroin verpufft ist. Sein gestalterisches Potential schluckt ein digitaler Fußballclub auf seinem Heim-PC, seine Träume der Alptraum der Depression. Der Auftrag, den Verbleib des verschwundenen Martin Boxlers ausfindig zu machen, entpuppt sich, nachdem dieser tot aufgefunden wird, immer mehr als Abrechnung mit den Gespenstern von Biondis eigener jugendbewegter Vergangenheit, die er lange Zeit in Alkohol zu ertränken versucht hatte. Er weiß, daß er, wenn er diesen Fall lösen will, sich diesmal dem Showdowndem er damals ausgewichen ist, stellen muß. Andernfalls hat er den Depressionen, die an seinem Lebensnerv nagen, nichts mehr entgegen zu setzten. Mit Marco Biondi versucht sich Roger Graf aus dem seiner Meinung nach zu engen Korsett des schnodderigen Philip-Maloney-Krimis freizuschreiben und einen Schritt in Richtung atmosphärischer Großstadtroman zu tun. Schade eigentlich, daß der Schritt in die E-Literatur immer mit dem Gestus des Abschieds von der U-Literatur verzwurbelt werden muß. Als Romanfigur ist der schweizer Marlowe Maloney sicher noch nicht ausgereizt, auch wenn der Name für eine eigenständige Entwicklung eine schwere Hypothek sein kann.

STAGES IN A GESTALT THERAPY SESSION AND AN EXAMINATION OF COUNSELOR INTERVENTIONS Martin S. Fiebert California State University, Long Beach Introduction Gestalt therapy alerts us to the interrelationship between awareness and energy. When awareness is scattered and bound up in unknown feelings and thoughts, energy flow is diminished throughout one's personality. A Gestalt counselor, by suggesting the practice of certain "experiments" in awareness focusing, aids and amplifies a client's effort to free him- or herself from energy blocks mentally, emotionally, and physically. From this perspective, every psychological problem can be explored and resolved as a polarized conflict between two aspects in personality. Four stages in the unfolding of a therapeutic session and corresponding counselor behaviors which serve to guide a conflict into awareness, expose its ramifications in a client's external and internal experience, and aid in its resolution will be examined. Stage 1: Emergence of the Problem Each client, each session is unique an interplay of skill, experience, levels of growth, actual needs and random factors present in the encounter between participants. The subtle blueprint of this first stage involves a client bringing into awareness with increasing intensity a major conflict in the "here and now" of a counseling session. Initial interventions guide the client's attention to his or her immediate experience the "what and how" of behavior and away from speculations as to causes the "whys" for such action. During this process, clients are encouraged to assume increasing responsibility (ability to respond) for individual thoughts, feelings, sensations; and to experience the intimate, basic connection between verbal and nonverbal behaviors.
