Welcome to The GESTALT Workbench Abstract Large amounts of 'raw' genomic sequence data already exist and continue to grow exponentially. Many tools are available for automated analysis of these data by comparison to known sequences or by pattern recognition. One of the hardest problems is how to present the sequence data and its derived annotation in an intuitive way. We present here a workbench for analysis of large-scale genomic sequence data, with strong emphasis on the production of enriched graphical representation of the analysed data. The GESTALT Workbench (GEnomic Sequence Total Analysis and Lookup Tool) can execute a variety of external analysis programmes (e.g. for gene recognition) as well as internal analyses (e.g. compositional complexity analysis); the resulting analysis output files are stored in an internal database. Integrating the analysis results, a Gestalt * is created for each sequence. Much biological insight can be obtained at a glance from these sequence pictorial representations, which prove to be a valuable aid in quick and intuitive sequence interpretation. In addition, sequences can be compared in pairwise fashion and visualised by content-annotated, bidirectional dotplots. An Introductory Question When I first conceived the plan of writing this book I guessed, though I did not know, how much effort it would cost to carry it out, and what demands it would put on a potential reader. And I doubted, not rhetorically but very honestly and sincerely, whether such labour on the part of the author and the reader was justified. I was not so much troubled by the idea of writing another book on psychology in addition to the many books which have appeared during the last ten years, as by the idea of writing a book on psychology. Writing a book for publication is a social act. Is one justified in demanding co-operation of society for such an enterprise? What good can society, or a small fraction of it, at best derive from it? I tried to give an answer to this question, and when now, after having completed the book, I return to this first chapter, I find that the answer which then gave me sufficient courage to start on my long journey, has stayed with me to the end. I believed I had found a reason why a book on psychology might do some good. Psychology has split up into so many branches and schools, either ignoring or fighting each other, that even an outsider may have the impression - surely strengthened by the publications. "Psychologies of 1925" and "Psychologies of 1930" - that the plural "psychologies" should be substituted for the singular.

Während in den Naturwissenschaften das Hauptinteresse dem Erkennen von kleinsten Teilen gilt, ist gestalthaftes Denken an der Bezogenheit der Teile zueinander interessiert. Diese Auffassungsweise führt weg vom Quantitativen, hin zum Qualitativen. Deutlich wird dies z.B. an einer Symphonie: Sie ist mehr und etwas anderes als die bloße Summe ihrer Töne. Gestalttherapie Auf solche "Gestaltqualitäten" wies 1890 erstmals der österreichische Philosoph Christian von Ehrenfels hin.Er löste damit eine geistige Revolution aus, die die Einseitigkeit und Ergänzungsbedürftigkeit des herkömmlichen Begriffs von Wissenschaftlichkeit deutlich werden ließ. In seiner Nachfolge haben besonders die Gestalttheoretiker Wertheimer, Köhler, Kaffka, Lewin in unzähligen empirischen Versuchen die Gültigkeit des Gestaltansatzes nachgewiesen und vor allem auf die Psychologie und Pädagogik angewandt.
