The main plot of The Red and the Black is deceptively simple. After the fall of Napoleon a young man, Julien Sorel, becomes the tutor of Mayor Renal's children and enters into a passionate love affair with their mother, his senior by many years. Eventually their affair is exposed and Julien leaves for a seminary, where he befriends the Abbe Pirard. This estimable man loses his job because he has supported the marquis de la Mole against the local bishop, but he is then well placed in Paris by the marquis, who also hires Julien as his secretary. Before Julien leaves for the capital, he resumes his affair with Mme. de Renal, whose newfound and guilt-laden devoutness is not sufficient proof against him or herself.

Existentialism: An Introduction
Key Elements Ludwig Biswanger Rollo May ... Conclusions

Existentialism: An Introduction
Existentialism is a philosophical perspective which was also expressed in art, literature and other forms of socio-psychological comment. Existentialism was at its height during the 1930'-1950's in Europe. Key figures included Jean Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, also Friedrich Nietzche and Soren Kierkegaard who were earlier philosophers. Existentialism understands the human to be challenged by the reality of temporary existence, and the view that life has no inherent meaning; meaning had to be constructed. Authentic human beings were those who could face existential futility and yet still go on to construct a meaningful life. The existential perspective could be understood thus: All existence ends in death Therefore, what is the point?

Next Existential Psychology Introduction: Both the humanistic and the existential psychologists focused on your freedom to choose your path in life. However, whereas the humanists believed that “being that self that you truly are” (as Carl Rogers put it) was a happy experience, the existentialists believed an authentic existence also yielded anguish, forlornness, and despair. Consequently, many people choose inauthenticity—simply thinking and doing what others think and do. In this lesson we will learn that for existentialists, the courageous choice is to act in responsible, self-directed ways even while remaining aware of your powerlessness and mortality. While the book cites some interesting research studies that relate to the concerns of the humanistic and existential psychologists, it must be admitted that many of the important ideas in this chapter—having a self-actualizing life, having rich phenomenological experiences, having free will—are not amenable to empirical assessment and validation. In fact, many psychologists of a phenomenological orientation would proudly agree with this, insisting that whereas objects can be studied through traditional “objective” research methods, human subjects cannot.

EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOLOGY AND THERAPY: AN OUTLINE OF HUMAN BEING DILEMMAS
RIMANTAS KOÈIÛNAS The present article describes the main principles of existential psychology and its application to counseling and psychotherapy. The key philosophical reference points of existential psychology and therapy are formulated here. When we speak about the novelty of existential psychology we should mention first of all the idea of the total, indissoluble interrelationship of the individual and his/her world. Each individual and his/her world are said to coconstitute one another. Existential psychology posits after L. Binswanger three different planes of the world that characterize our life as Being-in-the-world: (1) Umwelt - the surrounding world; (2) Mitwelt - the world of other people and relations with them; (3) Eigenwelt - our own world and our relations to ourselves. Another important principle of existential psychology is understanding the individual and his/her life in view of his/her intrinsic ontological characteristics. The main characteristics are finiteness of life (death), anxiety, and guilt.

Humanistic-Existential Psychology; Dasein Analysis
As a student in the 60s, I got acquainted with the psychology of Rogers and Gendlin, but at that time we Japanese psychologists did not know the expression of humanistic psychology. Existential psychology in German speaking area, called Dasein analysis, phenomenological anthropology, was already to some degree introduced in Japan through translations of books by Ludwig Binswanger and Medard Boss. Dasein is Hiedegger's ontological designation of humans whose unique way of being is the primary concern with Being. During the study abroad at Zurich University from 1978 till 1980, I was trained at The Dasein-analytic Institute of the Medard Boss Foundation. Returning to Japan, I joined the Japanese Association of Humanistic Psychology, and worked as the editor-in-chief of its magazine, The Japanese Journal for Humanistic Psychology from 1996 till 1998. I am now an executive member of JAHP, mainly responsible for international exchange and communication with humanistic psychology in other countries. I am impressed by on-going transformation of humanistic psychology in these decades, including the reception of existential orientation originating in German and French speaking countries. I am interested in locating humanistic psychology in the long history of Western intellectual history.

Course Description:
This course explores existential philosophy's principal concepts, texts and thinkers, with an emphasis on their significance for psychological theory and praxis. Course Objectives: (1) This course seeks to impart a firm understanding of existentialism's central concepts, texts and thinkers. (2) This course seeks to explore the significance of existentialism for psychology both theoretically and practically. (3) This course seeks to call the student into a deeper, more powerful appropriation of his or her own existence. Course Requirements: There will be three non-cumulative tests during the semester, each worth one third of the final grade. The dates of these tests will be announced beforehand in class. The tests will consist of a combination of short definition, short answer and essay. While there is no attendance requirement as such for this course, it is imperative that you keep abreast of what's going on. Some reasons for this are: (1) test dates are announced in class, (2) much of the material on the tests will come directly from the class notes and discussions, and (3) half of life is just showing up.

Individual, Existential, and Humanistic Psychology Dr. C. George Boeree Although we usually consider Freud the founder of personality psychology, there would be many others to come. First, there would be those who basically followed in his footsteps, like his daugher Anna Freud and her student Erik Erikson, and others who would develop theories not unlike Freud's, such as Carl Jung. Second, there were the Behaviorists like Pavlov and Skinner, who took the point of view that personality was nothing more than the sum total of all our habits. And third, there were many psychologists who fit in neither the Freudian nor the Behaviorist camps, but developed theories that emphasized things like consciousness, free will, social concern, and creativity. In this chapter, we will look at three of those psychologists and their theories: Alfred Adler's Individual Psychology, Existential Psychology as represented by Ludwig Binswanger, and Humanistic Psychology, as represented by Carl Rogers. Alfred Adler Freud had a hard time getting along with his more independent minded colleagues, several of whom left his circle. Over time, these colleagues developed their own theories and therapies, had their own circles and students, and went on to contribute to the field. One of the most influential was Alfred Adler.

ROLLO MAY Dr. C. George Boeree Biography After a brief stint at Michigan State (he was asked to leave because of his involvement with a radical student magazine), he attended Oberlin College in Ohio, where he received his bachelors degree. After graduation, he went to Greece, where he taught English at Anatolia College for three years. During this period, he also spent time as an itinerant artist and even studied briefly with Alfred Adler. When he returned to the US, he entered Union Theological Seminary and became friends with one of his teachers, Paul Tillich, the existentialist theologian, who would have a profound effect on his thinking. May received his BD in 1938. He went on to study psychoanalysis at White Institute, where he met people such as Harry Stack Sullivan and Erich Fromm. And finally, he went to Columbia University in New York, where in 1949 he received the first PhD in clinical psychology that institution ever awarded. After receiving his PhD, he went on to teach at a variety of top schools. In 1958, he edited, with Ernest Angel and Henri Ellenberger, the book Existence, which introduced existential psychology to the US. He spent the last years of his life in Tiburon, California, until he died in October of 1994. Theory Destiny , for example, is roughly the same as thrownness combined with fallenness. It is that part of our lives that is determined for us, our raw materials, if you like, for the project of creating our lives. Another example is the word

This article will look at police in terms of existential psychology. For the purpose of this paper I will be utilizing the theory of Dr. Irvin Yalom and his text EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPY (BasicBooks, 1980). The basic foundations of existential psychology are; Death Awareness, Free Will, Isolation, and Meaningless. While this paper is a relatively new concept in looking at police officers psychologically, the concept and theory of existential being has its origin in philosophy based reasoning. Undoubtedly, there will be those professionals who will disagree with the linking of the police officer and existential strains unique to the profession. However, as policing moves forward, police officers and police psychologists should consider this an additional area of academic research. This paper will be broken down into a few different parts. As I have stated earlier, due to the HTML format there is an inability to format this into APA style. Yalom also points out our relationship with responsibility, it is in this responsibility that we understand our loneliness. He writes, "To the extent that one is responsible for one's life, one is alone" (p. 357). For police officers, I find it hard to imagine that any cop has not come face-to-face with being alone. The job of being a police officer is a lonely job. It is in this acceptance and realization of being alone which makes police officers anxious. After all, police officers are by the very nature of police work able to control everything in their environment. By not being able to control death and isolation, that means they are vulnerable and helpless. Erich Fromm (as cited in Yalom, 1980) states, "The awareness of his aloneness and separateness, of is helplessness before the forces of nature and society, all this makes his separate disunited existence an unbearable prison" (p. 358).
