Paul Ehrlich challenges evolutionary psychology and the 'selfish gene' in his new book, Human Natures
Do "selfish genes" program men to be more promiscuous than women? Beneath the veneer of civility, are people innately aggressive? Some researchers and a growing segment of the general population - would answer "yes" to those and a host of other questions, suggesting that we are tightly programmed by our genes. But according to Stanford evolutionist Paul R. Ehrlich, there is little scientific basis for such widely accepted notions. Ehrlich challenges the so-called "selfish gene" and other tenets of evolutionary psychology in his wide-ranging new book , Human Natures: Genes, Cultures and the Human Prospect (Shearwater Books/Island Press, Washington, D.C.).

Order pdf ABSTRACT How can the evolution of religiosity be explained? To answer this question, we attempt to develop an understanding of the psychological domains underlying religious behaviour. We see four evolved domains, the sum and interaction of which constitute religiosity, namely: mysticism, ethics, myths and rituals. Even if the individual content, accents and implementations differ in each specific religion, they nevertheless derive from evolved Darwinian algorithms that are species-specific adaptations of homo sapiens.

Main April 27, 2004 Evolutionary psychology at work A few months ago I put in a plug for Scott Atran's new book In Gods We Trust [1], but I didn't realize that he has tried to get some of his ideas applied . Here is an abstract of an op-ed that he wrote after the Madrid bombings where he argues that we are not facing an ideological superstructure, but a de-centralized movement that taps into normal psychological needs . The idea that Al Qaeda isn't centralized isn't new, but Atran has a background in suicide bomber psychology research , and he argues that the phenomena isn't manifestation of socio or psycho pathology, but rather, it is drawing upon banal but evolutionarily derived needs (for instance, community). These conclusions are unoriginal, but they now stand on many pillars (that is, from sociology, anthropology, historiography, etc.). [1] For other perspectives on religion, I suggest A Theory of Religion (dry, rational choice) and Darwin's Cathedra l (tenditious group selectionism + functionalism, but interesting). Essay Review by Robert Kurzban: http://human-nature.com/nibbs/02/apd.html IQ LINKED TO LONG LIFE Sensitivity to rewards may distinguish extraverts from introverts: The article in the September issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, published by the American Psychological Association (APA), involved four studies which tested how extraversion and reward sensitivity are linked. Results show that although sociability (individual differences in the enjoyment of social activities and the preference for being with others over being alone) is an important part of extraversion, it may actually be a by-product of reward sensitivity, rather than a core feature of extraversion Mother knows best research reported in the August issue of The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine1 indicates that if mothers clearly state their disapproval of sexual activity, in a warm and loving environment, adolescents are more likely to delay their first experience of sexual intercourse.

Physical Beauty Involves More than Good Looks Studies have concentrated on the perception of physical beauty. Three recent studies by university researchers suggest that perception of physical attractiveness can be affected by our knowledge of a person's qualities. Melanie Klein: Beauty and Envy Linda Robbins: Many different reasons have been put forward as to why there is such an obsessive preoccupation with beauty in modern cultures. Most focus on social factors such as male domination of women or competition between women. This article outlines some possible individual unconscious factors. Melanie Klein was a psychoanalyst who thought that the obsessive preoccupation some women have with beauty has its origins in earliest infancy and a little girl's envious relationship to the beauty of her own mother.
