Not only all humans, but in fact all mammals are shown to have REM sleep, which is associated with dreams. It is a normal and necessary function of the body (though the details, especially the exact reason why it is important, are unknown). So if you think you don't dream you probably just don't remember. People vary greatly in how much they remember of their dreams. The perhaps most important reason why people forget their dreams is that they don't care. Western culture does not regard dreams as especially important, rather it regards getting out of the bed in time as a prevalent survival factor. This is bad in two respects as most dreams occur at the end of the sleeping cycle and are often interrupted, and the necessity of getting up fast and keeping up with the schedule occupies peoples' minds and prevents them from thinking about their dreams in the morning. Dream recall can be trained. Try to think over all what you have dreamed for some time before getting up and write it down soon afterwards.

He distinguished the manifest content of dreams : the dream as it is recalled by the individual : from the latent content or the meaning of the dream, which Freud saw in terms of wish fulfillment. C. G. Jung held that dreams function to reveal the unconscious mind, anticipate future events, and give expression to neglected areas of the dreamer's personality. Another theory, which PET scan studies appear to support, suggests that dreams are a result of electrical energy that stimulates memories located in various regions of the brain. See J. A. Hobson, The Dreaming Brain (1988); M.-L. von Franz

DREAM WORK The great thing about working with dreams is that we can do it at many different levels and in many different ways. Hence almost any approach to therapy or counselling can gain from working with dreams. There are four main ways of working with dreams. One is to treat them as information about the past. They can be looked at for clues about internal conflicts stemming from childhood traumas or decisions. They can give a great deal of news about the unconscious mind and what is going on there. And obviously this will be helpful in analysing one's life and one's problems. The second way is to treat them as information about the present. We can see a dream, as Perls used to say, as an existential message from you to you. One way of using this approach is to take up the role of each person and each thing in the dream, to find out what it is trying to say. This, too, can be productive and useful. A third way is to treat them as information about the future. Not simply as precognition - though this can certainly happen - but more as information about where you need to go next. This kind of prospective approach, pioneered by Jung, is very popular in the transpersonal approaches. And the fourth way is not to interpret the dream at all, but to let it be a guide to the inner world. This is the approach of James Hillman, a modern Jungian, who says that the dream world is a world of its own, needing to be understood on its own terms, and not needing to be tanslated. It is also the approach of Alvin Mahrer, in a different way.

    96. Interpreting Your Dreams
Erich Fromm. dreams Tools for Healing. If a dream is a psychic happening, what is the psyche? Deciphering dreams. dreams are tools of the personal psyche.
    http://www.bway.net/~monique/dreams.htm
Reflection , By Mariu Suarez , 58"x58", Oil and egg-tempera on canvas
    - Erich Fromm Dreams: Tools for Healing If a dream is a psychic happening, what is the psyche? Psyche is the word the Greeks used to name the three levels of personal consciousness. It is the equivalent of Anima in Latin, Soul in English and Alma in Spanish. Our personal psyche is the result of eons of evolution, from the single cell to our species as it is right now. It has three components: The Intellectual Nature; the Feeling Nature; and Energy. Whatever we think, makes molds, which compress the Energy into a pattern. The same happens with our emotions. This is why it is vital to understand all the levels in our psyche to become aware of the patterns that drive us. The only way to accomplish that is by listening to the messages it sends us through our dreams.
How the Psyche Communicates During the day, the attention of consciousness is focused on the objective side of life: The material world, including our material body and the activity of our exterior life. At night the focus of consciousness shifts to the subjective level while our body rests. The young science of psychology has given us a new scientific understanding of the meaning of myths, metaphors and symbols. We are doing with the inner world of the psyche what the revolutionary thinkers and philosophers of the XVII and XVIII Century did with the knowledge of the outside world: Divesting it from centuries of misinterpretation and superstition.
