Introduction to Dreams
Dreams. They have been a part of the human psyche since before recorded time. They have been said to have different purposes at different times throughout the ages. Some divined messages from omnipotent beings in dreams, others later saw them as a window to the unconscious. Some dismiss them as nothing more than a biochemical reaction occurring as the brain rests, recovers, and resets itself from day to day. What do you think they mean? Should psychologists study dreams to see if they tell us something about human behavior? Do you take the behaviorists standpoint that since we can not directly study the contents of dreams, then they are not something that the SCIENCE of psychology should be concerned with. (Note: the behaviorists, therefore, are not mentioned anywhere else in this workbook.) In this "metatheoretical approach", you will begin to answer some of these questions, and develop your beliefs. What should you take from this exercise then? Well, you will note some "themes" in psychology that we have discussed before in class. First, psychology is theoretically diverse. We will see that as you learn about the different orientations (approaches) in dealing with dreams. Second, you will see psychology evolved (and still evolves) in a sociohistoric context. It is with this second theme that we take a look at how dreams have been used in human history. Finally the "types" of dreams according to "pop" culture will be considered, before we begin to look at the major theoreticians in the field of psychology, mainly, Freud and his followers.

CHAPTER 2
THE METHOD OF DREAM INTERPRETATION
The Analysis of a Specimen Dream
The unscientific world, therefore, has always endeavoured to interpret dreams, and by applying one or the other of two essentially different methods. The first of these methods envisages the dream-content as a whole, and seeks to replace it by another content, which is intelligible and in certain respects analogous. This is symbolic dream-interpretation; and of course it goes to pieces at the very outset in the case of those dreams which are not only unintelligible but confused. The construction which the biblical Joseph placed upon the dream of Pharaoh furnishes an example of this method. The seven fat kine, after which came seven lean ones that devoured the former, were a symbolic substitute for seven years of famine in the land of Egypt, which according to the prediction were to consume all the surplus that seven fruitful years had produced. Most of the artificial dreams contrived by the poets[ ] are intended for some such symbolic interpretation, for they reproduce the thought conceived by the poet in a guise not unlike the disguise which we are wont to find in our dreams.

Dreams
Dreams defy the laws of physics, the principles of logic, and personal morality, and may reflect fears, frustrations, and personal desires. Often occurring in story-form with the dreamer as participant or observer, dreams usually involve several characters, motion, and may include sensations of taste, smell, hearing, or pain. The content of dreams clearly reflects daytime activities, even though these may be distorted to various degrees. While some people report dreaming only in black and white, others dream in color. "Lucid dreaming," in which the sleeper is actually aware of dreaming while the dream is taking place, is not uncommon. Research has indicated that everyone dreams during every night of normal sleep. Many people do not remember their dreams, however, and most people recall only the last dream prior to awakening. The memory shut-down theory suggests that memory may be one of the brain's functions which rests during dreaming, hence we forget our dreams. In order to understand how dreaming occurs, brain waves during sleep have been measured by an electroencephalograph (EEG). Normally large and slow during sleep, these waves become smaller and faster during periods of sleep accompanied by rapid eye movements (called REM sleep), and it is during these period when dreams occur. During a normal eight-hour period of sleep, an average adult will dream three to five dreams lasting ten to thirty minutes each for a total of 100 minutes.

Psychology Today
Sept, 2000 by Milton Kramer
Dreams are a theater of the emotions, where we play out the day's dramas that were left "be continued." We all go to bed with the problems of the day still on our minds. Unfortunately, a day is not like a play, which gets resolved by the time the final curtain falls. But dreams, with their colorful characters and settings, can play out that final scene while we sleep, processing the emotions we encounter in our waking lives. Forty years of research on dreams suggests that they are not just the random firings of our brains. Neither are they highly symbolic visions that should chart the course of our lives. But dreams do, in fact, have meaning. And our research shows that the nature of that meaning helps determine our mood the next day. That, in turn, determines how we function and what we can accomplish. Quite simply, the dreams we have at night set the stage for our actions the following day, priming us to either rise and shine and conquer the world, or crawl back under the covers and duck the challenges that lie ahead.

Part 2 Understand Dreams Part 3
How to understand what your dreams mean
The symbolism in dreams is often simply 'borrowed' from recent events. The first time the above dream occurred was after the woman had been watching a television programme about sailing. The symbols are rather arbitrary; it is the feelings in the dream which hold the key to unlocking dreams and what they mean. The feelings in the dream are usually an exaggeration of feelings from the real-life issue which caused the dream. If you feel terror in the dream think of when recently, in your waking life, you felt a little frightened. Or if you laugh hysterically during a dream look for a recent time when you found something funny but were maybe constrained from laughing too uproariously. When you find the dream's match it often feels like a 'clicking into place' - like a perception rather than an intellectualisation.
