Myron M. Arons
I have felt for some time that the intense interest shown by American psychology during the 1950’s and ‘60’s in the subject of “creativity” was one of the more meaningful events in the history of that psychology. It was a moment when psychology was, so to speak, turning the corner. And it is no coincidence that the interest in this area generally paralleled the social outbreaks which have been leading rather rapidly towards a new consciousness in America. Creativity, in a way, belongs to both past and emerging psychologies. It links the two. For the old psychologies in America - behaviorism and psychoanalysis - and, above all, for the methodology which became identified with psychology, creativity was a problem which had to be broached. But it also had to lead these psychologies to an impasse. The emerging psychologies, more humanistic, can readily begin with creativity but are obliged to transform the concept in the process of their development. Hence, as Frank Barron – one of the noted researchers in the area of creativity – put it, that which is essentially creative is likely to remain a mystery. It seems a just irony that the greatest service that creativity can render is an heuristic one. It helps us to understand things other than itself. More importantly, it serves the function it has always served, that of obliging us to open ourselves up and alter our frames of reference.

Abstract
The Psychology of Creativity; what is known and what is yet unanswered ...Psychological disorders have long been seen as an affecting factor in the use and development of creativity. Much research has been done and numerous tests administered, but since there are no tried and true methods of testing creativity, the exact correlations may be unclear. Throughout history there are many examples of the role psychological disorders have played in the creative process including Vincent Van Gogh and Sir Isaac Newton. Many have resorted to measures to try and "cure" their psychological disorder, which may have been a factor that enhanced their creativity....

    Defining creativity
" Create (verb) To bring into being, cause to exist; esp. to produce where nothing was before, ‘to form out of nothing’ " Oxford English Dictionary
Creativity is a complex cognitive ability, which everyone has to some extent. Definitions of creativity are very diverse. They mention problem solving, using the representational system, metacognition, intelligence, etc. Creativity is also related to personality, motivation, environmental conditions, culture, birth order, etc.
    Definitions of creativity
Before you attempt to make a scientific measurement of anything, you have to decide what it is you want to measure. To compare your results with other people's research, you need to have public agreement on a definition of the research topic. (Otherwise what you are doing is more like literary criticism than science.) But tightly defining creativity is very awkward; the everyday usage of the word covers many different things. So everyone thinks they know what is meant by creativity, but they don't all mean the same thing! This confusion over the definition explains many of the theoretical conflicts over creativity. The investment theory of creativity
"It is the tension between creativity and skepticism that has produced the stunning and unexpected findings of science." Carl Sagan:
    Converging factors
[Sternberg and Lubart 1991, 1993, 1995] propose that, for creativity to occur, multiple environmental factors must converge:
  • A suitable environmental context. Appropriate knowledge. Intrinsic motivation. Relevant personality variables. Appropriate intellectual processes. Appropriate intellectual style.
  • Only the last two are primarily cognitive. So creativity is seen as being dependent on the right combination of circumstances arising; a motivated, knowledgable and capable individual with access to the tools needed. You can picture this perhaps as the traditional castaway on a desert island faced with constructing some means of escape. The castaway needs to have:
  • materials to build with. some experience of making things. the urge to return to civilisation.

This book is about what makes life worth living. The creative excitement of the artist at her easel or the scientist in the lab. It comes as close to the ideal fulfillment as we all hope to accomplish, and so rarely do. Professor Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi interviewed more than ninety of possibly the most interesting people in the world people like actor Ed Asner, authors Robertson Davies and Nadine Gordimer, scientists Jonas Salk and Linus Pauling, and Senator Eugene McCarthy who have changed the way people in their fields think and work to find out how creativity has been a force in their lives. In his bestselling book Flow , Professor Csikszentmihalyi explored states of "optimal experience" those times when people report feelings of concentration and deep enjoyment and showed that what makes experience genuinely satisfying is a state of consciousness called "flow." Here Professor Csikszentmihalyi builds on his flow theory, profiling individuals who have found ways to make flow a permanent feature of their lives and at the same time have contributed to society and culture. Professor Csikszentmihalyi explores why creative people are often seen as selfish and arrogant (even though they are not) and reveals that the idea of the tortured genius is largely a myth. He argues that creativity needs to be cultivated not only in traditionally creative fields like sciences and arts, but also in business, government and education.

Research area: Developmental Psychology David Harrington studies human creativity and personality development in social context. His current theoretical work involves using an ecological perspective to integrate what is known about creative people, creative processes, and creative social contexts. This perspective emphasizes the socially and culturally embedded nature of creative processes and creative people as well as the intra-psychic roots of creative impulses and activities. His ecological perspective attempts to connect the intra-psychic, interpersonal, and social properties of creativity in theoretically useful ways. One of Harrington's current projects involves a longitudinal study of young artists, dancers, film and video makers, musicians, theater artists, and writers who are studied initially when they are high school students and whose personal and creative lives are then followed over time. In addition to identifying ways that creative activities influence personal and social development in adolescence and young adulthood, this research studies how creative activities, motivations, skills, and self-images are shaped over time by personality factors, gender, ethnicity, family backgrounds, influential teachers, and economic circumstances. Harrington hopes to expand this research to include adolescents and young adults who are creatively active in other domains.
