Biological basis for creativity linked to mental illness
Creative people more open to stimuli from environment by Jessica Whiteside Sept. 30, 2003 Psychologists from U of T and Harvard University have identified one of the biological bases of creativity The study in the September issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology says the brains of creative people appear to be more open to incoming stimuli from the surrounding environment. Other people's brains might shut out this same information through a process called "latent inhibition" - defined as an animal's unconscious capacity to ignore stimuli that experience has shown are irrelevant to its needs. Through psychological testing, the researchers showed that creative individuals are much more likely to have low levels of latent inhibition. "This means that creative individuals remain in contact with the extra information constantly streaming in from the environment," says co-author and U of T psychology professor

    Introduction
Am I dead or alive? Awake or asleep? Is this happening now or in the past? Am I a reincarnation from an earlier time or is it a reincarnation of me? Questions like these preoccupied me as a child. They especially haunted me as a teenager when just about everything about the world stopped making any real sense. Why can’t the world just stay still for a moment? Why can’t my experiences be simple and clear? I tried to put these questions aside and simply do my life. Wasn’t that what everyone else did? People went to work. They drove their cars or took busses. They went to school or to their job, went home, ate, went to sleep, and got up again. So, what was wrong with me? Why all of the extra stuff in my head? Why couldn’t I be an ordinary kid growing up without all these unruly thoughts?
The Many Worlds of Quantum Physics You can imagine the relief I felt many years later when Arny began to discuss and teach about the concept of parallel worlds in quantum physics. Now, quantum physics is about as far from my early artsy education in dance and theater as possible and I must admit it scared the hell out of me. But, Arny explained it in easy to understand terms that relate to our psychologies and experiences. (See Arnold Mindell’s

HOARD MAGAZINE THE PSYCHOLOGY OF CREATIVITY: REDEEMING OUR INNER DEMONS
An Interview With Stephen A. Diamond, Ph.D. by Douglas Eby
A clinical and forensic psychologist, Dr. Stephen Diamond works with many talented individuals committed to becoming more creative. "Creativity," he states, " is one of humankind's healthiest inclinations, one of our greatest attributes." As he explains in his provocative book, "Anger, Madness, and the Daimonic: The Psychological Genesis of Violence, Evil, and Creativity," our impulse to be creative "can be understood to some degree as the subjective struggle to give form, structure and constructive expression to inner and outer chaos and conflict. "It can also be one of the most dynamic methods of meeting and redeeming one's devils and demons." Anger, he asserts, is one of the most troubling emotions for psychotherapy patients in general. Yet, there is, Diamond says, a "very strong correlation between anger, rage and creativity, one which most people are not aware of. Most of us tend to view anger or rage negatively, associating it almost exclusively with destructiveness and violence. Certainly this correlation exists. But anger can also motivate constructive and creative behavior." In his brief foreword to Diamond's book, psychologist Rollo May introduces and defines the classic Greek conception of the "daimonic" or darker side of our being, noting that "the daimonic (unlike the demonic, which is merely destructive) is as much concerned with creativity as with negative reactions. A special characteristic of the daimonic model is that it considers both creativity on one side, and anger and rage on the other side, as coming from the same source. That is, constructiveness and destructiveness have the same source in human personality. The source is simply human potential."

    Course Summary
This course is an introduction to the psychological study of creativity in the arts and sciences. Our topics include the creative individual, the audience, the creative product, the creative process, and social, cultural, and institutional influences on the creative process. We will explore these issues by considering a range of creative fields, including painting, literature, music, theater, and science. To ground our study of the psychology of creativity, we will start by exploring what “art” is, which members of a society are labeled “artists,” and how these categories are socially and culturally defined. Our exploration of the psychology of creativity will incorporate relevant sociological and anthropological writings, with several examples of art forms from non-European cultures. In non-European cultures, we find that many creative individuals are engaged in various genres of performance, both in rituals and in everyday contexts, involving dance, song, or music. The course will consider music, theater, play, and ritual as well as European “high art” like painting, literature, and music composition.

    Psychology of Creativity
Interview #2Contextual influences on the creative individual
    Length: 4-6 pages double spaced.
Like the first interview, this one should be between 30 and 60 minutes long. This must be with a different individual than the first interview. In this interview and in your written report, I'd like you to focus on contextual factors that influence the creative individual. These could include social, cultural, or historical influences. You should quote liberally and verbatim from the interviewee's comments (from your audiotape or handwritten notes). In addition, at least half of the paper should consist of analysis and interpretation of the interviewee's comments; in these analyses, you should draw on course themes and readings. As with the first interview, I would prefer you to develop your own questions for your interview. But if you like, you may choose to use some of the following questions.
    Lifespan influences:
    • Did your early childhood, or your family, play a role in your current creativity or your creative development? Was there anyone who was especially influential to your choosing this area, or developing your ability in this areaa relative, a teacher, a mentor?

    HUMANISTIC PSYCHOLOGY OVERVIEW Throughout
history many individuals and groups have affirmed the inherent value and dignity of human beings. They have spoken out against ideologies, beliefs and practices which held people to be merely the means for accomplishing economic and political ends. They have reminded their contemporaries that the purpose of institutions is to serve and advance the freedom and power of their members. In Western civilization we honor the times and places, such as Classical Greece and Europe of the Renaissance, when such affirmations were expressed. Humanistic Psychology is a contemporary manifestation of that ongoing commitment. Its message is a response to the denigration of the human spirit that has so often been implied in the image of the person drawn by behavioral and social sciences. During the first half of the twentieth century, American psychology was dominated by two schools of thought: behaviorism and psychoanalysis. Neither fully acknowledged the possibility of studying values, intentions and meaning as elements in conscious existence. Although various European perspectives such as phenomenology had some limited influence, on the whole mainstream American psychology had been captured by the mechanistic beliefs of behaviorism and by the biological reductionism and determinism of classical psychoanalysis. The "Second Force" emerged out of Freudian psychoanalysis and the depth psychologies of Alfred Adler, Erik Erikson, Erich Fromm, Karen Horney, Carl Jung, Melanie Klein, Otto Rank, Harry Stack Sullivan and others. These theorists focused on the dynamic unconscious - the depths of the human psyche whose contents, they asserted, must be integrated with those of the conscious mind in order to produce a healthy human personality . The founders of the depth psychologies believed (with several variations) that human behavior is principally determined by what occurs in the unconscious mind. So, where the behaviorists ignored consciousness because they felt that its essential privacy and subjectivity rendered it inaccessible to scientific study, the depth psychologists tended to regard it as the relatively superficial expression of unconscious drives.
