106. Educational Psychology Interactive: The Cognitive System
The cognitive System. Last Modified June 1, 1997 or ideas" (Webster's Dictionary). Cognition is central to the development of psychology as a scientific discipline
http://chiron.valdosta.edu/whuitt/col/cogsys/cogsys.html
The Cognitive System Last Modified: May 2004 Courses Home Page Cognition can be defined as "the act or process of knowing in the broadest sense; specifically, an intellectual process by which knowledge is gained from perception or ideas" (Webster's Dictionary). Cognition is central to the development of psychology as a scientific discipline. The establishment of Wilhelm Wundt's laboratory in 1879 to study human thought processes is often used as the beginning of modern psychology. C ognitive psychology is one of the major approaches within psychology and can be contrasted with the behavioral view (a focus on observable behavior), a psychoanalytic view (a focus on the unconscious), a humanistic view (a focus on personal growth and interpersonal relationships) and a social cognitive view (a focus on the social environment as it impacts personal qualities such as thinking and feeling.) An important distinction between the behavioral and cognitive or humanistic views is the importance of feedback . For behaviorists, the most important feedback comes in the form of the application of consequences from the environment. The cognitive, as well humanistic, would focus on the importance of internal feedback. The social cognitive view considers both types.

General Philosophy (Wittgenstein, Dretske, Nagarjuna, Heidegger, and others.) Films and Popular Culture (Film reviews, principles of criticism, and other resources.) One of the principal claims of this site is that mental images exist on a continuum of modalities: from instances that may be described as clearly due to physical causes to those that seem to have only mental causes. The diagram below suggests this continuum, indicating several types of images. The properties of mental images change according to their type. The more we move in the direction of mental causation, the more involved images seem to be with language, and the less important their visual properties become. For example, the deduction (depicted below) "B is taller than A is taller than C, so B is taller than C"

Imitation, one of the primary forms of social learning, is often thought of as a low-level, relatively childish or even mindless phenomenon. This may be a serious mistake. It is beginning to look, in light of recent work in the cognitive sciences, as if imitation is a rare, perhaps even uniquely human ability, which may be fundamental to what is distinctive about human learning, intelligence, rationality, and culture. If so, this will have important consequences for our understanding of ourselves both individually and socially. In particular, social learning by imitation is not merely a mechanism by means of which children acquire culture, but may also have pervasive influence throughout adulthood, in ways that we are only just beginning to understand. The purpose of the conference is to bring together the world's leading figures working on imitation from various disciplines in order to relate and integrate different research traditions. The cognitive sciences have made significant recent advances in the study of imitation. We aim to make these accessible to the social sciences, so as to clarify their philosophical and social importance, and facilitate cross-fertilization between the cognitive and social sciences in this area. Cognitive Behavior Therapy as a Treatment for Body Image Dissatisfaction
    Catherine Faucher
Cognitive Behavior Therapy for body image has been proven an effective way to improve body dissatisfaction. It has been applied to persons with eating disorders, obesity, body dysmorphic disorder, and normal weight, all of whom harbor negative feelings toward their bodies. It is critically important to target body image for specific treatment, as negative feelings about one's body are often a major precipitous to eating disorders.
    What is body image?
Body image can be defined as the picture one has in his mind about the appearance (i.e. size and shape) of his body, and the attitude that he forms toward these characteristics of his body. Thus there are two components of body image: the perceptual part, or how one sees his own body, and the attitudinal part, or how one feels about his perceived bodily appearance (Gardner, 1996). A negative body image can be in the form of mild feelings of unattractiveness to extreme obsession with physical appearance that impairs normal functioning (Rosen, 1995).
How do Americans feel about their bodies?
