Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • More than 1 out of 4 psychologists are self-employed, nearly four times the average for professional workers.
  • Most specialists, including clinical and counseling psychologists, need a doctoral degree; school and industrial-organizational psychologists need a master’s degree.
  • Opportunities in psychology are limited for those with only a bachelor’s degree.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Psychologists study the human mind and human behavior. Research psychologists investigate the physical, cognitive, emotional, or social aspects of human behavior. Psychologists in health service provider fields provide mental health care in hospitals, clinics, schools, or private settings. Psychologists employed in applied settings such as business, industry, government or non-profits provide training, conduct research, design systems, and act as advocates for psychology. Like other social scientists, psychologists formulate hypotheses and collect data to test their validity. Research methods vary depending on the topic under study. Psychologists sometimes gather information through controlled laboratory experiments or by administering personality, performance, aptitude, and intelligence tests. Other methods include observation, interviews, questionnaires, clinical studies, and surveys.

MASTER'S (M.A./M.S.) DEGREE JOB DESCRIPTION Overview
Master's-level clinical and counseling psychology practitioners ("C/CPPs" for purposes of this manual; in some states, clinicians with this degree cannot legally call themselves "psychologists") conduct assessment and therapy with people having psychological problems. They work in community mental health centers, psychiatric hospitals, non-profit organizations, and private practices, usually under the direction of doctoral level C/C psychologists. Typical Job Duties See this section under the "Clinical/Counseling Psychologist (Ph.D./Psy.D.)" career profile. Job Outlook Faster than average job growth is expected, for all the same reasons that jobs for doctoral level C/C psychologists are predicted to grow. However, C/CPPs face strong competition for jobs from other master's-level helping professionals (e.g., social workers, counselors, creative arts therapists). The uncertain licensing status of C/CPPs may hurt in the job market where financially strapped mental health centers cannot afford the time or money for supervision. C/CPPs were not among the top 30 fastest-growing occupations as ranked by the BLS, and they were not included in the MSU study. Potential Earnings

The Washington College Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a Clinical/Counseling Concentration
Faculty: Assistant Professor Lauren Littlefield and Professor Jim Siemen
The Clinical/Counseling program in Psychology is designed to prepare students interested in going into the helping professions and human services. Course work and related experiences should provide students with a foundation for graduate work, or, in some cases, entry level positions in counseling, school psychology, clinical psychology, child/adolescent assessment and intervention, occupational therapy, rehabilitation psychology, and other areas within the mental health field.
All students work closely with a clinical or counseling faculty member on a senior research project of interest to the student. By graduation, most students have worked on at least one additional project with a faculty member and played a role in presenting the findings at a regional psychology conference.
In its first year (1998-99), there were five psychology majors who graduated with clinical/counseling distinction. By the next academic year, 1999-00, that number had grown to eleven. We expect continued growth. In the short period of time the Clinical/Counseling psychology program has been in existence, it has helped students get accepted into a number of graduate programs including those in the following human service specializations: clinical psychology, counseling psychology, social work, developmental psychology, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. In addition, several students have also gone on to both clinical research positions and careers in child care or teaching.
