Counseling psychology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Counseling psychology is an application of the basic professional skills in psychology to a population that has been more located in schools rather than hospitals and clinics. Counseling psychology grew up in the area of guidance, the special relationships developed in schools and universities for answering student needs beyond instruction. Another early stream of influence was from vocational rehabilitation. The Veterans' Administration, in the United States , sponsored guidance counseling for World War I veterans who sought compensation for disabling injuries. Later, after World War II and the expanded GI benefits, the VA used counseling psychologists in both their regional offices and attached to VA medical centers, to work with veterans around vocational adjustment to disability, and educational issues in retraining for civilian work and career. University counseling centers were the locus of many early developments in counseling psychology. Gradually, programs in counseling psychology have become a co-equal basic training regimen for eligibility for licensing as a professional psychologist, along with programs in clinical psychology. Counseling psychologists and clinical psychologist are now found in all settings involving licensed practice of psychology as a health care profession. Views Personal tools Navigation Search Toolbox

With those goals in mind, the curriculum focuses on a broad spectrum of issues including:
  • the antecedent conditions that predispose people to psychological disorders, the nature and treatment of those disorders, crisis intervention strategies and the influence of various family and group dynamics, gender differences, cultural diversity, social problems and age on the emergence of various symptoms.
Students will be trained to conduct intake and assessment interviews, to develop counseling interventions, to function as an ethical and competent counselor. Students also will acquire a knowledge of research and assessment techniques and the pragmatic concerns (e.g., managed care and budget constraints) facing the mental health field today.

A fundamental mission of all our programs is to promote and value diversity. This is found in the many opportunities our students have to explore issues of human diversity (race, ethnicity, culture, gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability, etc.), to learn a variety of theoretical approaches to counseling, to study with a multicultural array of students and faculty, to work with a range of client populations, and to practice in multiple work settings. A common link across our master's and doctoral training programs is a commitment to excellence. Our graduate students work in countless agencies and schools throughout the local communities, contributing valuable new ideas and assistance to students, clients, and organizations.

Integral Counseling Psychology
M.A. in Counseling Psychology Program
Founded in 1973 on the recommendation of Dr. Haridas Chaudhuri, the Integral Counseling Psychology (ICP) program was the first transpersonally oriented, East-West psychology graduate program in the world. The program has evolved a vision of psychotherapy practice that draws upon the major spiritual traditions of the East and West, recent cultural and social sciences research, and the innovations made by contemporary psychoanalytic, humanistic, systemic, and transpersonal psychologies. The Integral Counseling Psychology program is unique in that it adheres to the guidelines of the major professional organizations in the field, while at the same time incorporating the integral philosophy of the late Haridas Chaudhuri. Integral means "essential to wholeness." According to this view, all aspects of a person's being are important and to be valued. Integral psychology holds that the individual can and should turn inward in the search for wisdom and effective energy, and then share this wisdom with the broader community to advance the evolutionary process. The curriculum integrates a spiritual perspective with actual psychotherapy practice. The transpersonal orientation provides an overarching framework for clinical work, supporting an increased emphasis on training in depth therapy.

NOTES FROM PANEL OF CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY, PSY. D. , COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIAL WORK GRADUATE STUDENTS On November 17th, a panel of nine graduate students from clinical psychology programs at Temple, Penn, Hahnemann; Schools of Social Work at Bryn Mawr and Penn; a Psy. D. program at Widener; and a Counseling Psychology program from the University of Nebraska, met with undergraduates. The panelists explained the differences between the various types of degrees available in the mental health field, and covered such topics as preparing for graduate school, the application process, acquiring internships, and the types of jobs that one can get upon completion of the programs.
For undergraduates interested clinical psychology you should be thinking in terms of a five to six year commitment to graduate study, i.e. four years for coursework and dissertation requirements and a one year internship.
