- Book Review, by Michael A. Sayette, Michael Sayette, John C. Norcross, Tracy J. Mayne, Tracy Mayne
Doody's Annual, 1994-95

This is an excellent resource for undergraduates, recent graduates, and master's level students contemplating applying to clinical psychology programs. The authors are faithful to the title; this is truly an "insider's guide."....I wish I had this resource book available to me when I was applying to graduate school!
Helen Rowan, M.A., clinician returning for her doctorate
I love your book! This book is excellent for focusing upon specific areas of interest as well as going about the process in a systematic, logical manner. GREAT JOB.

FAQs Who's Who? Grad School ... Journals With all the different types of counselors out there, I thought a section describing who's who would help out future students. Counselors Psychologists References Counselors The term counselor is meant to describe someone who holds their master's degree in counseling. Counselors can be found in a variety of settings including college counseling centers, private counselors, rehabilitation counselors, and counselors in private practice. Training is typically broad and counselors can find themselves doing career counseling, family counseling, school counseling, mental health counseling, community counseling, marriage counseling and consulting. Master's programs are accredited by CACREP (e.g. community, career, family, etc) and the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) accredits rehabilitation counseling programs. Most programs will offer a core of coursework, internship and/or practica placements, and many offer the opportunity for specialty work. There are quite a few licensing levels: NCC - National Certified Counselor
ACS - Approved Clinical Supervisor
LPC - Licensed Professional Counselor (some states may use a different name)
You should check with the state you wish to practice in to inquire about licensure requirements. The

I am a graduate student in a top-notch clinical psychology Ph.D. program. I used this book extensively and found it to be very helpful. It is a "must-buy." However, readers should be aware that it CANNOT substitute for individual advice tailored to your particular interests from someone who both knows about graduate school in psychology and knows you as well. Also be aware that the individual program information, while reasonably accurate, changes very quickly. Use the guide first to identify a fairly large group of programs you're interested in. Then request information from those programs. That having been said, the book is a tremendous resource and worth more than its weight in gold. Home

Animal-Assisted Therapy in Counseling and School Settings. ERIC/CASS Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC INTRODUCTION Recent research and experience has demonstrated that the use of dogs as "co-therapists" may be of assistance to counselors in counseling with withdrawn and non-communicative counselees. The use of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and animal-assisted activity (AAA) may be another useful tool which could be offered in counselor education programs and in school counseling programs.
ANIMAL-ASSISTED THERAPY
The integration of animal-assisted therapy into clinical psychology was first credited in 1962 to the child psychologist, Boris Levinson, with his paper published in Mental Hygiene, "The dog as a 'co therapist'." Levinson discovered he could make significant progress with a disturbed child when Levinson's dog, Jingles, attended therapy sessions. He went on to find that many children who were withdrawn and uncommunicative would interact positively with the dog (Levinson, 1969). Animal-assisted therapy has a long, but undocumented history, and it has only been in the last half of the twentieth century that research and professional response has been conducted on the use of animals in therapy.
