http://ww2.sjc.edu/department_pages/education/Child_Study_(CHST).html
Child Study/Education/Special Education Department June, 2000 Child Study (CHST) Interdisciplinary Major Criteria for Admission Procedure for Application Minor Option Comprehensive Exam Child Study Interdisciplinary Major Child study is an academic interdisciplinary major in child development, incorporating courses from the disciplines of psychology, philosophy, and sociology with a concentration in child study. Mission and Objectives Grounded in the values and beliefs of Saint Joseph College, the Child Study, Education, and Special Education Department endeavors to prepare teachers and child/youth professionals who are independent problem-solvers and competent practitioners as well as being reflective in practice and inquisitive in nature. It is the intent of each program to provide its graduates with various and extensive academic and field experiences. The goal of the department's programs is to help students develop a perspective of the crucial role that both theory and practice play in facilitating the teaching-learning process with diverse populations. Toward this end, the child study interdisciplinary major is unified by its focus on child development and by the following connecting threads: theories as human constructs; research; direct contact with children, including those with special needs; children and families; children, societies, and cultures; and children as creators. Two goals of this program are to deepen students' understanding of their own development and to develop sensitivities toward others. This program prepares students for working with children in a variety of contexts, including teaching.
