Members of disliked minority groups are often stereotyped as representing a danger to the majority society's most vulnerable members. Historically, Black men in the United States were often falsely accused of raping White women, and commonly lynched as a result. Jews in the Middle Ages were accused of murdering Christian babies in ritual sacrifices. In a similar fashion, gay people have often been portrayed as a threat to children. When Anita Bryant campaigned successfully in 1977 to repeal a Dade County (FL) ordinance prohibiting anti-gay discrimination, she named her organization "Save Our Children," and warned that "a particularly deviant-minded [gay] teacher could sexually molest children" (Bryant, 1977, p. 114). [ Bibliographic references are on a different web page In recent years, antigay activists have routinely asserted that gay people are child molesters. This argument has often been raised in debates about the Boy Scouts of America's policy to exclude gay scouts and scoutmasters. It has also been raised in connection with recent scandals about the Catholic church's attempts to cover up the abuse of young males by priests. Indeed, the Vatican's early response to the 2002 revelations of widespread Church cover-ups of sexual abuse by priests was to declare that gay men should not be ordained.

108. Q & A: Health And Spirituality: Ouija Board, Devil And Special Prayer...

Question
My daughter came to me the other night in tears. She said that, at an overnight party, she had fooled around with a Ouija board. She said that someone at church told her that she had allowed the devil into her life and would now have problems unless she undergoes some sort of special prayer. What is she talking about? What can I do to help her?
Answer
There are indeed some groups within various religions who belief that Ouija boards are evil and therefore subject people to various forms of prayer, some of which can be quite traumatic. You might instead consider the following: Ask your daughter what, if anything, she "asked" the Ouija board since "answers" can sometimes be disturbing and frightening.

Editors' Note
Editors' Notes : Baldwin's Mental Development is a central text in the development of social psychology in North America and recently has re-emerged as a primary source in artificial intelligence, being part of the set of Baldwin publications documenting what is now known as " the Baldwin effect. " Unfortunately, we have not been able to obtain a usable copy of the 1895 edition and have had to rely on a reprint of the third edition. Intervening years introduced some changes and references in the 1890s documents will not always be relevant to this version. In his introduction to the reprint, Vahan Sewny wrote: The book is often referenced as a predecessor to Mead's analysis of the development of the self. Following Royce, Baldwin had argued for a development process, a stepwise bootstrapping into selfhood, ideas similar to those later expounded by Mead. Also, Baldwin argues for the co-emergence of concepts of self and other, of ego and alter , ideas that would also be developed more fully by Cooley and Mead.

    Voicelessness and Emotional Survival
    Introduction
"If I asked you what children need in order to be psychologically healthy, you would probably answer: love and attention. Of course, you would be rightlove and attention are essential for every child. But, there is a third psychological need critical to the emotional well-being of children: "voice." What is "voice"? It is the sense of agency that makes a child confident that he or she will be heard, and that he or she will positively impact his or her environment. With this sense of agency comes the implicit belief that one's core has value. Exceptional parents grant a child a voice equal to theirs the day that child is born. And they respect that voice as much as they respect their own. How does a parent provide this gift? By following three "rules:"
  • Assume that what your child has to say about the world is just as important as what you have to say. Assume that you can learn as much from them as they can from you. Enter their world through play, activities, discussions: don't require them to enter yours in order to make contact." (From
