Brain cells that contain serotonin, like the ones highlighted here in green and yellow, may play an important role in sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS. Some researchers suspect that these cells, situated in the brain near large arteries, highlighted in red, are part of a system that normally monitors the blood for high levels of carbon dioxide, which can be harmful. Through a release of serotonin, the brain cells are thought to increase breathing and keep carbon dioxide levels low. This system, however, may not work properly in some babies and could help contribute to SIDS. Image reprinted with permission from Nature Neuroscience, S. Risso Bradley et al., Vol. 5, 401 (2002). Biological psychology may be looked at as a hybrid of neuroscience and psychology . Practioners of biological psychology may use their knowledge of the brain , from neurotransmitters to the cerebral cortex to treat their patients. Others may use this knowledge to search for biological causes for common mental illnesses, such as depression and schizophrenia Many psychologists focus largely on the mental processes of their patients. A biological psychologist realizes that there is an organic basis to all mental processes, that is there is no difference between the brain and the mind . They realize that treating the organic problem may be accomplished by talking as well as drugs. Eric Kandell is a great proponent of this theory.

    Library Instruction:
    PS304: Biological Psychology Goal:
To use printed and electronic sources to help construct a bio-psych experiment. These sources include:
    • MEDLINE , a database containing articles from scholarly medical journals. Some of these articles are available in full text, online. PsycINFO , a database of scholarly psychology journal articles and popular psychology magazine articles. Books on bio-psych tests and experiments, found in the library catalog
    Advice for MEDLINE:
MEDLINE is a government-funded database which helps you find articles in scholarly medical journals. Our subscription to MEDLINE also has the full text of some of these articles available online. Always use the controlled vocabulary, marked "MeSH" on your search screen. "MeSH" stands for " Me dical S ubject H eadings", and it is a controlled vocabulary of subject descriptors for medical topics. MeSH uses medical terms, not normal-English terms. For instance, "Cancer" is not a subject term; instead, "Neoplasms" (the more esoteric medical term for cancer) is used.
