161. Megillat Esther: "she'Asah Nissim La'Avoteinu"
analysis of the Book of Esther, with cultural explanations of the satire and some of the queen's oddseeming behavior.

MEGILLAT ESTHER
SHE'ASAH NISSIM LA'AVOTEINU
by Yitzchak Etshalom
I WHERE IS GOD IN THE MEGILLAH? Every year on Purim, Jews all over the world fulfill the Mitzvah of K'riat haMegillah - reading the complete book of Esther from a proper scroll. Before beginning, the reader/leader proclaims three B'rakhot - the middle of which is Birkat haNes (the blessing recited at the commemoration of a mirale): Barukh...she'Asah Nissim la'Avoteinu baYamim haHeim baZ'man haZeh (Who performed miracles for our ancestors in those days at this time [of year]). Considering that, unlike the Exodus (and all other Biblical miracles), God's hand is nowhere to be found in the text of the story of Esther and Mordechai, we have to wonder which miracle is the focus of this thanksgiving to God? For which Nes are we praising God? (Parenthetically, the same question could be asked in reference to Hannukah, where the most central "miracle" we celebrate is a military victory which did not, from the accounts we have, include any miraculous intervention in the conventional understanding of the word. To whatever extent this shiur answer the question vis-a-vis Purim, that answer should carry the same validity for the Hannukah question. Significantly, Purim and Hannukah are the two occasions when this B'rakhah is recited.) A second question, certainly related to the first, focusses on one of the unique features of the Megillah. As is well known, Esther is the only book in T'nakh with absolutely no mention of God (by any Name). Much as the Midrash interprets some occurences of "the king" in Esther (e.g. 6:1) as a reference to God, this is certainly not p'shat. Why is this story even included in the Biblical canon?

Society for Quantitative Analyses of Behavior
The Society for Quantitative Analyses of Behavior (SQAB) was founded in 1978 by J. A. Nevin and M. L. Commons to present symposia and publish material which bring a quantitative analysis to bear on the understanding of behavior. A brief history is available. This International Society holds its annual meeting in conjunction with the Association for Behavior Analysis ( ABA ). Talks at SQAB focus on the development and use of mathematical formulations to: characterize one or more dimensions of an obtained data set, derive predictions to be compared with data, and generate novel data analyses. Avigail's Riteous Conduct Within a Bad Relationship:
a Message for Today
We left Avigail, at the end of our previous class, preparing her appeal to David, in order to avert his imminent attack on her husband and their household. This class examines the details of Avigail's appeal, and follows the events that culminate in her marriage to David. In Avigail's interaction with the two diametrically opposing personalities of David and Naval we see the breadth and versatility of her truly righteous character. Avigail intercedes with David, as an advocate for both herself and her undeserving husband. She moves forward programmatically - with wisdom, confidence and depth - addressing a complex of issues each as separate entity and as part of an integrated, problematic whole. Avigail first responds to David's initial request for food. This demonstrates her desire to correct her husband's wrongdoing immediately, before she addresses the other aspects of his transgression. Avigail is disturbed by the fact that she was not present when David's men had asked Naval for provisions. The amount of food that Avigail presents to David upon their encounter is evidence of her enormous generosity and her commitment to replace wrongdoing with righteousness: "... Avigail hurried and took two hundred breads, two containers of wine, five cooked sheep, five se'ahs of toasted grain, a hundred raisin clusters, and two hundred cakes of pressed figs, and she put them on the donkeys..."

LIVING IN THE DEAD ZONE
Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison
Understanding the Borderline
Personality Disorder Gerald A. and Ralph M. Faris SUMMARY AUTHORS BIO ORDER READING ROOM ... Preface Summary This surprising new book by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Gerald Faris and his brother, Sociologist Dr. Ralph Faris, explains in detail, how Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison, the 'king and queen' of rock and roll in the 1960's, suffered from a little understood psychiatric disorder that eventually took their lives. The book is clinical in theme, lyrical in style and deeply sympathetic to the real suffering of Janis and Jim. It raises and answers the following questions:
  • Why did they behave so outrageously? Why were they so self-destructive? What did they have in common?
