This SIG is dedicated to the study of "language" from a behavior analytic point of view. Behavior Analysts attempt to study humans and nonhumans as objectively as possible, thus the focus on observable behaviors, as well as antecedents and consequences of those behaviors. The term "verbal behavior" was coined by Skinner (1957) - see that text for an in-depth analysis of language from a behavioral perspective. To investigate this web click on the links above. Animal Behaviour
An evolutionary approach to the analysis, assessment and treatment of behaviour problems in companion animals *Dr. Daniel Mills dmills@lincoln.ac.uk , Gill Sheppard * Author for all correspondence
The nature of behaviour and behaviour problems
Understanding the nature of behaviour problems is essential to developing a rational basis for their treatment. Behaviour problems arise as a result of an interaction between factors relating to the current environment and developmental factors within a patient of a given state. Not all behaviour problems represent dysfunctional, abnormal or maladaptive behaviour since "the problem is the not the animal’s behaviour per se but rather the problem that this behaviour poses for its owner" (Askew 1996). Broadly speaking behaviour problems may be divided into behaviours which are adaptive but inconvenient for the owner, those which are derived from attempts to behave in an adaptive way in a suboptimal environment and those which are truly maladaptive e.g. seizure activity. Ethological explanations which focus on the ultimate factors governing behaviour are widely used for the category of problems which consist of adaptive, species typical behaviours which are inconvenient for the owner, like urine spraying in cats and hierarchical aggression in dogs (Borchelt and Voith 1982). However the potential for an ultimate analysis of behaviour problems which have traditionally been thought of as psychopathologies, is a much more recent phenomenon. These problems tend to be analysed from a behavioural or medical perspective which concentrates on proximate explanations of behaviour (Mills 1997).

elcome to our site. I am Dr. Albert Levis, a psychiatrist and educator, also the innkeeper of the Wilburton Inn, in Manchester Village, VT, and the curator of the Museum of the Creative Process. Today I welcome you to the Inn, to the Institute of Conflict Analysis and to the Museum. Here I deliver a training program about my research findings on the scientific and moral nature of the creative process. Indeed I call creativity the conflict resolution process. I regard it as the unit of the mental and moral order. I claim that in this order are revealed the secrets that can integrate knowledge into wisdom. The beautiful Wilburton, a turn of the century magical castle on a hill overlooking the country side, is a twin project to the Lincoln family’s country home, Hildene, next door. Whereas Hildene reminds us of the civil war conflicts, the Wilburton may stand for conflict resolution. I am the expert, the resident Wizard, on matters of conflict resolution and I am offering a comprehensive educational program on the creative process as an orderly entity, the very link between art and science. To achieve conveying information on creativity as an orderly process I installed four permanent art exhibits on the grounds of the inn. These present information on the creative process as the integrative paradigm. A formidable sculptural trail retraces the history of paradigms, 100 canvases of an artist’s retrospective present the creative process as a formal structure with a conflict resolving function. The Sanctuary of Wisdom presents the creative process as the unit entity of all the social sciences, hence integrating them into the Moral Science. Finally the exhibit of the Wizard of Oz allows to show the application of the new concepts in increasing the meaningfulness of the symbolism of the popular story
