Evolutionary psychology has been dominated by one particular method for studying the mind and behavior. This is the first book to both question that monopoly and suggest a broad range of particular alternatives. Psychologists, philosophers, biologists, anthropologists, and others offer different methods for combining psychology and evolution. They recommend specific changes to evolutionary psychology using a wide variety of theoretical assumptions. In addition, some essays analyze the underpinnings of the dominant method, relate it to the context of evolutionary and psychological theory and to general philosophy of science, and discuss how to test approaches to evolutionary psychology. The aim of this collection is not to reject evolutionary psychology but to open up new vistas which students and researchers can use to ensure that evolutionary psychology continues to thrive. Guide To Natural Health These days, more and more health professionals recognize that good health depends largely on good behavior. Most hospitals now have behavioral medicine divisions, staffed by psychologists, psychiatrists and physicians to ensure patients get the best overall care. The American Psychological Association's health psychology division is also devoted to integrating biomedical information about health and illness with current psychological knowledge. This new professional mindset is propelled by the public's overwhelming fascination with alternative treatment approaches. Simply put, more people are turning to complementary and alternative medicine to cure what ails them. According to a survey published recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the number of Americans using alternative therapies rose from 60 million in 1990 to 83 million in 1997. Many of these therapies were used for centuries, but lost prevalence with the advent of modern medicine. So why are they now regaining favor? Not only are we dissatisfied with conventional medicine, say the results of another survey that appeared recently in JAMA, but alternative treatments mirror our beliefs, values and philosophical attitudes.

    96. SUGGESTIONS FOR COPING WITH MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS ON INTRODUCTORY PSYCHOLOGY
If you are ever unsure as to why the answer alternative you chose on a particular multiplechoice question was Department of psychology, University of Toronto.
    http://www.erin.utoronto.ca/~w3asc/MCPsychology1.html
SUGGESTIONS FOR COPING WITH MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS ON INTRODUCTORY PSYCHOLOGY TESTS AND EXAMS Multiple-choice questions consist of three parts:
  • a stem, which asks a question, poses a problem, or presents an incomplete sentence, the correct answer, which appears among a number of "distracters" or "seductive" alternatives.
  • Your task is to identify the correct answer alternative, that is, the best answer alternative from among the given answer alternatives. Multiple-choice questions can be unnerving for students unfamiliar with them. The following twelve suggestions should help you with them. To be of maximum benefit, it is recommended that you review them before each test.
  • Do not count on being able to answer multiple-choice questions correctly merely by recognizing the correct answer. Recognition usually entails choosing a familiar item. However, in a multiple-choice question, it is possible for every alternative to be familiar. The problem, then, is not familiarity, but rather understanding the meaning of each of the alternatives with respect to the context of the question posed. You can best achieve this level of understanding by studying for the test as though it will be a short-answer or essay test. Read each question stem twice. As you read, underline words such as "not" or "always" to help you remember what it is you are looking for.
Before reading the answer alternatives, attempt first your own answer to the question stem. Because the answer alternatives may sometimes begin to confuse you, it is best to reflect on what you know before looking at these alternatives. If the question stem does not seem to provide sufficient information about what is being asked, then glance over the alternatives to get a better idea.
