James Alcock, Ph.D.
Or so I thought. After our return from China, Paul Kurtz recounted this incident in an article in CSICOP's journal, the Skeptical Inquirer . A few months later, a physician responded in letter to the editor: All too often bronchial infections are due to viruses and therefore not treatable with antibiotics. Unfortunately, there is such a demand from the lay public to treat everything with antibiotics that it is not unusual for the encumbered physician to prescribe them for infections they know cannot be helped by antibiotics. . . . If this was a viral infection, then the antibiotic and the snake bile were of equal efficacy [1]. But I got better, didn't I? Doesn't that tell me that the antibiotic worked? When we talk about the appeal of this treatment or that treatment, this is what is at the heart of it all we use medicines because they seem to work. If we get better, we naturally credit the treatment (whether it had any effect or not). And when we do not improve, we naturally assume that the treatment did not work, and we may then seek out other therapies that might. So-called alternative or complementary therapies are popular only to the extent that they can satisfy some people's needs better than conventional medical therapies do. If every visit to the family physician cured our complaints and satisfied our needs (the two are not necessarily the same), then the vast majority of people would never consider alternate therapies. And if, once people tried alternative therapies, they did not seem to be effective, most people would stop using them and they would eventually die out.

42. Positive Psychology: An Alternative Vision*
Clearly, an alternative vision of Positive psychology is needed. A constructivist approach thus offers an alternative vision for Positive psychology.

Positive Psychology: An Alternative Vision* Derrick Klaassen , Trinity Western University *This extended abstract has been submitted to be presented at the Biennial Meeting of the International Society for Theoretical Psychology in Calgary, AB, in June 2001. Printable Version The inherent paradox of revolutions, whether political or ideological, is that they must, if successful, inherit the power once loathed, and thus ultimately face the challenge of practicing an alternative vision that does not replicate the oppressive hegemony of its precedents. In order to resolve this paradox, the practice of an alternative vision must allow for and encourage the propagation of multiple paradigms, as well as maintain a critical, self-reflective ‘gaze’ to combat the tendency to enshrine one’s privileged position, excluding or ignoring competing claims (Chesterton, 1990). Positive Psychology is a current movement in Psychology that proposes an alternative orientation to a discipline that has become enamoured with the study, classification, and treatment of pathology. While a variety of psychologists have been involved in the research and practice of positive Psychology for quite some time (e.g. Bandura’s self-efficacy studies, Maddi’s hardiness construct, Wong’s research on personal meaning, to name only a few), the term ‘Positive Psychology’ has most recently become associated with a network of researchers spearheaded by Past-APA president Martin Seligman.

THROUGH THE TAROT LOOKING GLASS
In Search of Self

Guide to the Psychodynamics of Tarot Imagery by E. Z. Uecker, OTR Through The Tarot Looking Glass is a psychospiritual self-help book that reviews Tarot card symbolism in terms of Jungian archetypes and the images of the collective unconscious. The result is a clear and concise guide to the discovery of self as defined by Carl Jung, through a process of integrating unconscious aspects of the psyche with the conscious ego-self. This individuation process leads to a new whole self that transcends ego Higher Self actualization.
This handbook ties together the historical aspects of Tarot with the theories of Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, beginning with an overview of their ideas to develop the connection between the two. Author Uecker then offers structured card exercises to facilitate an understanding of the unconscious aspects of the self, as they relate to life problems, soul lessons and ultimately the Life Path purpose. This is followed up by a process of problem solving and goal planning that encompasses all aspects of the whole self and defined life path purpose.
Through The Tarot Looking Glass offers a psychodynamic modality for understanding ourselves in terms of conscious ego, unconscious

Thanks for sharing your new found knowledge. Spending four, five or more years in graduate school, not to mention the tuition, is a big investment and you are very wise to look into the possible return on this investment. I think psychology can be very competitive, especially in highly respected APA accredited programs, but if child, neuro, or health psychology are your interests, you should definetely go after it. Psychologists are licensed very generically, I suppose similar to a physician. Unlike medical doctors, however, specialty areas are not as well regulated. The American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) provides additional certification for specialty areas such as neuropsychology which is recognized and coveted in universitites but not necessarily by the general public. It sounds like you are on the right track and I appreciate you sharing this information. Hopefully others who read your post will also take the time to do their research.

Orthorexia Nervosa:
Obsession with Dietary Purity as an Eating Disorder
  • Health Food Junkie Obsession with dietary perfection can sometimes do more harm than good, says a physician in alternative medicine (and one who has been there). Originally published in the October 1997 issue of Yoga Journal, and reprinted here by permission of the author, this piece coins the term "orthorexia nervosa" in describing a novel eating disorder of recent years: extreme fixation on eating proper food that becomes pathological.
  • Clarifying Orthorexia: Obsession with Dietary Purity as an Eating Disorder Discussion of the "Health Food Junkie" article (just above) on internet listgroups revealed emotional defensiveness, along with misconceptions and misunderstandings, among those caught in the spotlight or who objected to yet more labels. Here's some clarification and further explanation about where to draw the line regarding your own dietary behavior along with helpful tips for self- examination.

http://oldsci.eiu.edu/psychology/Spencer/Existential.html
Existential Psychology Existential Psychology represents a synthesis of philosophy and psychology. The philosophical bases were formed by Kierkegaard and Heidegger. The most popular one-sentence summary is "existence precedes essence". The followers who have translated their thinking into statements about personality include the Europeans Ludwig Binswanger, Medard Boss, and Victor Frankl. Major American theorists include Rollo May and Paul Tillich, but I will also include some writings of Salvatore Maddi. The following notes represent an attempt at a synthesis of the writings of many theorists. I will not attempt to associate each concept with it's originator. You can get this detailed information in a graduate class. The writings of Rollo May are considered as a primary source. Core of Personality I. Core Tendency: To achieve authentic being. Being signifies the special quality of human mentality (aptly called intentionality), that makes life a series of decisions, each involving an alternative that precipitates persons into an unknown future and an alternative that pushes them back into a routine, predictable past. Choosing the future brings ontological anxiety (fear of the unknown), whereas choosing the safe status quo brings ontological guilt (sense of missed opportunity). Authenticity involves accepting this painful state of affairs and finding the courage or hardiness to persist in the face of ontological anxiety and choose the future, thereby minimizing ontological guilt.

(Return to Classics index [Classics Editor's Note: Footnotes are in square brackets; references in round brackets] CONSTRUCT VALIDITY IN PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTS Lee J. Cronbach and Paul E. Meehl (1955) First published in Psychological Bulletin Validation of psychological tests has not yet been adequately conceptualized, as the APA Committee on Psychological Tests learned when it undertook (1950-54) to specify what qualities should be investigated before a test is published. In order to make coherent recommendations the Committee found it necessary to distinguish four types of validity, established by different types of research and requiring different interpretation. The chief innovation in the Committee's report was the term construct validity ] This idea was first formulated by a subcommittee (Meehl and R. C. Challman) studying how proposed recommendations would apply to projective techniques, and later modified and clarified by the entire Committee (Bordin, Challman, Conrad, Humphreys, Super, and the present writers). The statements agreed upon by the Committee (and by committees of two other associations) were published in the Technical Recommendations ). The present interpretation of construct validity is not "official" and deals with some areas where the Committee would probably not be unanimous. The present writers are solely responsible for this attempt to explain the concept and elaborate its implications.
