Utopia gets surprisingly mixed reviews in classical music. Any number of artists and their admirers will tell you that their favorite performances are those that had no rehearsals. Then there are those who create a mystique around themselves by insisting on greenhouse circumstances that musicians are said to long for. The latest is Krystian Zimerman , the Polish pianist who is touring the world playing both Chopin concertos with an ensemble he hand-picked himself, the Polish Festival Orchestra, which offers him endless rehearsals and a chance to analyze nearly every chord. Even though the group has played engagements all over Europe and spent seven days making the Deutsche Grammophon recording that would take other forces seven hours, there are still daily rehearsals up to four hours long. "Five years ago, I wouldn't have dared this performance, because it's so far out of range of the kinds of performances we have on the market," he says.

Born in 1956 in Zabrze, Poland, Krystian Zimerman began playing the piano at the age of five; he later studied with Andrei Jasinski at the Music Conservatory in Katowice. Having achieved early success at a number of piano competitions, he embarked upon his international career after winning the 1975 Warsaw Chopin Competition where he was the youngest competitor. Following the Warsaw competition, Krystian Zimerman made debut appearances in many European countries and also travelled to Paris to meet Artur Rubinstein. His Salzburg Festival debut in 1977 was followed by extensive tours in Japan in 1978 and the USA in 1979. In 1980 he appeared for the first time at the Lucerne Festival and the Salzburg Whitsun Concerts together with Herbert von Karajan. Krystian Zimerman does not regard his greatest achievement as his prize-winning performances at numerous international competitions but the fact that he has managed to devote a period of time each season to the learning of new repertoire. Each year he adds one or more piano concertos, chamber works and a large number of solo pieces to his repertory. Over the past 21 years his repertory has grown to such an extent that he now commands more than 30 different programmes of solo works, and an equal number of piano concertos. In addition to around 50 concert appearances per year, Krystian Zimerman also gives chamber-music performances and master classes.

KRYSTIAN ZIMERMAN - PIANO MONDAY APRIL 5, 2004 Time: 20.45 - le Muse THEATRE OF Ancona PROGRAmme

Chopin: Sonata in si bemolle minore op. 35
Ravel: Valses nobles et sentimentales
Godowski: Suite JAVA Nel Kraton, Il vulcano Bromo, Gamelan, I giardini di Buitenzorg, Nelle strade della vecchia Batavia At six years of age Krystian Zimerman was surprised to discover that pianos were not found in ever home. Until then he had thought that playing the piano was just as important as eating, drinking and sleeping. At that age he had already made his debut on Polish television, playing two of his own compositions. Following his very first lessons with his father, Krystian Zimerman attended the Katowice Academy of Music, where he studied with Andrzej Jasinski, who was eventually to become his only teacher. Two months after completing his education he won the prestigious Chopin Competition at the age of eighteen (1975). Although he had already played extensively in Poland and abroad and had won numerous other competitions, his Chopin victory launched Zimerman into the whirlwind life of an international concert pianist. He considers the most significant moment in his life to be when he met and began studying with the great musician Arthur Rubinstein, who also became one of his greatest friends. Another important turning point in his training was his concert and recording studio work with conductors such as Bernstein, Giulini and Karajan. Similarly, the Piano Concerto dedicated to him by Lutoslawski and performed by Zimerman in a world premiere in 1989 was also one of his greatest achievements.

PAAVALI JUMPPANEN, pianist "Paavali Jumppanen's technique is big and his imaginative daring even bigger. His unusual recital prompted the observation that great artists take you places you haven't been to before. Jumppanen's performance of the Dutilleux Sonata was masterly in its handling of rhythm, color and texture, and in its headstrong, controlled abandon."
- THE BOSTON GLOBE
"Paavali Jumppanen, who gave a recital in the Young Concert Artists Series at the 92nd Street Y, offered a thoughtful, passionate and compelling journey. He performs with immense power and drive, and commands an extraordinary range of colors. The piano sings beautifully, but with a voice that is big and full of expressive possibilities."
- THE NEW YORK TIMES
"At the Kennedy Center, Jumppanen left no doubt that he has the dexterity of a Paganini and the strength of a Titan, from J.S. Bach, to five attention-getters by Liszt to brief tastes of music by his Finnish compatriots, to Dutilleux's Sonata. In Liszt's own daunting 'Mephisto Waltz,' never has the Devil made such a marvelous racket."

77. Classical Net Review - Chopin - Piano Concertos
To mark the 150th year since Chopin s death, Polish pianist krystian zimerman decided to form an orchestra whose function would be to perform these concertos

It may same odd to focus on the orchestra when discussing a new recording of Chopin's piano concertos, given the "bad press" that the composer's orchestral writing has received in the past 170 years or so. It is true that Chopin's genius lay in what he did with the piano and not in with other instruments. Nevertheless, he was competent and, at times, more than that when he wrote the orchestral parts to these concertos. Also, it should be remembered that they are the work of a man who was only around 20, so allowances should be made for inexperience as well. Zimerman is not a stranger to conducting from the keyboard. Several years ago, when he and Leonard Bernstein were recording Beethoven's five piano concertos, the conductor's relatively sudden death left the first two concertos untouched. Following Beethoven's example, Zimerman decided that he could be the conductor as well as the soloist, and the results were a success, as they are here. It is no surprise, then, that the orchestral playing here benefits from uncommon care and preparation. Zimerman shapes every phrase and refines every sonority, and while he is highly attentive, he doesn't seem merely fussy. He doesn't try to make the orchestral writing into something it's not, but he does make sure that it lives up to its full potential.
