Nach verschiedenen Auftritten und erfolgreicher Beteiligung an Klavier-Wettspielen, machte er beim Prager Beethoven-Wettbewerb 1975 international auf sich aufmerksam. Krystian Zimerman wurde am 5. Dez. 1956 als Sohn eines Pianisten in Zabrze Der als ¤uŸerst skrupul¶s bekannte Pianist gibt seit 1989 Konzerte ausschlieŸlich auf seinen eigenen Fl¼geln. Krystian Zimerman: Manchmal ist es nicht mein eigener im physischen Sinne: Es sind Fl¼gel, die f¼r die jeweilige Tournee gemietet werden. Die passe ich vor der Tour an oder baue sogar meine eigene Klaviatur ein. Ich habe die Jahre zwischen 1975 und ’89 sehr gelitten. Ich habe meinem Publikum immer nur 60 Prozent der Interpretation abliefern k¶nnen. Manchmal auch weniger. Eine Klaviatur einzubauen ist eine Sache von mehreren Tagen. Das kann man f¼r ein einzelnes Konzert gar nicht machen. In den USA habe ich mir jetzt ¼brigens auch einen Fl¼gel ausgesucht, in den ich eine Klaviatur aus Europa einsetze. Nach dem 11. September hat sich dort eine derartige Panik ausgepr¤gt, dass ich es nicht mehr riskieren m¶chte, einen Fl¼gel ¼ber den Atlantik zu schicken.Mein Publikum ist mir das wert. Ich muss nicht sagen, dass es ein sechsstelliger Betrag ist, den ich im Jahr daf¼r aufbringen muss. Das begrenzt dann auch die Zahl der Konzerte.

Später standen dann jedoch andere Themen als instrumentale Virtuosität im Vordergrund seiner kompositorischen Entwicklung. Trotzdem beschäftigten die Pläne zu einem Klavierkonzert Lutoslawski für lange Zeit. Es war der Pianist Krystian Zimerman, der den Komponisten schließlich diese Pläne in die Tat umsetzen ließ. In seinem Klavierkonzert vollzieht Lutoslawski eine große Zusammenfassung seiner kompositorischen Errungenschaften. Es ist in freier Atonalität gehalten, und wie in den meisten seiner Werke verwendet er seine spezifische Variante der Aleatorik: auskomponierte Abschnitte wechseln mit sogenannten Ad-libitum-Passagen, in denen das Notenmaterial von den Spielern frei zu variieren und zu rhythmisieren ist - Lutoslawski spricht von "Skulpturen aus flüssigem Metall".
