The 25 years of Mr. Zimerman's artistic activity have been marked by regular meetings with his own dedicated audiences, which ardently look forward to every concert. Wherever his concert tours take him, in the music centers of Europe, Asia and America, he always recognizes familiar faces. During the last 10 seasons, since he has resolved to travel with his own concert piano, he has managed to accustom his audience and concert organizers to this unusual and only seemingly inconvenient gear. Mr. Zimerman has applied several technical inventions of his own which have made it possible for him, as for other musicians, to take his instrument along on tours. The confidence afforded by his own thoroughly familiar instrument, combined with his piano-building expertisefirst acquired in Katowice and developed through permanent cooperation with the Steinway Company in Hamburgallows him to eliminate, or reduce to the absolute minimum, everything that might distract him from purely musical issues.
Mr. Zimerman's comparatively early acquaintance with the main developments of European musicerman, Russian, French and othersprecluded him from becoming a "Chopin specialist." Instead, it stirred in him the ambition, which he has achieved in the last 10 years, of performing music in the place and culture of its origin: French works in Paris; Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert in Vienna; Brahms in Hamburg; American music played in New York and, in one notable instance, conducted by the composer himselfLeonard Bernstein. "If I were an actor," he argues, "I would also set myself the aim of performing Shakespeare in London and Chekhov in Russia."

Deutsche Grammophon 423 571-2 GH full price There aren't many composers who have left a legacy of pianism; compositionwise or in execution, that can match the one of Hungarian composer Franz (Ferenc) Liszt. He left a formidable bulk of works, consisting of compositions of his own as well as transcripions of works of predecessors and contemporary colleagues. The Beethoven symphonies and several of Schubert's lieder are examples of Liszt's great fascination for the piano as medium for the most diverse musical expressions. The composer-musician Franz Liszt was regarded as the greatest of all pianists of his time, which says quite a bit considering one of his most ardent admirers was friend, rival and colleague Frédéric Chopin: a most able pianist himself.
However it is as composer he has made his distinguished mark in music history. Franz Liszt is nothing less than one of the most original among composers, in his highly personal and experimental music. When one is confronted with the works of Liszt it becomes apparent that this man did not find the excisting musical conventions sufficiently developed or quite simply inadequate as frameworks for his compositions. Of the staggering amount of works he produced, only an extremely maginal number are written in the sonata form; two of which are presented here. Other composers naturally also have a fair portion of their opus, written in forms alternative to the sonata, but with Liszt this form is hardly ever in use, and when it is, it is always challenged.

Pianist, born 5 December 1956 in Zabrze.
Zimerman began to study piano at age five with his father, also a pianist. Two years later he became a student of Andrzej Jasinski and remained a student of his until his training was completed. In 1973 he won top honors at the Ludwig van Beethoven International Piano Competition in Hradec Kralove, and his first prize at the INTERNATIONAL FRYDERYK CHOPIN PIANO COMPETITION in 1975 launched his international career. Artur Rubinstein invited Zimerman to Paris in 1976, and this would prove very significant to the development of the young artist.
Krystian Zimerman has performed with many exceptional orchestras and worked with some of the world's most outstanding conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, Herbert von Karajan, Bernard Haitink, Seiji Ozawa, Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, André Previn, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, and Simon Rattle. He has worked many times with Kaja Danczowska, Kyung-Wha Chung, and Gidon Kremer.
Zimerman's recording career is based on an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, a label for which the artist has recorded twenty-two albums that have brought him a number of prestigious awards. The artist's repertoire encompasses the works of Fryderyk Chopin, Franz Liszt, Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms, Edvard Grieg, Béla Bartók, and the chamber music of César Franck and

Krystian Zimerman is a deceptively challenging pianist, largely because his playing has none of the self-conscious embroidery, hyperbole or eccentricity that often accompanies iconoclasm. Zimerman - the 47-year-old Polish pianist who last appeared in metro Detroit 20 years ago and made his overdue area recital debut Saturday - belongs in the small circle of the world’s elite pianists. But he plays with such supple technique and such elegant control of sonority and pacing that the riskier elements of his music-making nearly dissolve in a monopolizing wash of beauty. The conservative program he offered Saturday furthered the illusion; Beethoven’s Sonata No. 31, Op. 110, and Chopin’s B Minor Sonata were the major works, along with the Six Klavierstucke, Op. 118, by Brahms and Chopin’s Impromptu in F-sharp, Op. 36. But make no mistake: Zimerman’s rigorous intellect subjected every familiar interpretive question to fresh analysis. Sometimes this led to unconventional ideas, like the zesty tempos in the Brahms miniatures or the many passages in the Beethoven sonata in which expressive rubato and rhythmic hesitations nearly brought the music to a standstill. Zimerman stretched phrases to their breaking points, but his inner clock never mortgaged forward momentum in favor of reverie - though there were close calls. Zimerman’s Beethoven suggested a tantalizing compromise between patrician eloquence and robust physicality. Op. 110 is the most songful of Beethoven’s late sonatas, and Zimerman underscored the first movement’s sweet lyricism. Then, using speed and exaggerated dynamics, he brought Lizstian bravura to the humorous second movement.

When opposites meet: Krystian Zimerman, Leonard Bernstein and the Beethoven Concertos
When pianist Krystian Zimerman goes on a North-American concert tour, don't expect to hear him just anywhere. On this year's tour, he made it to all of three cities: Chicago, Toronto and New York. Though the pianist, who turned 40 on December 7, 1996, could fill concert halls in every major city, he simply prefers to limit the number of his performances to about 50 per year. Mr. Zimerman who, according to The New York Times, is "considered one of the most remarkable pianists of his generation", has many other interests which keep him from overextending himself. Fluent in several languages, knowledgeable in history and aesthetics as well as in science and acoustics, he radiates an air of scholarliness and gentility. Yet this is the pianist Leonard Bernstein chose in the late 1980s to be the soloist in his cycle of Beethoven piano concertos with the Vienna Philharmonic. Intended to conclude his Beethoven orchestral cycle, it was scheduled to be recorded by Unitel and Deutsche Grammophon. One might have expected a more extroverted soloist, but not a young pianist called a "meticulous, sometimes studied aristocrat" ("Classic CD" in a review of the concertos).

The program couples late Brahms ("Klavierstucke," Op. 118) and late Beethoven (Sonata in E-flat, Op. 101) with Chopin his F-sharp Major Impromptu and B Minor Sonata. Now in his late 40s, the Polish-born musician came to prominence when he won the Chopin Competition in 1975. His debut in London followed two years later, with New York in 1979. He is known for his Chopin and Brahms, among other composers. Zimerman often likes to play music in the place of its origin: thus, Chopin in Paris, Brahms in Hamburg, Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert in Vienna. Even Leonard Bernstein in America. He and Bernstein worked together for 13 years. The eminent Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski dedicated his Piano Concerto to Zimerman. A work by a Polish composer is often on the pianist's program, sometimes as an encore, sometimes not. He has played with most of the leading conductors in the world and collaborated with many important musicians. Over the past 24 years, Zimerman had made 22 recordings with Deutsche Grammophon.

Witold Lutoslawski's honorable dedication of his Piano Concerto to Krystian Zimerman inspired the pianist to a similar treatment of that work: it was self-evident that it should be performed in Warsaw during the Warsaw Autumn Festival of Contemporary Music, with the composer as conductor. During each of his New York recitals, he has taken care to perform a Polish composition as part of the program or as an encore. For several consecutive seasons he performed Karol Szymanowski's works in principal music centers on three continents. His encounters with pre-eminent musicians-performers of chamber music and conductors-have been, he claims, his greatest luck. He has repeatedly performed with Kaja Danczowska, Kyung-Wha Chung, Gidon Kremer and about 40 other celebrities of the musical world..
