Daniel Martyn Lewis performed an all-Bach program for his North American premiere. The Formal Opening Night Gala concert featured the spectacular Russian pianist Andrei Gavrilov , returning for his 25th anniversary season, in a stirring concert of Bach and Chopin. Gold medalist of the famed Tchaikovsky Competition, Gavrilov was one of the first young Russians to appear in America. Illustrious piano performances were likewise presented by Agustin Anievas John Bayless Bernadene Blaha Victor Borge Mirian Conti Kevin Fitz-Gerald Kemal Gekic Carlo Grante Alain Jacquon Francine Kay Piers Lane Valentina Lisitsa Hamish Milne Pedja Muzijevic Juana Zayas Thomas Hrynkiw , and Yamaha artists Frederic Chiu and Anne-Marie McDermott "Every year seems to be another knock-out. Yamaha has been a major sponsor of the Newport Music Festival since 1987. I can't imagine doing this festival without them," Malkovich admits. "Yamaha has been so helpful. The pianos always arrive on time, properly tuned, and with 64 concerts spread over 17 days, that's extremely important to us. Logistically, it was flawless, and much of that was due to the cooperation of Yamaha."
John Bayless at The Breakers The Newport Music Festival, long synonymous with outstanding classical performances in a Rhode Island community renowned for seaside elegance, garnered yet another accolade last February. For the second consecutive year, it was chosen by Cadogan Press as one of "America's Elite 1000 - The Ultimate List," placing Newport in company with just 19 other national events including the Academy Awards, the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament, and The Metropolitan Opera.

Continued from front page Cuban born pianist Juana Zayas made her Newport debut with an all Chopin evening on July 9. Other notable performances included a selection of Azerbaijani love songs featuring pianist Farhad Badabeily with the Kasimova sisters, Baku's leading sopranos; an opening night gala with Irish pianist John O'Conor; a "Schubertabend" ("Schubert evening"); and a morning devoted to Mozart. Danish musician/comedian Victor Borge's evening performance midway through the festival was one of the most popular attractions. The schedule also featured three midnight concerts, all performances of Liszt, at Marble House.

Kim (Piano) Winner of 2001 International Web Concert Hall Competition (Honorary Mention) Pianist Angela Jia Kim has garnered acclaim for being "a superb colorist able to blend all components of the aural palette" and "a piano virtuoso whose talent and energy have no limitations." Maria Curcio, the eminent pupil of Artur Schnabel, described Angela as "a real virtuoso… with astonishing artistry" and predicted that she would be "one of the most formidable pianists, representing her country on the world stage." She has performed throughout the United States, Canada and Europe at the Salle Cortot in Paris, the Chopin Academy in Warsaw, the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., and other recital venues in Holland, Montreal, and Vancouver. She was a guest artist in a PBS special: "Studio III Presents Angela Kim" that was aired in the midwest, and her performances have been broadcast on

For over thirty years, pianist and teacher Donald Hageman series. Since the series' inception, nearly sixty pianists have graced its roster, and many have been so warmly received that Dayton audiences have requested their return on three or four separate occasions. The has provided the Midwestern debut for many of these artists, and a large number have gone on to achieve recognition throughout the world. To date, the series has offered a podium to pianists such as Frank Braley, Steven DeGroote, Kemal Gekic, Caio Pagano, Sergei Schepkin, Juana Zayas, and many others of international distinction. In addition, the has offered the area premieres for contemporary works by composers such as Messiaen, Prokofieff, Sessions, Shostakovitch, and Stravinsky. The guiding philosophy of the has been to celebrate the artistry of the piano by presenting performers of rare distinction, many of whom have traveled uniquely individualistic paths of accomplishment. Happily, that philosophy has been warmly embraced over the years by its audience, which has proven to be one of the most knowledgable and appreciative in America.

    July 9-25
Newport Music Festival underwent a conceptual shift 24 years ago when Mark Malkovitch III took over the captain's chair as general manager after its sixth season.
Founded as a festival to highlight new American music, Newport was started in 1969 by members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra who wanted a summer season in this Rhode Island yachting paradise much like the Boston Symphony Orchestra had in Tanglewood.
"They tried to do outdoor opera and it just didn't work," says Malkovitch's son and Newport Marketing Director Mark Malkovitch IV. "A soprano lost her voice and a cello literally fell apart." Thoughts turned to presenting other forms of music in an alternate venue, namely indoors. Newport's spate of stunning turn-of-the-century mansions, once private homes of Vanderbilts and Astors, were in the process of being opened to the public through The Preservation Society of Newport.
"The Orchestra seized on the chance to do chamber music in these beautiful chambers," says Malkovitch the younger. "That's how it all started."
It also set a course on quite a different latitude than the one it's currently navigating. "When the Newport Music Festival was first founded, it made its mark by doing unknown American music. [Music critic] Harold Schoenberg caught on to it and he really put Newport on the map," continues son Malkovitch. "The festival's thrust originally was purely American music, but that changed when Dad took over."

With that mission accomplished, Ms. de Toth is the first woman to record the Bartók solo piano works. These beginnings have launched Eroica on a fast track to our goal of international acceptance and recognition. We have initiated an intensive series of auditions, which have resulted in the signing of over a hundred brilliantly gifted new artists. The Fourth Sonata is passionately Romantic, yet with some strangely gritty dissonances which cast doubt on its optimism... Hamish Milne, a Russian specialist, plays with evident conviction and his customary power. The recording is excellent and the booklet notes are helpful." -Jack, BBC 1 CD Set HYP-67328 $17.70
