This aptly confirmed what New York Times' chief critic Harold Schonberg, having heard her perform these virtuoso pieces at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, wrote: "It was altogether an imposing feat, and it may be that we have with us a Chopinist to the manner born . . ." Of her recording of the Chopin Preludes, Schonberg further stated: "She filters Chopin's notes through a fertile mind, with a very personal but never overdone kind of romanticism that looks back to the great pianists of a previous age." In recent seasons she played all of Chopin's Etudes at the 2000 World Piano Pedagogy Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Piano Festival Northwest 2003 in Portland, Oregon. She is regularly invited by the prestigious Serate Musicali to give recitals at Verdi Hall in Milan and has performed with various orchestras in America and Europe. Her performances have been broadcast by National Public Radio and New York's WQXR. Juana Zayas's prodigious talent emerged early. At age seven, she gave her first solo recital, and four years later, graduated from the Peyrellade Conservatory in her native Havana with a performance of the Schumann Concerto. She left Cuba to attend the Conservatoire National Sup©rieur de Musique de Paris where she studied piano with Joseph Benvenuti and chamber music with Ren© Le Roy, taking First Prize in both. Other aspects of pianism which were to serve her well in Chopin first surfaced in the Prokofiev performance: her deft way with third hand effect, the wide range of her pianistic colors and touches, her flawlessly dazzling virtuosity in the mad swaths of keyboard covering technical passages. The grotesquerie found only in Prokofiev during this recital revealed her ability to fall in line with his wit. The artist was clearly drained at the end of such a recital. But she graciously provided three encores: some Bach/ Busoni and a Scarlatti sonata bon-bon.

Published Sunday, October 14, 2001 Latina pianists shine with talent, tenacity BY JAMES ROOS jroos@herald.com The parade of classical pianists marching through South Florida this month includes three who upend the stereotype of the iron-fisted male in a tailcoat. They are fleet-fingered Latin ladies: Alicia de Larrocha, Zenaida Manfugás and Juana Zayas. De Larrocha, the acclaimed virtuosa from Barcelona, plays a wide repertoire convincingly but is closely identified with Spanish masters like Granados, whose music she'll celebrate Friday. Manfugás, who'll open FIU's Music Festival 2001 on Oct. 25, was a protégé of Ernesto Lecuona and the legendary Walter Gieseking, but is a comparatively well-kept secret. She never achieved extraordinary fame, in part because of racism. Zayas, who plays this afternoon at the University of Miami's Gusman Hall, and Thursday with the Symphony of the Americas in Broward, seems an even better kept secret. Like De Larrocha and Manfugás, she was weaned by her mother on music, then went to study abroad, where she won prizes, but married young and began raising a family. Combining motherhood and performances didn't work for her at that time, and now she's making a comeback. No matter the difference in details, each of these women has striven to fulfill their musical ideals.
