John Corigliano, winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his Symphony No. 2 , is internationally celebrated as one of the leading composers of his generation. In orchestral, chamber, opera and film work, he has won global acclaim for his highly expressive and compelling compositions as well as his kaleidoscopic, ever-expanding technique. Corigliano's Pulitzer Prize-winning Symphony No. 2 , an expansion and rewriting of his String Quartet (1995), was premiered in November 2000 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Seiji Ozawa conducting; a tour the following month included a performance in Carnegie Hall and the first recording of the symphony, paired with The Mannheim Rocket , is scheduled for release in spring 2004 on Ondine Records with John Storgårds conducting The Helsinki Philharmonic. In March 2000, Corigliano won another coveted prize: the "Oscar," the Academy Award, for "The Red Violin," his third film score. He was the second classical composer, after Aaron Copland, to be so honored. FIRST METHODIST CHURCH
This information was donated by Bob Sharpe from a 1922 book by the church The beginnings of Methodism in Dravosburg in the form of a permanent organization was in the summer of 1899. However, prior to this time, several attempts had been made to plant a Methodist Church in this community. Certain ones, prominent among whom was Brother W.T. Fenton, felt there was a real need for a society of this denomination in the town, and believed the time was opertune for its organization. The case was brought before the Reverend James Mechem, D.D., Presiding Elder of the Washington District, Pittsburgh Conference. He immediately took the matter up and sent the Reverend James Williams, of West Elizabeth, to look over the ground and report. Upon the recommendation of Dr. Williams, the field was entered and Bishop Charles H. Fowler, presiding over the Annual Conference held in Johnstown, PA, appointed M. Blaine Lytle to take charge of the work. He preached his first sermon in the German Lutheran Church, before a small congregation on Sunday afternoon, October 8

Connie Jo Kirk Born and raised in Austin, Connie JO Kirk started school at the age of four. By the time she reached the second grade at Blackshear Elementary School, she was either singing in talent shows or competing in dance contests. One of Austin's most successful female singers, Connie Kirk has performed around the country with a variety of music greats including the Temptations and W.C. Clark. She began her jazz singing career with encouragement from her junior high school choir director, Mr. James Shepard. And she competed in several state singing competitions walking away with first place medals. Connie accomplished all of this despite serious health problems that nearly claimed her life as a young child and caused her to lose about 60 percent of her hearing until she was six. A self-taught pianist, Connie composed her own songs as a child and overcame serious speech impediments through her love of music. While attending Texas Southern University in Houston, she earned a degree in Education with a minor in Art. In August 1970, Connie auditioned for the TSU "Ocean of Soul" Marching Band vocal competition. Connie won and performed the whole season at all of TSU's games. She also performed at one pro game (Houston Oilers versus New Orleans Saints) and one all-star pro game.

Watch and Pray
Certainly this is one of the most moving songs in all of art song repertory. The text is of a slave mother talking to her child about tomorrow's auction, where they will most likely be separated. Capturing poignancy and horror in an art song is an amazing feat. The first time we heard the song was January 21, 2001 at Hampton University when Lorraine McFadden Bell, soprano, gave her faculty recital "Art Songs and Spirituals by African American Composers." She sang Watch and Pray as well as another song by Undine Smith Moore, Love Let the Wind Cry…How I Adore Thee (text by Sappho). For this writer, the African American art song is the pinnacle of music that has given me joy since my youth. I discovered gospel music on our local radio station in the mountains of West Virginia. As a young adult my interest expanded to include folk singers doing spirituals and, more recently, the spirituals arranged for Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle. I also enjoyed Aretha Franklin and her magnificent instrument. Until recently, I had not heard art songs by African American composers. All that changed November 5, 2000 when Norfolk Art Song Society brought the elder statesman of this repertory, Dr. Willis Patterson, who compiled the Anthology

Aaron Bell
Musician whose career embraced jazz and academia
Peter Vacher
Monday September 1, 2003
The Guardian

It was while playing in New York with pianist Billy Taylor that bassist turned pianist Aaron Bell, who has died aged 81, was spotted by Duke Ellington. Thus it was in April 1960 that he replaced Jimmy Woode, an arrival that coincided with an extremely creative period for the Ellington band. Thrown in at the deep end, Bell stayed for two years, the time of such seminal Ellington projects as the Nutcracker Suite, the Peer Gynt Suite and Suite Thursday. He was on the soundtrack recordings for the movie Paris Blues (1961), again with Ellington, and performed on any number of Duke's other albums, including sessions with Coleman Hawkins and John Coltrane.

Earlier Days of Dancing
by Elfriede Fischer Rowe
Lawrence, Kansas
ca. 1960 According to a recent news story, learning the waltz with its body contact, was being offered to interested K.U. students. And the article pointed out it was not to revive by-gone days but purely to learn the dance. Lawrence has had dancing teachers as far back as the late 1800's. One such class was conducted by Georgia Brown in one of the rooms of the Commercial Club. The club rooms were on the third floor of the old First National Bank building on the northeast corner of 8th and Massachusetts. The bank's name then was the Merchants National Bank. The Commercial Club was made up of local Lawrence merchants and citizens in other professions. Mrs. John Bell, mother of the late Bonnie Bell Houston, played the piano for the dance students. Georgia Brown not only taught dancing, but she put on local plays as well. Jean Piatt, who became Mrs. Arthur Henley, taught University men and women after we had mastered the art and were going to dances. Someone recalled those classes were held in Pythian Hall. A much more enjoyable dancing class followed Professor Skaar. Alice Guenther (Mrs. Harold Bagby) and Nelli-May Schall started a class at IOOF Hall. They were young and still in school, so discipline was slack. These young teachers seemed to go in for costume dances for the class on certain occasions. On Washington's birthday, the girls dressed up as Martha and on Valentine's Day, they made up as valentines, There were other dance teachers through the years that followed. Bernice Ackerman (Lopez) taught ballet, as did Helen Topping. Jane Breidenthal taught tap dancing in Eagles Hall. A group of boys and girls of Junior High age met on Saturday mornings at Holloway Hall above the grocery store at 19th and Massachusetts, Pinckney School offered ballet after school for a small sum. This was in the 30's. Square dancing was a popular dance with University High School boys and girls.
