A Man For All Seasons...and then some Pianist, critic, Russophile, curator of the arcane, champion of the forgotten, defender of the worthy but unknown - such is John Bell Young, a Renaissance man for all seasons, and then some.
"Make love and do battle!" the Russian composer Alexander Scriabin is reported to have said. Much the same can be said about the quotidian philosophy of John Bell Young, a Scriabin devotee who has made a career out of challenging the status quo and getting away with it. A pianist and writer whose eclectic concert career has taken him from Moscow to Mazatlan, and from Paris to El Paso, exults gleefully over a certain lack of strategy that has made him something of a cause celebre in recent years, a kind of new age middle-aged bad boy of classical music. "Who needs fame?" says Mr. Young, peering uneasily over the lower Manhattan from atop Tribeca's American Thread Building in New York, where he doesn't live, but maintained an office in the 1980s. "Look what it did for Christ…" Indeed, beyond the usual 15 minutes, the ever elusive quarry of celebrity has played no part in his unusual life. "OK, so I lied", he protests suddenly. "Actually, I'm fascinated by it, and could certainly live with it in the unlikely event it should ever happen to me, but to presume that without it it's impossible to harvest the extraordinary riches that life has to offer is nonsense, kwatsch, and propaganda , nor does it have anything to do with money…who says it's not possible to create your own reality?"

BOTH ANGEL AND DEVIL
One hundred years on, JOHN BELL YOUNG provides a critical appraisal of legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz
Many years ago, in the luxurious Upper East Side townhouse of Vladimir and Wanda Horowitz, Constance Keene, a prominent young pianist and a member of their inner circle, asked, after a game of bridge with her hosts, if she could play something for the maestro. Gracious as always, the dapper, nattily dressed Horowitz, his patterned silk bowtie and matching pocket square slightly akimbo, consented. Taking her seat at the Steinway grand in their elegant drawing room, awash with the fragrance of fresh roses, she launched into a performance of one of Rachmaninoff's most difficult works. She had chosen to play his Prelude in E flat minor, which is comprised in part of a continuous string of rapid double notes in the right hand alone. Looking for a reaction, and perhaps a critique of her performance, she waited for the master's verdict. After all, not only was Horowitz considered by many to be the greatest living pianist, but he had also been a friend of the composer. 'It was wonderful,' he said in the thickly accented English he seemed to value as distinctive ever since leaving Russia in 1927, 'but you should speed up at the end.'

3 John Bell Young BOTH ANGEL AND DEVIL Born in Berdichev, Ukraine, on 1 October 1903, Horowitz had an exceptionally savvy ear from childhood. Not limited either by his remote location or the habits of less dedicated musicians, he devoted himself, even at that young age, to studying the whole gamut of the musical literature. By the time he was a teenager he could play by memory transcriptions of whole symphonic works and operas, and was already intimately familiar with much vocal and chamber music. As a young man, Horowitz wore his hair long and bore an uncanny resemblance to Chopin. With virtually no money in his pocket, he abandoned Russia to find success early on when he nailed down an important engagement in Hamburg. His electrifying performance there of Tchaikovsky's famous B flat concerto brought the house down, a feat he repeated in New York in 1928, setting the press and music world on fire virtually overnight. Not since Liszt had anyone heard blistering octaves like they did that evening, or whole strings of notes purring in the ravishing pianissimo that would become his hallmark. Nor had the piano music devotees ever been exposed to bel canto phrasing so exceptionally deft and liquid that it that seemed to transform eighty eight keys into a chorus of voices and other instruments. Gelb likens him to 'a great and charismatic athlete who goes for broke; he made his unfettered performances feel like a joy ride for the public'.

Pianist, actor praised in New York
By Times Staff Writer Published December 14, 2003 Last year, actor Michael York and Tampa Bay area pianist and writer John Bell Young recorded Enoch Arden, composer Richard Strauss' long-obscure musical embellishment of Tennyson's epic poem. Now the two men have taken their show on the road and performed Enoch at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Dec. 5, earning a positive review in the New York Times. Wrote reviewer Anne Midgette: Enoch "rests as much on the text as on the music - Tennyson's poem is more dusted with Strauss's music than leavened by it - and the decline of the genre can be ascribed to changing literary tastes and the resistance of a modern audience to listening to highly sentimental verse for more than an hour and a quarter. "Still, Enoch Arden occasionally emerges as a vehicle for a star actor. On Friday it was Michael York, who has recorded the piece with the able young pianist John Bell Young and is now taking it around with him as a kind of calling card.

The people's pianist
The lush romanticism that made Vladimir Horowitz so beloved echoes through events marking the 100th anniversary of his birth.
By JOHN BELL YOUNG Published September 28, 2003 [Times file photo (1982)] Many years ago, in the luxurious Manhattan townhouse of Vladimir and Wanda Horowitz, a prominent young pianist named Constance Keene asked, after a game of bridge with her hosts, if she could play something for the maestro. ACTOR MICHAEL YORK GIVES NEW LIFE TO ENOCH ARDEN Michael York, with star turns in such classic films as Romeo and Juliet, Cabaret, The Three Musketeers , and Loganís Run , and recent comedic appearances in the Austin Powers movies, is an exceptionally versatile actor. The release of a new CD reveals just how remarkable a storyteller he is. For the first time in more than forty years, Enoch Arden, Richard Straussís melodrama for narrator and piano, is given eloquent new life. Set to Alfred, Lord Tennysonís famous narrative poem, Enoch Arden presents an enormous challenge for any actor, making it all the more remarkable that only one other professional actor Claude Rains has ever recorded it. Accompanying York on this new Americus Records release is pianist John Bell Young. Jim Svejda of KUSC in Los Angeles hailed it as ìa stunning new recording ñ very different from any ëEnochí Iíve heardî while the celebrated pianist Stephen Hough commented ìMy goodness, it is a wonderful performance. It brought tears to my eyes.î CNN Headline News also called it ìa wonderful CD î and AudioBooksToday reviewed ìthis passionate and quite beautiful productionî as follows : ìYork displays the crisp diction and precise pacing that keep him frequently employed as an audiobook narrator. He approaches the material with the appropriate degree of warmth and vigor, but does so with great finesse matching the spirit of the material without overstating the obvious. Straussís music, as presented by Young, is vital and undeniably dramatic.î

Richard Strauss's Enoch Arden
The Michael York and John Bell Young Recording (2002)
In October 2002 Americus Records released a new recording of Richard Strauss's Enoch Arden , a melodrama for piano and narrator set to the poem of Alfred Lord Tennyson. The distinguished Shakespearian, as well as celebrated stage and film actor, Michael York is joined by pianist John Bell Young in this performance, which marks the first recording of the work with a renowned actor since Claude Rains teamed up with Glenn Gould more than 40 years ago. What Michael York brings to his interpretation of Enoch is extraordinary for its intimacy and poignancy. And while contemporary scholarship no longer regards Enoch Arden as one of Tennyson's best efforts in narrative poetry, it may be that Michael York's interpretation may give pause to devotees of the genre to reconsider the work's overall effect, codifying, as it does, Victorian word-painting. Messieurs York and Young planned to perform Enoch Arden from time to time during 2002 in the US and in Europe, sometimes as benefits for deserving arts institutions, and also in conjunction with a showing of the 1915 silent film, Enoch Arden , by William Christy Cabanne and D.W. Griffiths, starring Lillian Gish and Wallace Reid.

Is there any difference between making a serious movie or a movie like Austin Powers? Or is it just work as usual?
Michael York: They're made the same way! Same techniques and so on. The old adage is that when you're making a comedy it's torture, and when you're doing tragedy it's a laugh a minute. There's a great sense of family on Austin Powers, which comes from Mike and Jay.
