    September 30, 2002
WASHINGTON, D.C. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Actor Michael York and Pianist John Bell Young Record Enoch Arden for Americus Records.
Legendary actor Michael York is joined by superb pianist John Bell Young in a refreshing recording of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's epic poem Enoch Arden set to music as a melodrama by Richard Strauss. The tale is an old one - two men in love with the same woman. If you have seen the 2000 movie Cast Away starring actor Tom Hanks then you know the shoreline. Tennyson however wrote his "script" more than 135 years ago. Pianist Stephen Hough said when he heard it, " My goodness, it is a wonderful performance! I had tears in my eyes listening... " In deciding to release Enoch Arden, Americus Records president, John DesMarteau, decided to include the entire Tennyson poem as part of the CD booklet. He said, "As far as I know this is the first time that the entire poem has been included with the music." In addition, John Bell Young has written some excellent interpretative notes and both he and Mr. York share their personal reflections on the tale and this recording.

    A NEW 'ENOCH'
JOHN BELL YOUNG tells his story of collaboration
    with British actor MICHAEL YORK
A funny thing happened to me recently on the way to New York Hollywood. What began as a campaign to restore to the art of melodrama something of its former prestige was transformed into a full-scale collaboration with a cinematic icon. Indeed, the events that made it possible tend to support the fundamental truth of an age-old aphorism: luck is the meeting of opportunity and preparation. While melodrama may evoke visions of rowdy temper tantrums and obsequious soap operas, it is, in fact, a centuries-old genre and an ancestor of multi-media programming. It is a kind of small-scale musical, setting forth a poem or narrative that is spoken rather than sung while an instrumental accompaniment paints in sound the mood and characters depicted. Many famous composers, including Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, and Schumann, penned these odd constructs where three art forms music, poetry, and theater coincide in a single work. For nineteenth century audiences, melodramas were roughly equivalent to modern cinema, but with one major difference: the audience had to visualize the story on its own terms.

    Argerich plays Schumann -
    reviewed by JOHN BELL YOUNG
'Ms Argerich and company pay glowing tribute to the composer's most celebrated chamber works.' Few composers have enriched the chamber music repertoire as significantly as Robert Schumann whose evergreen piano quintet remains every bit as popular today as it was a century ago. Nor has its appeal as a vehicle for chamber ensembles and pianists diminished, and with good reason: its generosity of material, memorable themes and touching sentiment haunt the listener long after the last notes have died away. In 1994, pianist Martha Argerich, joined by a select group of colleagues all personal friends as well recorded these sumptuous works in an all-Schumann concert at the Concertgebouw in historic Nijmegen, Holland (not to be confused with the world renowned hall of the same name in Amsterdam). Nijmegen is an historic college town well known for its critical, strategic role in the Second World War. In this survey of Schumann, whose spirit is amply captured on this disc, Ms Argerich and company pay glowing tribute to the composer's most celebrated chamber works. Of course, Ms Argerich has by now become something of a cult figure in classical music culture, made all the more palpable by her recent bout with and victory over cancer. Her thick mane and earth-mother persona belie that underneath it all is a spectacular virtuoso of the first rank who is not so self-centered as to set herself above a collaborative effort. Thus in the abundantly lyrical Quintet, her jewel-like sound and liquid phrasing prove ideally suited to the larger, integral task of weaving in and out, stealth like, among the soaring lines and musical precipices of the string players.

Liner Notes To John Bell Young's "Prisms" God May Not Be Dead, But Neither Is Sex (Scriabin Defended Against His Devotees
And Other Relevant Information) By John Bell Young Each of the composers represented on this disc, whatever their stature (or lack of it) in the history of music, have one thing in common: a prismatic imagination capable of discerning the strata of his immediate and historical environment, and expressing his relation to it in innumerable ways. Though every great composer gives expression to ideas governed essentially by spiritual contemplation and philosophical reflection, few have done so with the refractory sensibility of Alexander Scriabin, in whose music resides the heart and history of Russian culture itself. Indeed, in his case, the very idea of light and its diffusion are reinvented as the aesthetics of compositional procedure. Mahler, too, was no stranger to the symbolic potential of extra-musical ideas born of poetry, literature and human experience, making an entire career out of the overt expression he gave to personal suffering in some of the most poignant music ever written. An Old Familiar Air Much the same can be said of Michel Block, who is not only one of the great pianists of the 20th century (in spite of the inexplicable snub by the Philips "Great Pianists" series), but a gifted composer. That the lyrical abundance and affective precision of craft that give shape to his

IN PRAISE OF ADVENTURE: AN APPRECIATION
By John Bell Young Scriabin considered his Seventh Sonata, which he dubbed the "White Mass" ( a moniker intended as a measure of spiritual purity) as something more than a sketch. It was in fact a part of the conceptual fabric of the Mysterium and everything it symbolized. Along with the rest of his late piano music, in which he recycles motivic material from his other works, Scriabin planned to incorporate much of the sonata's thematic and rhythmic content into the body of the Mysterium. Indeed, he did just that in the sketches. The Seventh Sonata sonata is replete with the sonorous evocation of bells and droning cadences; together they suggest the mysterious intonations of the archimandrites reciting the liturgy at the ambo. You might say the Seventh Sonata is the Mysterium, if not exactly in miniature, then in essence. It was this sonata, which I play on Prisms, that Carlos Buhler broadcast into the stratosphere from atop Mt. Melungtse. SCRIABIN IN THE HIMALAYA

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Pianist John Bell Young Takes An Unusual Musical Journey: To The Himalayas With Hugh Downs, Tolstoi And Scriabin September 1999 Mount Melungtse in the Himalayas Prisms, his new recording on the Americus label, Young once again offers recording premieres of music by celebrated literary and media figures, including Hugh Downs. John Bell Young "I guess I just can’t resist the thrill of the hunt; I‘m a musical archivist at heart," says Young, who is also a prominent critic for several publications, including The American Record Guide Opera News and towerofbabel.com . "There’s a whole world of music out there that represents the contributions of extraordinary individuals. Some of these people are famous in other professions, but that does nothing to compromise their prismatic imaginations, which seem to operate on overtime". With a little help from their mutual friend, the late American folk singer Bill Crofut, Young got in touch with Hugh Downs, whose talents extend well beyond his fame as a television personality. Entrusting him with his scores, Downs gave Young the green light to perform his music in concert in the US and Russia. Eventually a collaboration developed in which Downs lectured and Young performed. "My musical output has been reprehensibly small as I got busier in broadcasting over the years," confesses Downs. "Of course it’s also overwhelmingly likely that I will never be able to do what Bach and Beethoven did!"
