Tian is recognized as one of the world's most exciting virtuoso pianists. Making his critically acclaimed North American debut at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, The New York Times wrote. "A formidable technique ... shining, crisp, energetic and colorfully illuminated".
Tian was born in China during the great famine that was part of the cultural revolution. His father, a singer of Western opera, and his mother, a dentist, were condemned as "intellectuals". His family was relegated to third class citizens and their house was raided by the Red Guard. Although a child prodigy, beginning his study of piano at five and his performance career at seven, Tian was denied admission to music school because of his family background.
Nevertheless, Tian kept playing and his parents kept supporting him. He made his professional debut at age thirteen at the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival, graduating from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He first came to international attention when he appeared with Vladmir Ashkenazy in a BBC film about the Russian virtuoso's historic visit to China. One of the first artists allowed to leave China after the Cultural Revolution, Tian continued his studies at the Juilliard School.
Tian's honors include prizes at the National Piano Competition of China, the Joanna Hodges Competition, the William Kappell International Piano Competition, the Young Keyboard Artist International Competition and the Van Cliburn Awards. Exciting audiences in Europe, North America and the Far East, Tian has appeared with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Singapore Symphony, the Philippines Philharmonic, Shanghai Symphony and the Central Philharmonic of China.
