I first came in contact with this CD at the radio station I volunteer at. I host a Friday night Jazz program, and just happened to pop this one in. Ever since, it has been a staple of my programming. Wonderful and versatile jazz clarinet I happened across Dr. Michael White and his Original Liberty Jazz Band at the Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans in early May, 2003. He is superb! From soulful strains on Summertime to lively numbers like Fidgety Feet to the bawdy Horn Man Blues (the one number with vocals, provided wonderfully by Thais Clark), this is a truly great album. Dr. White is one of the best jazz clarinetists I've heard, and when I played this CD for my parents (jazz lovers for 40 years), they loved it as well. Now I have to order it for them. You can't go wrong with this one. Jazz From the Soul of New Orleans Unfortunately, I had never heard of Dr. Michael White and his original Liberty Jazz Band until a recent trip to New Orleans. Jazz was not the type of music I listened to a lot. During our stay in New Orleans, we were invited to a church service at which Dr. White and his Band were the guest musicians. I don't think there are words to adequately describe what I felt, listening to the band and Dr. White's Clarinet. My husband and adult daughter expressed the same feelings.

This is perhaps the closest thing to a new release from Nicola Conte besides the numerous remixes that he's done and the Jet Sounds Revisited CD. For a bit of background, this cd was released on Schema label, which is home to Gerardo Frisina, Nicola Conte, Fragmentorchestra, S-Tone Inc., Soulstance and the Break and Bossa franchinse and countless other dj's and producers in Italy. From that alone, you can get sort of the style of this cd. It is very jazzy, but the singer, Rosalia De Souza, has worked with other Schema artists as well. Namely, Les Hommes and Quintetto X, ranging in everything from a sort of trippy feel to jazziness. The style of the cd is the Bossa you would expect from Schema label artists and Conte. Up-beat and catchy, sounds of the 60's and 70's with imposing touches of modern flair. This is definitely something you would hear in a happening lounge where you can hear the person beside you yet wonder what is playing overhead.

Titled New Orleans Piano Blues, the CD features two legendary pianists from the Crescent City. As always, the label pushes the megabyte limit and squeezes in 22 great tunes. The first set features "Cousin Joe" Pleasant (1907-1989) in a 1978 London concert. The second part offers eleven choice pieces by Alton Purnell (1911-1987) taken from a 1965 concert in Australia. Cousin Joe was born in Wallaceburg, about 30 miles from New Orleans and a cloud of mystery surrounds his name. Brian Wood explains in his liner notes, that the musician was sometimes referred to as Pleasant "Cousin Joe" Joseph, "Cousin Joe" Pleasant and alternatively "Smilin' Joe." He began his musical career with a ukulele and moved to piano later.Cousin Joe was also a well-regarded dancer. Yancey's playing was beautiful, sensitive and fluid and compared to his contemporaries was quite restrained resulting a different and unique texture to his performances though he could romp a boogie with the best of them as heard on The Fives/ Janie's Joys/ Yancey's Getaway and other selections here. Although he started playing piano in 1915 he didn't make his first recordings until May, 1939 when he recorded 17 sides in one long session. There are 6 beautiful sides from a session in October, 1939 and this first disc ends with two tracks from February, 1940 where he accompanies undistinguished vocalist Faber Smith. He came from a musical family. He acquired the nickname "Lux" because as a child he would imitate the excessively polite comic strip characters Alphonse and Gaston, calling himself the Duke of Luxembourg. His father, a Pullman car porter, insisted he play the violin as a child. At age 16, when his father died, Lewis switched to the piano after hearing local boogie-woogie pianist Jimmy Yancey. Lewis was entirely self-taught on piano. He was a boyhood friend of Albert Ammons. Together they studied the music of Jimmy Yancey and other Chicago blues pianists. They also drove taxis together around 1924. In 1927, Lewis recorded his boogie "Honky-Tonk Train Blues," a driving boogie based on the sounds of the trains that rumbled past his boyhood home on South La Salle Street in Chicago as many as a hundred times a day. The record was released 18 months later in 1929, but attracted little attention. The recording company, Paramount, went out of business, and the record became almost impossible to obtain. Lewis did various things to survive at the time, the beginning of the Depression: he dug ditches for the Works Progress Administration and he returned to taxicab driving.

I, NO. 8 OCTOBER 31, 1939 TEN CENTS MUGGSY SPANIER SIGNS EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT WITH BLUEBIRD Decca Sides for Chicago Album not Likely Muggsy Spanier has signed a contract to record exclusively for Bluebird, it was learned this week end. The contract follows the success of the recent Spanier Bluebird discs. This contract will prevent Spanier from recording as planned for the Decca Album of Chicago style that George Avakian is assembling Muggsy's band is booked into Nick's for a month and then they may hit the vaudeville circuit for six months as part of a larger show. Changes in Muggsy's personnel, do not appear imminent although rumors to the contrary are circulating. The band is a success at the Greenwich Village spot and it seems unlikely that any changes are contemplated immediately. Correct personnel, as printed in last week's Jazz Information, is: Muggsy Spanier, cornet; Rod Cless, clarinet; George Brunies, Trombone; George Zack, piano; Bob Casey, bass; Russ Fisher, tenor;and Marty Greenberg, drums. THE SWING TIME STORY Swing Time records was originally known as Down Beat, and was formed in Los Angeles in 1947 by Jack Lauderdale a Black record company entrepreneur originally from San Angelo,Texas.
