http://www.blueflamecafe.com/ Yancey, Jimmy A masterful pianist of the Harlem Renaissance. Born in 1918, Yancey became part of the Chicago boogie-woogie era and excelled in the piano. Yancey came from a musical background and learned how to play the piano from his brother, Alonzo. His father also was an entertainer, so music influenced Yancey’s life from the very beginning. When Yancey was a child, his father would tour and Jimmy would join him to tap dance and sing. Yancey travelled all over the world to give family performances and by the time he was 16 years old, he had already travelled around America and Europe and even entertained royalty at Buckingham Palace in London.
Even though Jimmy Yancey was extremely talented, he also followed another passion: baseball. He worked as a grounds man in Chicago at Comisky Park, where the Chicago White Sox continue to play today. He worked at Comisky Park for twenty- five years and there are even rumors that Yancey went semi- pro. However, during this time, Jimmy kept music in his life and performed on the house- rent party circuit, an extremely important part of Chicago music. When Jimmy was twenty-one years old, he began to record his boogie- woogie style which he pioneered two decades before. He had been playing the boogie- woogie style for his entire life and twenty years later, the style was a hit. His style is described as "often included stuttering, Latin-inspired bass riffs and restrained tempos"

Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1 (1939-1940) > Customer Review #1: An okay disc by a very good amateur.

Okay. Yancey was a grounds keeper at Cominsky Park. He played piano for funhe was an amateur, as differentiated from the professional who makes his living at music. That said, Yancey was pretty darn good; however, not nearly as good as Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Pete Johnson, Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson, Erroll Garner, et alii. Moreover, many of the tracks on this disc sound suspiciously alikewith only the titles changed: Yancey was basically a one trick pony. Still, this disc is worth having at the lower price.

It is characterized by a regular bass figure in the left hand ( basso ostinato ) and trills and decorations from the right hand. It is not strictly a solo piano style, but is also used to accompany singers and as a solo part in bands and small combos. It is sometimes called eight to the bar , but much of it is actually in common (4:4) time.

NEW BLUES FOR PIANO - A PROJECT IN PROGRESS BY MARCEL WORMS Marcel Worms is a Dutch pianist, classically trained but also with a strong interest in jazz. In 1996 year he asked nine well-known Dutch composers to write him a Blues. He was curious to know what the Blues, one of the roots of jazz music and still in important point of departure and point of reference for many jazzmusicians, meant for the contemporary composer either with a classical background or classically educated. He premiered these Blues in January 1997 in Amsterdam (as well as a Blues written for him by Michael Finnissy) in the BIMHUIS, Amsterdams foremost jazzstage. At the end of 1997 again 12 new Dutch and foreign Blues were ready and were premiered at the Icebreaker, Centre for Contemporary Music in Amsterdam and the third series had its first performance again at the BIMHUIS in November 1998. In 2000 new series of Blues have been premiered at the 'Beurs van Berlage' in Amsterdam and at the BIMHUIS again. Since then many other premieres took place.
Marcel Worms has laid contacts with composers in the countries where he will give or have allready given recitals recently. This has resulted in about 140 new compositions until now originating from over 35 different countries e.g. many European countries, Argentina, Brazil, China, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, South-Africa, South-America, the Ukraine and the USA. The repertory is still growing.

public to Axel Zwingenberger, a young Blues and Boogie Woogie pianist from Germany Hisfavourite pianists are Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson and jimmy yancey.
http://www.boogiewoogie.com/TEST/ARTIST/BERTRAND/jpbmaster.htm
Jean-Pierre BERTRAND was born August 22, 1955 in Saint Germain en Laye (FRANCE). His parents are music-lovers with a pronounced taste for classical music and opera. Student of the Academy of Music in the class of classical piano from the age of 7 to 14, he won the first award at a music contest in 1968. It was not enough however to make him forget the intense emotion he felt once after listening to a Memphis Slim record in a music store. After studying Chopin, Mozart and Bach, he moved on to learn jazz piano. Truly fascinated by the rhythm and the atmosphere of Boogie Woogie tunes, he began to explore the works of all the piano players for several years including artists like Sammy Price, Lloyd Glenn, Montana Taylor, Jay McShann, Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons, Jimmy Yancey... among many others. In 1977 he met Jean-Paul Amouroux, one of the greatest French Boogie Woogie piano players, who strengthened his convictions. He committed himself to work hard, with method, listening and listening again to the Boogie Woogie masters, to learn by ear the ingredients of their styles and to make them his own. From this time, his single purpose was to play in public. He began with small gigs in piano bars at week ends... He sometimes replaced one missing pianist.

Shows: Big Band Sounds The Brian Lehrer Show Dish Evening Music with David Garland ... NPR Theme Songs Big Band Sounds "Cherokee," by the Charlie Barnet Orchestra Composer: Ray Noble Date of Composition: 1939 Label: Bluebird www.dannystiles.com "Sultan of Swing" Danny Stiles has been using the Charlie Barnet Orchestra’s ''Cherokee'' since he launched his venerable and long-running show Big Band Sounds in December 1969 on the now-defunct radio station WEVD. This 1939 classic was also the signature tune of the Barnet Orchestra and it helped catapult the band to the front ranks of the swing era. About the Charlie Barnet Orchestra Saxophonist and band leader Charlie Barnet was among the most influential and popular musicians of the 1930s and 40s. Like Benny Goodman, he is credited for hiring many black singers and musicians as early as 1937, a time when other bands were segregated. His use of black performers kept his orchestra out of several hotels and ballrooms and was also likely the reason why he was never selected for any big commercial radio series. His hard-swinging arrangements were influenced by Duke Ellington, and because his arrangers were so well chosen and the music so well played, many of Barnet’s tracks retain a notable originality to this day.
