THE COMMUNITY OF BEAZER
by Elva Beazer "Chief Mountain Country" pages 56-59 The first known white man to live here was William Lee, a fur trapper who came here about 1867 from Fort Benton, Montana. He built trapper's cabins on land owned today by Charles W. Ivins. It was for him that Lee Creek was named. Next came W. S. Shirley from Oregon where he was known as the "Cattle King of Oregon". He started a cattle ranch on section 11, and branded his cattle with a big "44". For years the ranch was called the "44 Ranch" by the early pioneers. When he left he sold out to the Cochrane Ranch Co. who operated the ranch for several years. When they left, the house was sold to George E. Peterson who moved it to his homestead where it is still standing (1977), and has the distinction of being the first house built in Beazer. Mark E. Beazer from Kaysville, Utah, was the first permanent homesteader, arriving in Cardston with his wife and four children by "prairie schooner", June 7, 1890 after seven weeks of travel. The next two settlers were Jasper Head and Samuel Buck. These three families had the country to themselves until 1899 and 1900 when over sixty land-hungry homesteaders swarmed in and took up all the remaining homesteads.

A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS - AND THEN SOME
New York

"Make love and do battle!" the Russian composer Alexander Scriabin is reported to have said. Much the same can be said about the quotidian philosophy of John Bell Young, a Scriabin devotee who has made a career out of challenging the status quo and getting away with it. A pianist and writer whose eclectic concert career has taken him from Moscow to Mazatlan, and from Paris to El Paso, exults gleefully over a certain lack of strategy that has made him something of a cause celebre in recent years, a kind of new age middle-aged bad boy of classical music.
"Who needs fame?" says Mr. Young, peering uneasily over the lower Manhattan from atop Tribeca's American Thread Building in New York, where he doesn't live, but maintained an office in the 1980s. "Look what it did for Christ…" Indeed, beyond the usual 15 minutes, the ever elusive quarry of celebrity has played no part in his unusal life. "I admit;, he protests suddenly. " I'm fascinated by it, but to presume that fame is a prerequisite for harvesting the extraordinary riches that life has to offer is nonsense. Nor does it have anything to do with money…who says it's not possible to create your own reality?"
John Bell Young should know.

Merwin '48 applied a lifelong habit to a lifelong passion in his recent translation of Dante Alighieri's Purgatorio (Knopf, 2000). As a young man, Merwin befriended the poet Ezra Pound, who suggested he read and translate European medieval poetry. Merwin first tackled some Spanish ballads, only to be tackled by them. "I worked for a couple of years getting nowhere," says Merwin, a poet and translator by trade who majored in English at Princeton. Merwin finally did publish a selection of Spanish ballads in 1961 and followed up with translations of works by writers as diverse as Euripides and Pablo Neruda. But Merwin's reputation rests on his own poetry, for which he won the 1971 Pulitzer Prize. In 1998, he wrote a narrative poem on Hawaii and has taken on ecological causes.

HICKORY GROVE CHURCH STEEPED IN HISTORY , Lillye Younger From Lillye Younger, People of Action (Decatur County Printers, 1983). Special thanks to Constance Collett and the estate of Lillye Younger for permission to make this web page. Nestled among the giant Hickory shade trees, four miles west of Trenton, stands a lofty landmark, that has deep roots in the County's history. It's almost 119 years old. Hickory Grove Baptist Church, so akin to pioneer churches and school combinations, was "Constituted" in the Jetton School House the fourth Sunday in October 1863. In November 1863, it was named Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Despite the fact that the Civil War was in full swing, the need was seen for a "New Testament Church." The religious pioneers pushed ahead, not knowing whether the building might be destroyed by the enemies, as was homes during these battling days. Matthew Hillsman was selected to serve as Moderator when the church was established, later became pastor, according to the church's history. Those who adopted a declaration of faith and church covenant were listed thus, Mark Clay, Miss Lizzie Harwood, Mrs. Mary M. Harwood, Miss Lavania Hillsman, Benjamin Lyle, Mary Ivie, Daniel E. Jetton, Isaac Jetton, J. W. Jetton, Sr., Miss Nancy Jetton, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Moore, George W. Moore, Mrs. Lennington Moore, Dr. and Mrs. W. H. Wilson, Misa Emma Wright. and Mrs. Violet Wright. This frame building became inadequate and in the late 1920s the present brick structure was built to replace it. At this time Hickory Grove School stood on the grounds near by and during the erection of this building school children played on the church ground at recess and lunch period.
