William Wolfram Pianist American pianist William Wolfram has gained recognition as an artist who combines powerful Romantic instincts with a truly formidable command of the keyboard. A former Silver Medallist at both the William Kapell and Naumburg competitions. as well as Bronze Medallist at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, Mr. Wolfram has drawn plaudits from critics both here and abroad for his musical integrity and compelling pianism. In the words of The New York Times, “Wolfram’s technique is flabbergasting; fiendishly difficult octave passages were as child’s play, and his strength is tempered by an easy poetry.” In November 1999, Mr. Wolfram was lauded by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel for his performance of Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra: Wolfram navigated the concerto with the tremendous technical agility required by Liszt's piano music. But his technical facility paled in comparison to the gripping interpretation he gave the piece. The quick, almost schizophrenic shifts of mood and texture of this single-movement piece are a tough feat to pull off. Wolfram caught the attention and imagination of his audience in the piece's first bars, and kept them to the end with a commanding performance. Moving between the contrasting sections of the piece, Wolfram did not just change dynamics, articulations and tone color, he changed character. It was that sense of drama, conveyed musically that made his performance thoroughly fascinating to hear.

Pianist Wolfram finds career finally soaring at age 47
William Randall Beard, Special to the Star Tribune July 18, 2003 At 47, pianist William Wolfram's career is late-blooming, but he is going nowhere but up. He's performing all five Beethoven piano concertos a major accomplishment this week as part of Minnesota Orchestra's Sommerfest, for which he also is playing two chamber music programs. At 6-feet-4, with the muscular build and high energy of an athlete, he seems up to the task. Wolfram has been a fixture at Sommerfest since 1995. Last season, he reprised the monumental Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1, which he had done at Sommerfest two years earlier. He enjoys making Minneapolis a frequent stop. "I've always had fun here," he said. "The orchestra is wonderful, and I can hear well on the stage." Wolfram is a Sommerfest institution and not just in Orchestra Hall. He has made a name for himself around the Minnesota Orchestra offices. According to Bob Neu, vice president and general manager, he knows everyone in the building. "He's not a diva," Neu said. "Bill is wildly interested in politics, with extremely Democrat-liberal views, and he loves sports. He's never at a loss for conversation."

ItemWorld: All on the wrist
July 18, 2003 Pianist William Wolfram 's hands were cascading almost too rapidly across the Steinway keyboard to notice the odd green tape around his left wrist during his performance of Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto last Saturday. But Wolfram, conductor Marin Alsop and the Minnesota Orchestra were backed by a huge video screen showing them in rock-star closeup. Turns out the bracelet was Wolfram's temporary ID to get into the nearby "Y" to work out. "It started innocently," he said. "I'm absent-minded. I tried to pull it off and couldn't." He got so much attention that he has decided to wear a different color "Y" tag every night during his Sommerfest stay. "I'm telling everybody it's for electroshock treatment," he said. (J.H.)

EMI CLASSICS 57563 (F) (DDD) TT: 63:56 Chandos' Respighi disk is a winner in every way. The BBC Philharmonic plays brilliantly under Gianandrea Noseda, who a year ago was appointed Principal Conductor. He brings out all of the verve of Respighi's delightful magic toyshop ballet which was written for Diaghilev and premiered in 1919 with Massine as one of the two can-can dancers. Equally intriguing is another ballet, the 25-minute La pentola magica (The Magic Pot), first performed in 1920. Respighi wrote this "for fun" and it sounds like it. He took from several other Russian composers including Grechaninov, Arensky and Anton Rubinstein, the latter represented by the exciting "Dance of the Tartar Archers." track 14 on the CD. Respighi had a close relationship with Arturo Toscanini who premiered a number of his works including the composer's full-scale transcription of Bach's Prelude and Fugue in D, P. 158 which he commissioned and premiered in New York in 1930. A large orchestra is required replete with blazing brass (but, surprisingly, no organ), a robust conclusion to this superbly-recorded CD.
