Rebecca Penneys Recital Review - 2002 Pianist’s interpretive flair adds clarity, depth Concert Review Pianist Rebecca Penneys’ Sunday afternoon recital at Kilbourn Hall revealed an artist of striking originality. An Eastman School of Music professor, Penneys is a pianist of prodigious talent: She possesses a daredevil technique and the sort of charismatic stage presence that demands attention. Yet on Sunday it was her interpretive gift that most captivated the listener. At a time when so many pianists seem content to play the thrice-familiar works of the repertoire in much the thrice-familiar way, Penneys gave performances that were revelatory. Indeed, in her hands, the great works of Chopin, Liszt, Grieg, Debussy, Mozart and Gershwin-Wild that made up her program sounded novel, as if they were just composed yesterday. Her performance of Mozart’s Sonata in A Major, K. 331 unfolded with the freedom of an improvisation. Certainly, Penneys does not view a Mozart score as a kind of inviolable blueprint that must be reproduced exactly the same way every time, like a photocopy. In fact, one suspects that even Penneys didn’t know exactly how the Mozart would go until she sat down to play it, since she was obviously re-creating the music on the spot.

Already recognized for his deeply musical interpretations and masterful technique, he was the First Prize winner at the 2001 Arthur Rubinstein Piano Competition in Tel Aviv and was chosen to receive a 2002 Gilmore Young Artist Award, an honor given to young pianists who have demonstrated significant potential to develop outstanding performing careers as concert artists. During his years at Berklee, he continued to practice the classical piano repertoire and also attended the Boston University summer program at Tanglewood in 1995 and 1996. It was following his second summer at Tanglewood that he decided that classical music would be his main focus. He moved to New York City to attend the Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Solomon Mikowsky and earned both his Bachelor and Masters of Music degrees by the age of 20. Mr. Gerstein continued his studies in Madrid with the famed piano pedagogue Dmitri Bashkirov, with whom he still coaches on a regular basis. He is also one of only six pianists to have been selected to study in 2003 and 2004 at the prestigious Lake Como Piano Academy in Italy. Kirill Gerstein made his major orchestral debut in September 2000 with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra and David Zinman and was immediately reengaged for the following season. When sound is recorded using analog methods, arbitrary amplitudes or frequencies can be stored. For example, sound waves will cause a diamond needle traveling on a blank vinyl record to vibrate and cut a continuous groove. By contrast, a digital recording takes a series of rapid snapshots. The result is discrete in both amplitude and time, causing loss of data. In theory, analog should allow for the most realistic capture of sound. Earl Wild on the Net One of the first musicians to take advantage of Internet audio was pianist Earl Wild. On March 7 he broadcast a performance that was billed as the first solo piano recital over the web. Wild, a concert veteran, also holds the distinction of being the first live pianist on television in 1939. The recital was given in Carnegie Music Hall, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was broadcast live on WQED-FM in the local area. The program included works by Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, and Medtner. WQED broadcasts over the Internet using RealAudio, so any user who downloaded the free player could listen in. The setup in the concert hall appeared perfectly standard for radio broadcasts, with the usual microphones, but a live feed was also sent to the computer server. The La Quinta pianist often spends Saturdays wending his way through all 17 sonatas, a feat he has clocked at four hours and eight minutes. On April 27 at the Springs Theater of the Palm Springs Convention Center, McEvilly invites the public to attend a concert that might make its way into the Guiness Book of World Records. Beginning at 1 p.m., with two 20-minutes intermissions, he will perform the entire canon. According to McEvilly, it will make the first time any pianist has ever done so, not in London, Vienna, New York, nor in any other world music capital, but here in Palm Springs “It is so extraordinary,” explains the former music professor who holds a doctorate in music from the University of Southern California. “I don’t think any other pianist even thought of doing this. For Mozart lovers, it is one chance in the lifetime to hear them all performed without (sheet music).”
