44. Levtron - News And Views - Musician/Producer Ron Levy & His Wild Kingdom - Hammo
Safari To New Orleans on Black Top; 1985 – 1st wild Kingdom album on 19761980-pianist for Rhythm Rockers (Johnny Nicholas, Ronnie earl, Sarah Brown
http://www.levtron.com/whoslev.html
Introduction In an ambitious career spanning as far back as 1966, Ron Levy Levy is considered to be the ultimate blues and jazz keyboard player, but most just consider him an icon of the Hammond B-3 organ. Albert King saw enough in a very young Ron Levy to become his legal guardian back in 1968. He then took Ron out on the road for some much apreciated schoolin' until another "King" took notice. BB King hired Ron to tour and record with him for the next 7 years , releasing such classics as Live at Cook County Jail , and Lucille Talks Back . Whether as an organist, pianist, writer, arranger, record label founder, nine time Grammy nominee or producer of over 250 recording projects, Ron Levy has been a creative force in American music and the best has yet to come. Ron Levy's touring band, The Wild Kingdom , introduces the vintage sounds of a B-3 organ trio with the twist of a new soulfunk vibe that is proving to be irresistible. Everyone from college students to traditional blues and jazz fans are testifying to the raw power of a Levy induced Wild Kingdom jam session. A band that is capable of "blend[ing] jazz, blues, hip-hop and even gospel music in ways that blow apart the stylistic boxes imposed upon music in America today" Ken Franckling (United Press Int'l). Their seminal grooves can be heard at any of their 200+ tour dates a year all across the country and have been captured on three highly acclaimed CDs, including

Earl Wild is truly "the last of the great Romantic pianists." This eminent musician is considered internationally as one of the last in a long line of great virtuoso pianist/composers. Often heralded as "a super virtuoso" and "one of the 20th century's greatest pianists," Earl Wild has been a major legendary figure performing throughout the world for seven decades. Major recognition is something Mr. Wild has received numerous times in his long career. He has been featured in TIME magazine twice, both times with a full-page article with color photo. The last inclusion was on December 11, 2000 on the occasion of his 85th birthday. While still a teenager, Mr. Wild had already composed many piano transcriptions as well as arrangements for chamber orchestra that were often performed on many local radio stations. He was invited at a very early age to perform on KDKA in Pittsburgh, which happened to be the first radio station in the United States. He made such an impression that he began to work for the station on a regular basis. Mr. Wild was still in his early teens when began playing piano and celeste in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Otto Klemperer. With his immense hands, and absolute pitch, his graceful stage presence, and his uncanny facility as a sight-reader as well as an improviser, Earl Wild was well equipped for his lifelong career in music.

Our live chat interview in the CultureFinder chat room, on Sunday, March 1st at 9:00 PM (ET), was with pianist Earl Wild. Earl Wild is a pianist in the grand Romantic tradition. His career, so distinguished and long, has thrived for more than 70 years. Born in Pittsburgh in 1915, Earl Wild's technical accomplishments are often likened to those of Franz Liszt. Born with absolute pitch, Mr. Wild started playing the piano at age three. Having studied with great pianists such as Egon Petri, his lineage can be traced back to Scharwenka, Busoni, Ravel, d'Albert and Liszt himself. - CultureEla: Welcome, Mr. Wild! Thank you for being here on CultureFinder. Earl Wild: Hi! I'm ready for your questions :::Smile::: JSR8220: Hi Earl, how long do you practice a day? Earl Wild: Depends on my schedule. Chaconne: Mr. Wild, one of the transcendent musical experiences of my life was hearing you play the Liszt transcription of Beethoven's First Symphony the Samuel Barber Sonata , the Stravinsky Sonata Emperor Concerto with the Sarasota Orchestra and then a few weeks later I go to Holland where I have 8 performances and master classes. I am appearing with the Rotterdam symphony there. Chaconne: Mr. Wild, do you play Busoni's

”…[”Remembrances”] is an absolutely fabulous recording by one of the baddest lead trumpeters in New York history… Faddis’ performances on this release…will astound you… The name ”Faddis” should no longer be just a synonym for ”stratosphere.” These fabulous arrangements give way to some of the most tasteful, melodic trumpet playing ever heard on record.” -Jim Hurley, Test O Spin/Jazz Trumpet Journal, Bassett, CA Jazz trumpeter Jon Faddis takes a break from his duties as Music Director of the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band to record a satiny, swinging album that celebrates the old and the new. Chesky Records proudly presents Remembrances, a record showcasing the multi-faceted Mr. Faddis with support from a hand-picked fourteen-piece jazz orchestra.
Fans familiar with Mr. Faddis’ storming, take-no-prisoners style will find Remembrances a revelation. Leading with Duke Ellington’s timeless ”Sophisticated Lady,” Mr. Faddis plays pretty for the people, displaying a confidence that results from his virtuosity upon the instrument he has played since the tender age of eight and through his tenure with jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie. Conductor Carlos Franzetti has arranged the ten selections with emphasis on the saxes and winds, resulting in a lush, glowing sound recalling the urbanity of Count Basie’s glory days. With featured players like David Hazeltine on piano and Portraits Of Cuba Grammy-winner Paquito D’Rivera, Jon Faddis and Co. swing and strut through a dealer’s choice of time-honored jazz, including compositions by John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Dave and Iola Brubeck.

John McArthur
Pianist Dr. John McArthur, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies, began his studies in piano at age eight in the United States. His early studies were with the late Belgian pianist, Suzanne Shader, a student of Dr. Clarence Adler and Eduard van Remoortel, followed by studies with Ernest Ulmer, Joseph Villa, Dalmo Carra and Earl Wild while attending New York University and the Manhattan School of Music. It was during his tenure at the Manhattan School of Music as Teaching Fellow that he earned his doctorate in performance under the instruction of the eminent American Virtuoso, Earl Wild.
John McArthur was invited by the State Department of the United States to serve as the Cultural Ambassador of the United States to Indonesia . During his position as Ambassador to Indonesia, Dr. McArthur accepted an invitation from the Vice Chancellor for Education of Sichuan Province, to perform at the Sichuan College of Education in the People’s Republic of China in June, 1995. His highly communicative playing, engaging programs and appeal with audiences have led him to be the pianist of choice in Inaugural Recitals for new Baldwin concert grand pianos at the Cultural Arts Center Performing Arts Series, New York, and the Morris L. Brown Performing Art Series, Georgia, also leading to his inclusion in the 1989 and 1991 publication of American Keyboard Artists. McArthur has also appeared as guest artist at the Command Performance Series, Stony Brook, New York; the Brambltye Estate Performing Arts Series, New York; Teatro Bellas Artes, Venezuela, Carnegie Recital Hall and Carnegie Hall. With the death in late 1995 of Shura Cherkassky, Earl Wild now stands alone as the last representative of the larger-than-life Romantic keyboard heroes. Born in Pittsburgh in 1915, Wild made his first record in 1934 and is still recording, although, considering his stature, a disappointingly small proportion of those recordings are currently in print. Wild has tended to specialise to a certain extent in "big" works, virtuoso vehicles often dismissed as shallow and flashy - although not in his hands - which may be a part of the reason for his poor standing in the current catalogue. It does seem odd, though, given today's apparent fascination for the more obscure repertoire - there at least two companies issuing discs under titles such as "The Romantic Piano Concerto" - that RCA, for whom Wild made those first discs over six decades ago, have not seen fit to reissue these late 1960s recordings themselves, but have instead licensed them to Elan, a small company hitherto unknown to me. Still, RCA's loss is Elan's (and our) gain.
