Music Review: Lerner excels at Frick Thursday, July 17, 2003 By Eric Haines Mezzo-soprano Mimi Lerner's vocal artistry has gained her fame around the world and an adoring fan club in Pittsburgh. She exhibited that artistry at the Frick Art Museum auditorium Tuesday evening in a recital of American art songs complementing the Frick's two current exhibits of American daguerreotypes. The 22 songs on the program included unattributed songs of the Old West, Stephen Foster tunes, songs of Ives, Barber and Copland and works by contemporary composers William Bolcom and Jack Hegge. It's no secret that Lerner's voice has lost some of its honey-smooth texture. But her rock-solid technique has kept the voice strong and controlled throughout its wide range. The trademark of a Lerner recital is a broad spectrum of emotion and subtext. She imbued expression into every song, even the most innocuous Foster tunes. Four songs by Copland highlighted the concert. Lerner conveyed the melancholy of "Long Time Ago" and the parental tenderness of "Little Horses." Two settings of Dickinson poems, "Night, the Gentlest Mother" and "When They Come Back," were mesmerizing. An interesting programming twist was the inclusion of two settings of "At the River" by Ives and Copland. Lerner captured the majesty of the Copland and the uncertainty of the Ives.

Topping the LSO's musical agenda is MasterWorks, a dazzling series of six classical programs presented in twelve performances. Thrill to the fire, romance and color of masters ranging from Wagner, Mozart and Bernstein to Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Bartok. These are but a few of those whose works will be brought to passionate life in '95-96 by our own Maestro Albert-George Schram through the orchestral brilliance of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. Add to this dynamic mixture the superb talents of guest artists such as violinist Liva Sohn....guitarist Richard Cobo... The Joy of Music Guest Artist Dr. William Westney at Mt. A
Are you a perfectionist? Are you a music lover? Are you an aspiring teacher, musician, actor, radio broadcaster, public speaker...? Are you ready for a surprise?
From February 10-12, Mount Allison University's Department of Music will welcome the noted and idiosyncratic pianist, teacher, lecturer and clinician Dr. William Westney as guest artist. Westney's innovative perspective on the art of performance should be of interest to a wide cross section of Mt. A students and faculty.
Westney will perform a solo recital at 8:00 pm on Thursday night in Brunton Auditorium, present a lecture entitled "The Perils of Perfectionism" at 8:00 pm the following night, and conduct an Un-Master Class session with students in Mt. A's Music programme on Saturday from 9:30-12:30 am in the Band Room. The public is cordially invited to these events, and there is no admission charge.
Students and faculty of the Music Department are excited about Westney's visit. Music students Tracy Anderson, Judith Millar, Jennifer Cosman, and Kim Denis, as well as the Saxville Quartet, will be some of the musical dramatic guinea pigs. Millennial deep listener and piano professor Janet Hammock strongly encourages people from disciplines other than music to attend the event.
Westney, the originator of the popular and intriguing Un-Master Class workshop, which has been held at large conferences such as Chamber Music America and the National Flute Association, and also such prominent schools such as Julliard, Peabody Conservatory, the Aspen School of Music, the Cleveland Institute, and conservatories in Europe and Asia, works with an unusual approach to teaching. In a recent feature article, the New York Times described the unique Un-Master Class as "fascinating".

THE BASSOON AT LUBBOCK, 1981
David DeBolt
On Tuesday of the 1981 IDRS Conference week I was pleasantly surprised to find that the bassoon requirements of the Kansas City Philharmonic repertoire for the week would allow me freedom to be in Lubbock for most of the events. The enjoyment and valuable information gained there more than counterbalanced my second surprise, that of finding myself appointed bassoon reviewer just as I was preparing to leave. The atmosphere of the convention was at once Texan, International and adventurous. A warm West-Texas welcome was extended not only by Richard Meek and staff, our excellent hosts, but also by the delicious food and comfortable rooms, the gracious townspeople who were guides at the ranch museum, and the community orchestra players whose efforts made possible a concerto concert. Texas-sized bassoon and double-reed ensembles appeared several times, and programming throughout the convention emphasized pieces for two or more double reed instruments. Quartets and larger groups made a striking effect, but not without some reminders of the pitch and balance problems inherent in such undertakings. The most notable Texas-sized exception was the group of 6 oboes, 6 English-horns, 6 bassoons, contra-bassoon, and sometimes 2 flutes performing "Ye Banks and Braes O' Bonnie Doon'; The Immovable Do
