Etude: floating and then not (piano solo)
The composer writes: "Etude grew out of a conversation I had with a colleague. We were contemplating what it is about some pieces of music that makes them feel like they are floating on air, and what it is about some other pieces that makes them seem to be so close to the earth. Although there are many other elements at work, one important element seemed to be the nature of the rhythmic resolution. It is the treatment of rhythm that I chose to explore in this piece. The form is ABA, where each A section is mostly floating and the B section is mostly not."
Story Closet-divertimento for piano
The piece was written in 1986 in five movements: Opening Music, Tennis Racket/Unstrung, Wool Blazer/Circa 1978, Useless Gift, Costume Jewelry

James Giles (piano), Wigmore Hall, 16th April 2003 The young American pianist James Giles, a professor at Northwestern
University, gave one of the most sheerly inspired piano recitals I can
remember hearing for sometime. Inspired partly for the programming, which
placed the familiar with the unfamiliar, and inspired partly by self-evident
artistry, it was the kind of recital which put the music at the service of
the composer and not the performer. For some, Mr. Giles's performance of Schubert's great D. 960 sonata might have compared less favorably with a recent one given at the Festival Hall by Evgeny Kissin. Yet Kissin's egomaniac, somnambulant performance, taken at a dangerously slow tempo, was a world away from the tempestuous, almost fiery approach which Mr. Giles took. Where Mr. Kissin had been obtrusive in his use of rubato, Mr. Giles used it to the minimum and the effect was to distil a parenthesis of death-hued ambivalence to the noble opening movement. Subtle shadings of pp and ppp playing, so poorly differentiated in Mr. Kissin's performance, were here radically drawn so when the appearance of the G-flat trill in the bass part of the piano awoke, like a slumbering giant, it did so with thunderous, almost calamitous, force.

Introduction
by Christopher Bamford It is a privilege to write a few words to introduce this pithy, far-reaching essay by Edward Reaugh Smith The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved focuses (with many fascinating asides) on the identity of the “beloved disciple”: the one “leaning on Jesus’ bosom, whom Jesus loved”—the one to whom Jesus “gave” His mother—not to mention the one who wrote the Fourth Gospel, the Apocalypse, and certain Letters that expound the Christian teaching of love more perfectly than any other human text. Ordinary Christians have always called this author “John,” which tradition has sometimes interpreted to mean “to whom is given” and which Smith tells us comes from a conflation of two Hebrew words “Yah” (or Yahweh) with “Anna,” meaning “grace.” In other words, John manifests and bears witness to God’s grace. Certainly no Christian texts have exerted a comparable initiatory influence. Indeed, whether or not it is justifiable to speak of a “Johannine” spiritual (esoteric) Church, in contrast to the Petrine or institutional (exoteric) Church, St. John has always stood for the heights of mystical theology: the deepest Christian initiation. His identity, therefore, is a matter of more than passing interest. This is one reason why, when asked by the New York Open Center and the Anthroposophical Society to contribute to a lecture series celebrating Christianity at the beginning of the new millennium, Ed Smith chose the theme of the identity of John: it would allow him to talk of Christian initiation in a new way, one whose time he felt had come. Another reason surely was that it allowed him to bring together a number of

A High Note
Festival provides a wealth of events for those who love classical music
By KEN WHITE
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Classical-music lovers may think they're in heaven as a lineup of guest and student artists perform more than a dozen concerts during the Las Vegas Music Festival, Tuesday through Aug. 16. The festival features a series of concerts to be held at various locations in the Las Vegas Valley. About 90 students, age 15 to 28, from high schools, colleges and graduate programs will be in the city for two weeks of orchestral sessions. They will rehearse, study privately with festival faculty members, attend seminars and master classes, and perform major works in concert. There also is a chamber music session with faculty and students working in solo master classes. Also, students will receive chamber music coaching and private lessons, and perform works in a concert setting. Top guest artists include Van Cliburn Competition silver medalist Yakov Kazmann; Doriot Antony Dwyer, flutist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra; violinist Charles Castleman of the Eastman School of Music; horn player Charles Kavalovsky, formerly with the Boston Symphony Orchestra; and Terry Everson, a trumpet player at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. "We're not always listening for perfection," Stelluto says. "What we're looking for is potential."
