    Volodos in Recital
    by
    Erik D. Dyar
[Editor’s note: Unable to attend this concert, I asked Erik Dyar to write a review for PENINSULA REVIEWS. Mr. Dyar, an architect by profession, is also an accomplished pianist who performed a recital in Carmel, California last year.] Hearing Arcadi Volodos in recital on Sunday night at Davies Hall in San Francisco convinced me that he is a pianist of whom legends are made. Mr. Volodos put on a display of incredible pianism and musicianship that had to be heard to be believed. The last time we had the opportunity to hear him live was in a Carmel Music Society recital in Carmel’s Sunset Center in November 2000, where much of his program was devoted to works by Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms. This turned out to be a disappointment after hearing his recordings of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin, where Volodos convinces us that he is one of the great interpreters of these two composers. Fortunately, on Sunday night, we had ample opportunity to observe his strengths as an artist and performer, since the first half was devoted exclusively to Rachmaninoff and Scriabin. At the beginning of the program, he created a hypnotic soundscape around Scriabin’s lush, ambiguous harmonies and intense textures. One way you know you are hearing a great artist is, if during a performance, you can’t imagine anyone playing the work better. This was certainly true here, and this conviction has remained with me. Volodos’ performance was so convincing that it made me hope he will record all of Scriabin’s important works for posterity, but most certainly the sonatas. One can never be sure when someone of Volodos’ gifts will come along and fit so appropriately with this composer’s music.

Volodos, the 28-year-old Russian virtuoso pianist who made a remarkable Carnegie Hall debut in 1998 and subsequently was featured on several extraordinary CDs, has been one of the most eagerly anticipated musical artists of the 2000-2001 season. Well, he finally arrived last night at Sunset Center in Carmel in a concert presented by the Carmel Music Society. Initially a disappointing event, it was redeemed at its conclusion by startling and brilliant playing, so dazzling that you have to hear it yourself to believe how stunning it really was.
The first two thirds of the concert was heavy going. Imagine yourself being invited to a private dinner given by a world-renowned pastry chef. On arriving you find you can't sample the pastries until you have consumed a boring, multi-course dinner that almost destroys your appetite for dessert. That was more or less what happened as Volodos presented us with a performance representing some very unfortunate program selections. The opening work, the Theme and Variations in D minor by Brahms, based on the lovely theme from his Sextet for two violins, two violas and two cellos, is a problem work since, unfortunately, the theme is more beautiful than the subsequent variations. On this occasion Volodos banged out the theme, emphasizing inner notes that were totally unimportant along the way, and totally failed to reveal its haunting beauty. He continued this harsh treatment in the variations that followed, until finally, in the fourth variation in D major, Volodos found his voice and quite unexpectedly, after the unpleasant banging, treated us to some soft lovely playing that showed quite another side of Volodos. It was a beautiful moment of lovely playing that was regrettably brief.

Volodos is a pianist who has already shown many virtues. He can play slowly, he can play very slowly, he can play extremely slowly. If that were not enough, he can play quietly, he can play very quietly, he can play extremely quietly. The previous reviewer mentions his other virtues. Those are also true. It is fortunate that Volodos brings his talents to Schuberts piano sonates. These interpretations are decent and a refreshing change from his hair-raising feats of prestidigitations. Kempfs interpretation of the same sonata is indeed Good. But it does not follow that another interpretation is therefore unnecessary.
I like to peel my oranges in a number of ways. I like my Schubert played by a variety of artists.

Plays Rachmaninoff-Con Piano 3/S > Customer Review #1: an unexciting attempt at the romantic style

With Gilels, Richter, and Horowitz dead, everyone is looking for a Russian virtuoso who plays with the same heroic "grand gesture" as these old titans. The amazon review of Volodos, which declared him a "true virtuoso" of our time, piqued my interest in this CD. The liner notes of this CD also paint Volodos as the latest virtuoso since Horowitz. When I listened to this CD, I was horribly disappointed. Like Evgeny Kissin, Volodos offers merely a prettified, sterile version of the romantic style, full of gorgeous colors but lacking any of the volcanic excitement that the Russian pianists used to have. This is the first time that Rachmaninoffs 3rd concerto bored me to death. The Preludes arent any better. For Rachmaninoffs 3rd concerto I recommend William Kapell, one of the most inspired musicians who ever lived, and of course Horowitz.
