List of Russians
This is a list of people associated with Imperial Russia , the Soviet Union , and Russia of today. For a long time Russia was a multinational country, and many people of different nationalities contributed to its culture, to its glory, and to its sorrow. They may be Georgians Jews Poles Moors , Udege, Tatars Belarusians Germans ,... Sometimes we don't know their exact ancestry. Sometimes their formal nationality was written down at random or for political or other reasons. They may have emigrated or immigrated , and thus may appear in other "Lists of...", but nevertheless their names are linked to the words "Russia", "Russian", whether with pride, with shame, or with pain.

When he was 8 years of age his father gave him bandoneon which he had bought at a pawn shop for 19 dollars. Bandoneon, a close relative of the accordion, became Piazzolla's first instrument. He preserved his love for it till the end of his life. Young Piazzolla revealed astonishing musical talent. He made his first record at the Radio Recording Studio in New Yourk when just 10 years of age. Two years later Pizzolla takes piano lessons from the Hungarian pianist, Bela Wilda, who was a student of Rachmaninov. It was Wilda who discovered Bach for him. In 1936 Piazzolla begins playing in orchestras with exclusive tango repertoire. The world of tango became his second grand discovery.

The University of Michigan and CREES preeminence in the study of Poland also continues. University of Michigan is one of the few institutions in the United States offering four levels of Polish language instruction. In March, CREES will offer a mini-course on rock music and the demise of communism, and the eminent Polish rock singer, Kora Jackowska, will present the Annual Copernicus Lecture. In addition, we have established the new Copernicus Fellowship for Incoming Graduate Students in Polish Studies beginning with applicants for the 2004-05 academic year. Research and teaching on Central Eurasia have been strengthened with support from our Title VI grant. Three new course, two on Central Asia and one on Islamic Movements in Comparative Perspective, as well as four related lectures, will be offered in Winter 2004, jointly sponsored by CREES and the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies (CMENAS). The CREES Brown Bag Series includes talks on Russian-Korean links, the Balkans and Greece in discourse over the "center of Europe," the aesthetics of national mobilization in Poland, politics in East Central Europe, and the dispute between Russia and Japan over the Kurile Islands.

The non-conformist art, called "The Other Art", or avant-garde, underground etc., was considered "unofficial" by both the public and the authorities. (In the beginning, the line between the official and unofficial manifestations of a particular painter were unclear. ) At the height of the "Thaw", the artform showed great spontaneity and almost naivety as painters tried to communicate both the public and the government.
At the time, it was unimaginable that art, which merely because it did not fit into the mould of Socialist Realism (founded on the traditions of 19th century Russian Academicism), could be perceived to be political opposition to the government. In fact, events such as the Picasso and Leger exhibitions at the Pushkin Museum and the early 20th century Russian avant-garde exhibition at the Maiakovski, seemed to have confirmed that a certain artistic freedom would be tolerated.
However, on December 1st, 1962 at the Cavaliers Room, Nikita Kruschev inaugurated an exhibition to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Painter's Union of Moscow. The exhibition included successful painters from the first half of the 20th century such as Sterenberg, Falk, Drevine, Petrov-Vodkine, Kousnestov, and for the first time, the works of certain young independent artists. The latter paintings, by Sobolev, Yankilevski, Joutovski, Neisvestny and a large section of work by painters from Belioutine's studio, were conspicuously located on the first floor. These independents' works greatly contrasted the traditional artist works.

65th birth anniversary of famous writer, playwright Alexander Vampilov
People say that "to become great, one should be unhappy". It often happens to talented people, for instance, to playwright Alexander Vampilov, who would have turned 65 on August 19th. He died at the age of 35 in August 1972.
Films and performances after his plays "Farewell in June", "Elder Son", "Duck Hunting", "Provincial Anecdotes", "Last Summer in Chulimsk" and "House, Overlooking the Field" became national classics. Best Russian actors performed in them. Best theatre and film directors stage them in Russia, Europe and all over the world.
A son of a repressed Buryat schoolmaster and a Russian teacher, he was called Alexander in honour of Pushkin, whose 100th death anniversary was celebrated in the year, when Vampilov was born. He came into literature after school, university and journalist work. He was long waiting for the popularity of his plays, which he had written by the age of 25. However, Moscow's creative intelligentsia didn't notice the young playwright, with the exception of some people who did their best to help him. For instance, famous film director Oleg Yefremov tried to promote Vampilov as a representative of ethnic minorities.
In 1966 Vampilov joined the Union of Writers and his "Farewell in July" was staged in Claipeda drama theatre /Lithuania/. "Elder Son" premiered in 1969. In 1971 it was on already in 28 theatres of the country and became the hit of the season. On August 17th, two days before his 35th birthday, Alexander Vampilov was killed in an accident on Lake Baikal (East Siberia). The playwright wrote in his note-book, "To win recognition, one has either to go away, or to die". He never wanted to leave Russia.
