Volkov misses nothing here in his brilliant enactment of the busy sonic shenanigans and darkly atmospheric writing. He captures the full measure of the mischief and mystery, the color and the surrealism..." (Cosmik Debris, January 1999)

The Paraphrases is a collaborative work that features 24 variations and a finale by Cui, Liadov and Rimsky-Korsakov, followed by a brief transition by Liszt and 15 short pieces by Borodin and the three mentioned above. The work is for two pianos, the second of which plays the same motive over and over throughout, while the first plays more substantive music. In the end, the work ends up as a failed attempt to create the sublime from the simple, because it falls victim to monotony long before its half-hour-plus duration is up. Too bad, because many individual pieces and variations are cleverly conceived and written. In sum, most selections on both discs are spendidly played and are presented in good sound. The notes by Volkov's pianist/musicologist wife, Svetlana, are most informative and very thorough. I wish all labels supplied such intelligent and copious commentary with their discs.

OLEG VOLKOV
Russian-born pianist Oleg Volkov came to the United States in the summer of 1990 to compete in the University of Maryland William Kapell International Piano Competition. Following his performance with the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center, Mr. Volkov emerged as a winner of one of the coveted Kapell lead prizes. Along with this notable award came remarkable praise, respect, and admiration from American critics and audiences alike. With offerings of a visiting professorship and U.S. concerts, Mr. Volkov returned to the states on Christmas Day of that same year. He made his recital debut soon after his arrival, performing on the piano of Vladimir Horowitz. The recital, held at the Center for the Arts, George Mason University, launched a nationwide tour of the Horowitz Steinway Grandand the American concert career of Mr. Volkov. Mr. Volkov was born in Rostov-on-Don in the south of Russia. He studied in the Russian music schools, graduating with highest honors. He began studying with Maestro Victor Merzhanov at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory in 1977. A distinguished student at the Conservatory, he completed his postgraduate degree (doctor of musical arts) in 1987, again receiving an honors diploma. Subsequently, Mr. Volkov was elected assistant professor at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory to work with Maestro Merzhanov. He held this position until leaving for the United States in late December 1990.

The Rachmaninoff Second had for decades been the second most popular piano concerto in the world's concert halls, the Tchaikovsky First, of course, being preeminent. In the last ten or fifteen years, this C Minor concerto's older sibling, the virtuosic and once-neglected Third, has at least caught up, maybe even surpassed it. The Second is a better-crafted, if less dramatic, work. It may well not feature the blood-and-thunder cadenzas or the extroverted grandiosity found in the Third, but neither does it suffer from the structural and textual problems that plague the later piece. And, like most great concertos, it can inspire several valid interpretive approaches. For the Beethoven disc I could almost write the word "ditto" and call it quits. Almost. But Volkov's artistry draws out a slightly different result in the G Major Sonata. The first movement is played in a somewhat relaxed and probing manner, where perhaps a bit more tension might heighten the musical yield. Brendel (Philips), for example, imparts more animation and urgency, and is preferable here. In the ensuing movements, however, Volkov's less driven way works quite well, delightfully revealing the Adagio as graceful, even playful, and the Rondo as a substantive, subtle conclusion to a great work. On the whole, the performance is certainly worthwhile for its clarity and many insights.
