Order Fixations from Sheetmusicplus FIXATIONS (1985), for piano, by Richard Wilson Listen to Movement I in Real Audio format. Blanca Uribe, pianist (Albany Troy 074).
Among the older meanings of fixation is: the process of reducing a volatile spirit or essence to a permanent bodily form, such as the conversion of mercury into a solid. This seemed to me an appropriate way to describe a composer's effort to give shape to musical ideas that are amorphous and fleeting in their incipient state. "Bird in Space" was inspired by certain Brancusi sculptures by that name. "Shadowings" and "Flashback" take their titles largely because of musical procedures employed: parallel motion in the former, a parenthetical structure in the latter. The set of three pieces is dedicated to Blanca Uribe, who gave the premiere on
January 28, 1986, in Skinner Hall, Vassar College.

A YEAR OF ADVENTURES ON THE HIGH KEYS FOR OBERLIN CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC STUDENTS AND GRADUATES M ARCH 6, 2003It has been a high-octane year for piano students and recent graduates of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Here is an overview of some recent awards and achievements garnered this past year. Piano Concerto No. 19 in F Major, K. 459. The Ann Arbor News noted: "Clarity, beautifully delineated phrases, and delicacy of touch were the hallmarks of [Han’s] Mozart playing." A piano performance major, Han studies with Oberlin Professor of Pianoforte Peter Takács. The competition was his first public performance since an accident in which he fractured his arm. Han credits his comeback to Takács: "Without his support I can hardly imagine how I would have survived the competition. He encouraged me. That’s the most important thing. He also taught me some relaxation and arm strength techniques that helped me overcome the physical difficulties." Han says that he will use these techniques for the rest of his life. Takács has similar admiration for his young pupil. "It’s such a pleasure to work with a student who is both talented and motivated," says Takács. "Mudi has had to work very hard to regain the time and mobility he lost due to his accident, so winning this competition is even more of an achievement. He also has become a very skilled Mozart player, which is not a very easy thing for a young performer to do."

Bard Center Evenings
Bard Center Evenings give trustees and friends of the College opportunities to meet distinguished experts during a series of thought-provoking panel discussions. These evenings are held at least three times a year and explore issues of intellectual, cultural, and social concern. Recent topics have included "The Promise, Practices of 'Alternative' or Complementary Medicine," "The Rise of the Image, the Fall of the Word," "Violent Behavior: Causes and Potential Remedies," "Grand Synthesis? The Rapprochement between Science and the Arts and Humanities," and "Foreign and Humanitarian Aid: Paradoxes and Perspectives."
The Bard Center Performance Series
The Bard Center brings to campus outstanding men and women in many fields-the humanities, the arts, science, business, media, government, and education-to present public lectures, readings, and performances.
Among the musicians who have performed recently at Bard are pianists Alan Gampel and Joan Tower, in a two-piano lecture-recital featuring Tower's Stepping Stones, as well as works by Ravel, Debussy, and Stravinsky-composers whose work has influenced Tower's own. Other performances have included the world premieres of works by Richard Teitelbaum and Benjamin Boretz by the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra; the Da Capo Chamber Players' presentation of Peter Maxwell Davies' chamber opera Le jongleur de Notre Dame; violinist Sanford Allen, cellist Robert Martin, and harpsichordist Edward Brewer on an all-Bach program; and an evening of jazz with the Thurman Barker Quintet, featuring Grammy-nominated Sam Rivers on tenor sax and guitarist James Emery.
