Cecil Taylor, piano
Friday, February 12
8:00 p.m.
Cecil Taylor 's name seems to evoke nature imagery from many critics; his playing has been said to resemble Niagara Falls, a volcano, a great river, thunderheads, a high wind, and a stampede. A brilliant improviser, composer and pianist, Taylor was voted the number one pianist in the DownBeat critics' poll for nine consecutive years. A giant figure in the jazz avant-garde, he shared with Ornette Coleman the charge of freeing jazz from the restraints of convention, creating a complex vocabulary that produces a rich tapestry of texture and rhythmic accent. "Metamorphosen is a marvel...intonation is flawless, ensemble is silky smooth; Yoo steers his colleagues with superior interpretive ideas."
The San Francisco Examiner "Bennett was altogether extraordinary. She has...an ability to shape a musical line through dynamics and rhythm that is at once instinctive and profound."
The Boston Globe The Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra Scott Yoo

She was also awarded the 1987 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 1989 Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Prize. Kurt Sanderling 90 th Birthday Concert : Mitsuoko Uchida (pf), Philharmonia Orchestra, Christoph von Dohnanyi, RFH, 28 th September 2002 (AR) HAYDN: Symphony No. 64 Tempora mutantur
MOZART: Piano Concerto No. 27, K595
BRAHMS: Symphony No. 2
Kurt Sanderling’s 90th Birthday Concert consisted of three essentially dark and dramatic works. Christoph Von Dohnanyi opened his programme with Haydn’s Symphony No. 64 Tempora mutantur Times change . Some scholars have suggested that this nickname is associated with the principle theme of the Finale but listening to Dohnanyi’s penetrating performance it seems more appropriate to the experience and elements of fragmented time in the Largo. It was in the Largo that the composer’s hybrid and inventive writing anticipates Bruckner’s dynamics with their infamous gaps - eternal blank spaces - between the notes.
Unfortunately many concertgoers missed this rarely performed symphony, arriving late after a bomb scare at Waterloo. It would also be refreshing if Dohnanyi could conduct a series of Haydn’s less well known symphonies with the Philharmonia rather than the customary Beethoven Symphony cycles.

Customer Reviews: Avg. Customer Rating: A new way to look at Spanish music from a true artist:
The Albeniz sonata (opens Disc One) sounds amazingly like Bach, yet nothing like Bach, in de Larrocha's hands. Somehow, she brings the meditative astringency of Bach to this Spanish music. No wild fandangos and flashy dancing, this is a very cerebral interpretation of a composer who perhaps would not be so well known if it weren't for de Larrocha's lifelong championing of Spanish composers. Joy of joy, she also includes the rarely-heard Cansons i Dansas of Federico Monpou, a composer who has a lot in... more info Fiery jewelry by the supreme Hispanic pianist.:

    When: 8 p.m. June 11
Where: Lobero Theatre, 33 E. Canon Perdido St.
    Cost: $30 to $44.50
Information: 884-8410 or www.cameratapacifica.org By Tom Jacobs NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER Barry Douglas has an intriguing approach to playing Beethoven: You don't want to make it sound too easy. The great composer's music "is awkward for the hands, " said the internationally acclaimed Irish pianist. "That has always been one of Beethoven's hallmarks. If it's difficult to get to a note or a chord, the struggle to get there becomes part of the characteristic of that particular phrase. If it was easy to play, it would sound a little too glib. " Beethoven, in other words, produced a marvelous melding of form and content. His music, which so often depicts emotional struggle, is a challenge to perform. The effort required becomes part of the sound, reinforcing the music's emotional content.
