Zwecker Uchida and CSO backers get most out of Mozart May 15, 2004 BY WYNNE DELACOMA Classical Music Critic Audiences for the Symphony Center Presents piano series were disappointed in January when an overscheduled Mitsuko Uchida canceled her solo recital. Uchida is one of the most insightful pianists on the scene today, but until relatively recently she rarely popped up on the local performance calendar. The Japanese-born pianist is making up for that January cancellation somewhat in concerts with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra this week. She was originally scheduled to play a Mozart piano concerto with conductor Charles Mackerras on a program that also included a suite from Janacek's "The Cunning Little Vixen'' and Dvorak's Symphony No. 7. When Mackerras canceled due to ill health, she agreed to conduct the CSO from the piano in two Mozart concertos, the A Major Concerto, K. 414, and the F Major Concerto, K. 459. The program also included a Mozart chamber piece, the well-known C Minor Serenade for Winds, K. 388, featuring eight CSO wind players. Mark Steinberg, violin Mitsuko Uchida, piano May 23 NOTES ON THE PROGRAM Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Born January 27, 1756, Salzburg Died December 5, 1791, Vienna Sonata for Piano and Violin in F Major, K.377 In June 1781 Mozart broke away from the two authority figures who had dominated his life to that point, Archbishop Colloredo and his father Leopold, and moved to Vienna. Having declared his independence, Mozart was under pressure to justify so bold a step, and he set out immediately to make a career as a free-lance musician in his adopted city. He gave concerts and took students, but he also recognized that there was a growing number of amateur musicians in Vienna who would gladly purchase and perform attractive new music. His first publication in Vienna was in fact composed directly for this market: during the summer of 1781 Mozart composed four new sonatas for violin and piano and published them that November (along with two sonatas composed earlier) as his Opus 2. The title page of that set read "Six Sonatas for the Harpsichord, or Pianoforte with the accompaniment of a Violin," a description that has caused confusion because it seems to imply that the violin is superfluous and might be omitted with no loss of musical value. It is true that Mozart was working within the old form of the accompanied sonata, and it is true that the piano part often dominates textures in these sonatas. Still, the violin part is so important - and the musical argument so dependent on it - that they must be regarded as true duo-sonatas. An early reviewer in Hamburg went directly to this issue in his notice: "...the violin accompaniment is so ingeniously combined with the clavier part that both instruments are constantly kept in equal prominence; so that these sonatas call for as skilled a violinist as a clavier player."

Philips Classics 456 245-2 T here are quite a few alternatives, too many perhaps, to consider when one is about to chose a recording of Schubert's two sets of impromptus. I have my self only heard five or six, and among these Mitsuko Uchida's monumental addition to the catalouge is by far the finest. Not even the accounts of great Schubertians like Clifford Curzon or Wilhelm Kempff can, in my opinon, compete with Uchida's 1997 recording on Philips. I n the opening bars of the c-minor impromptu (D.899 no.1) , Uchida raises ones expectations to the almost unreasonable, but nevertheless, not one note is left without the most careful and nuanced attention. This particular piece has been among my favorites in Schubert's pianouniverse since I first came across it, and I have never heard it better served either in the concerthall or on record. The second impromptu in E-flat must be among the most frustrating for a pianist to encounter, as it so often becomes monotonous and paradoxically enough static in its long wanderings. Although I feel that Uchida is more on familiar ground in the other impromptus, the E-flat is never stripped of its dynamic and elegant flow. However I think , in this particular case I might want to go with Curzon. T he wonderful B-flat impromptu (D.935 no.3) is another highlight on this disc. The variations over a theme are on one hand given attention on their individual characteristics, but never at the cost of the piece as a whole. There are more than certain traces of Richter's influence here, but nevertheless this is Schubert by way of Mitsuko Uchida.
