A pianist is a person who plays the piano
A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble , or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists
A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Sergei Rachmaninov Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin , and Robert Schumann were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play.
Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including jazz classical music , and all sorts of popular music

May 2004 Articles Lest We Forget BBC's The Changing World Creators at Carnegie: John Adams ... Broadcasts from the IU School of Music Lest We Forget
Sunday, May 30 at 8:00 p.m. World War II forced America to grow up quickly. Fresh-faced young men left home for the first time and witnessed events they would never forget. Join former senator and honored war veteran Max Cleland for Lest We Forget, an hour of personal memoirs told by World War II veterans-individuals who sacrificed their youth, lost their innocence and survived unimaginable hardships.
When pilot Lawrence Kubale Sr.'s glider went down in northern France, he landed in the middle of 1,500 German soldiers. The ground was littered with dead and wounded American paratroopers. "Some were in the trees," Kubale remembers, "they had gas poured on them and were set on fire." When University of Illinois student Charles McGee heard about an experiment spearheaded by Eleanor Roosevelt to train black men as pilots, he signed up. McGee earned his wings and became one of America's first black military airmen. Known as the Tuskegee Airmen, they were highly skilled at escorting bombers to safety, and theirs are among the war's most successful missions.

Delos Diary
Delos Insider "I wanted to prove what I say, that it is the music that matters, not the instrument." So said Rosalyn Tureck, renowned pianist, whose passing was announced in yesterday's press. Her lengthy obituary included many nuggets of information not generally known. Example: Tureck made her Carnegie Hall debut playing a Bach concerto on the Theremin. This was really news to me! Relating these facts to Delos, we also believe that the music is what matters, not the instrument, and we just happen to have one of the few CDs available featuring the art of the Theremin in all its eerie splendor
DE 1014

As far as music versus instrument, the Delos catalog runs the gamut from Baroque "authentic" to modern interpretations expecially with Bach, Rosalyn Tureck's specialty. Raid your child's nursery collection and listen to Delos's Baby Needs Bach (DE 1613) to hear a wide range of Bach selections involving many different instrumental combinations.

The Fishko Files 20 years After Glenn Gould The supremely gifted and wildly eccentric pianist Glenn Gould died 20 years ago this October 4. To mark the occasion, this special edition of the Fishko Files, "20 years After Glenn Gould," examines Bach as it is played on the modern piano, especially as it has or has not been influenced by Gould's style. Distinguished pianists Murray Perahia, Vladimir Feltsman, Angela Hewitt, Edward Aldwell, Maria Tipo and Sergei Schepkin are among the participants. The program traces the rise and fall and rise of Bach on the piano, from the years of Wanda Landowska and Rosalyn Tureck, through the Gould years to the present. Ample excerpts of performances by the pianists, as well as by Gould himself, will illustrate the commentary. Glenn Gould's arresting version of the Bach Goldberg Variations, first released in the mid-1950's, brought worldwide attention to both the pianist and the composition. More recordings and performances of Bach followed, in a style so distinctive as to have all but eclipsed other Bach players of his generation. Gould famously chose the recording studio over the concert stage early in his career, declaring, "the concert is dead." Known for his peculiar work habits (most notably his obsession with temperature in the studios) and a contrarian's approach to music in general (he dismissed many of Beethoven's greatest works while becoming fascinated by Petula Clark) Gould was one of the rare classical musicians to cross over into popular consciousness. But before the world knew about the oddities of his behavior, they knew about his Bach playing. It is his performance of the music of Bach and its effect that will be examined in 20 Years after Glenn Gould.

This paper is part of a Festschrift for Manfred Clynes,
which is due to be published later this year.
Introduction
Over the years, Dr. Manfred Clynes has been kind enough to send me copies of several tapes of his performances as a pianist, recorded during some of his now very infrequent public appearances. Most outstanding among these recordings is his deeply moving interpretation of Bach's Goldberg Variations, a towering masterpiece of the keyboard literature. Indeed, it was the expressive range and transcendent beauty of Clynes' music-making, more than any of his somewhat idiosyncratic scientific writings, that gave me confidence in his work, without necessarily removing all my skepticism. Research on music generally tends to be limited by the researcher's level of musical feeling and thought. For Clynes, however, there is no such limit. After hearing a few samples of his playing, I knew that he had the ability of penetrating to the profoundest musical truths.
Clynes and the Goldberg Variations
I would like to present a few glimpses of Clynes' extraordinary art in the form of graphic analyses of a few excerpts from his performance of the Goldberg Variations. This performance was recorded live in a concert given in Sydney on September 12, 1978, and was issued on cassette tape by the American Sentic Association.

With regard to the realization of the transcription for two pianos of Bach's "Musikalisches Opfer BWV 1079", by Stefano Greco & Francesco Lotoro. [...] I have been in a position to follow the elaboration and realization of a particularly arduous project: the transcription for two pianos of Bach's "Musical Offering", a piece of work carried to completion with such competence and passion that it provokes my unconditional praise. This monument of Bach's, in the form of a piano duo, is worth bringing to the attention of all who love music [...] This noble effort does high honor to two young musicians of great talent.

Bach: Goldberg Variations > Customer Review #1: The best Goldberg, without a doubt

Like several of the previous reviewers, I have collected numerous versions of the Goldberg Variation (including three of the Tureck performances), this being my favorite piece of music in the universe. To my mind, this live performance recorded in the 80s is without a doubt, the best ever Goldberg. Like all other Tureck performances, there is extraordinary authority, integrity, and a sense of inevitability. Unlike some of her earlier and later versions, there is also is this version tremendous spontaneity and naturalness, and most of all, a sense of profound joy. The supposedly popular recordings (e.g., by Gould or Perahia) are simply not in the same league.

Widely considered to be the summit of keyboard music, it is an encyclopaedia of forms and styles, and, especially, of contrapuntal composition. Rosalyn Tureck, once called the High Priestess of Bach, has certainly marked the twentieth century with her many recordings of Bach’s keyboard music on piano. This recording, made for the BBC in 1975 and 1976, is a welcome addition to her discography. Rosalyn Tureck’s landmark 1953 recording of the Well-Tempered Clavier remains one of the milestones in the discography of Bach recordings, but this set, recorded more than twenty years later, shows the pianist at the summit of her form. Benefiting from an additional two decades of experience with this music, she gives it insights of which few pianists would be capable.
