Rosalyn Tureck
Rosalyn Tureck was a distinguished pianist whose devotion to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach lasted for over 60 years. Tureck started playing the piano when she was four years old. She took lessons with Russian pianist Sophia Brilliant-Liven, and made her public recital debut in Chicago at the age of nine. As a teenager, Tureck auditioned for the Juilliard School of Music in New York by playing most of Bach's 48 preludes and fugues from memory. Although Bach was not considered a good career choice for a concert pianist, Tureck was accepted into the school. But when she made it to the finals of the Naumburg Competition, the jury refused to give her an award for playing an all-Bach program. During her first week at Juilliard, Tureck taught herself to play the theremin . Her performance of "God Save the Queen" earned her a year-long scholarship, and her 1932 debut at Carnegie Hall consisted of playing a Bach concerto on the electronic instrument. Tureck eventually learned how to play the harpsichord and the clavichord, as well. While performing numerous Bach concerts at Town Hall in New York, Tureck created a parallel career playing recitals of Chopin, Debussy, Brahms and Beethoven with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. But her adoration of Bach's style only blossomed with time. Twenty years later, Tureck moved to London and formed the Tureck Bach Players and the International Bach Society. These projects, along with her continued performances of his work, earned Tureck the title, the

Rosalyn Tureck, a pianist and harpsichordist who played an important part in the revival of interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, and who devoted more than six decades to performing, researching, teaching and writing about his works, died on Thursday at her home in Riverdale, the Bronx. She was 88. Ms. Tureck, born in Chicago, spent many years living in London, where she acquired a regal bearing and the hint of an upper-crust British accent. She was as comfortable in literary and scientific circles as in musical ones, and was ahead of her time in arguing for a view of Bach, and of music-making, that drew on scholarship, yet was entirely nondogmatic and even fairly freewheeling. She could argue, for example, that it was crucial to understand Bach not as a modern thinker, or as the beginning of music as we know it today, but as the peak of musical development from medieval times through the Protestant Reformation. In the same discussion, though, she could speak enthusiastically about performances of Bach on electronic instruments. Early in her career, before she decided to focus entirely on Bach, she was an avid interpreter of contemporary music and a composer herself, although she did not perform her works publicly. And because she studied as a child with Jan Chiapusso, a Dutch-Italian concert pianist born in Java, she was introduced to the sounds of the gamelan and a variety of Asian and African instruments decades before the current interest in world music.

PRESS EXTRACTS 1999
Liberation, 04/03/1999 Rosalyn Tureck, from the Other Side of Bach, by Eric Danan
Rosalyn Tureck has just created an event by recording her first record for Deutsche Grammophon. As a result people are currently hurrying into the theatres of Europe, to hear the woman through whom the truth about Bach happens. Midi Libre, 18/02/99 Rosalyn Tureck in the gardens of JS Bach - Rémy Loury An album which will assuredly join the ranks of the most precious in the great record collections of those mad about music. The result is a shining exploration of the innumerable possiblities offered by Bach: the majestic entrance of the first variation, the brave sharp notes of the fourth, the ornamental refinements of the seventh, the impenetrable sweetness of the fifteenth, the fascinating and visionary sarabande on the twenty-fifth. Each variation has its life, perfectly autonomous, but attached to a whole from which one would not know how to detach it. And at the end of this, as after a silence that only music can offer, one finds the the initial theme again, just as destabilising as the return of a dear one believed gone forever.
