Business of Music Performance Conference
October 26 to 29, 2001
Calling all musicians, all street-corner buskers, aspiring symphony players and future rock stars! Come down from your ivory towers, up from your orchestra pits, and out of your parents’ garages. Take a break from practising! Pick up some tips on making a living in the cut-throat business of music! If you’ve ever been told, Music is all very well, but you need a real job to pay the rent , this conference is for you. It’s packed with seminars, performances, piano master classes, and career counselling sessions. This is your chance to find out what Mailshots are (they have nothing to do with spy photography) and to learn what Collateral is (no, it’s not an agreement to sell your soul for fame and fortune, hard though such an offer might be for a struggling musician to refuse.) In the Business Exhibits will provide an opportunity to meet representatives from the local Musicians' Association and a variety of other music organizations and businesses.

Niagara Concerts Can't Get Enough of Stratton
Brings Philharmonia to Falls on Sunday
JOHN LAW The rousing orchestra and its flamboyant conductor have made several trips to the Kingston College auditorium (formerly Niagara Falls secondary school), and have made every visit count. Now, Niagara Concerts president Ann Speedie doesn't hesitate to call them the highlight of the 2001/2002 season. "It's a very responsive crowd," Stratton says of his Niagara Falls faithful. "All of our soloists, without any exception, have enjoyed playing to the audience in Niagara Falls." Stratton makes his grand return Sunday at 2 p.m., conducting the 55-piece Philharmonia through a variety of romantic classics. He'll be joined by world-renowned pianist Alexander Tselyakov for a Rachmaninoff concerto. Stratton loves taking music on the road. And not just for gigs in Europe, North America and Asia, but also to smaller communities throughout Ontario. The orchestra shouldn't just be a big city luxury, says Stratton.

Even the briefest glance at the spring programme for Music at the University of Leicester reveals a rich variety of entertainment, from internationally acclaimed musicians to the infectious enthusiasm of student concerts. Global Variations (9 March) promises to be an occasion to remember, with an exuberant mix of the University’s Big Band, Wind Band, Umoja Gospel Choir, the Choral and Orchestral Societies and – unlikely as it sounds - the Modern Languages Choir, known and loved for its Christmas and summer concerts under the baton of the inimitable Robert Kenny. Martyn Hill returns to the University to take the part of the Evangelist in J S Bach’s St John Passion (16 February) and the University Sinfonia includes a premiere of Luke Ottevenger’s The Chant of Camus as well as Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto with pianist Ron Abramski (2 February). Wednesday Lunchtime Concerts include leader of the Lindsays Peter Cropper, and Leon Bosch, one of the foremost double bass players of our time, as well as musicians with a Leicester connection, The Courtenay String Quartet, and David Bretherton, pianist. Among the Richard Attenborough Centre Soundbites on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime, many are given by local musicians and display a variety of musical styles from classical to blues, jazz and folk.
