Pianist Alexander Tselyakov appeared in recital last night at the Petit Trianon in San Jose. This event was sponsored by “Steinway Society, the Bay Area.” Mr. Tselyakov announced from the stage during his encores that he will be appearing at Carnegie Hall on January 20.
The program was an interesting one consisting entirely of Russian composers. We heard Tchaikovsky’s Variations in F Major, Scriabin’s Deux Poemes, Album Leaf and Etude in D# Minor, several shorter pieces by Rachmaninoff in addition to the Sonata No. 2 in B-flat Minor, and finally to end the program: Shchedrin’s Sonata No. 1. Performing at the Petit Trianon, a hall with a capacity of approximately 300, is an intimate affair. Although the audience numbered about 260 people, it is significant, however, that Mr. Tselyakov treated the occasion as though he were playing for 2600 people at Carnegie Hall. Climaxes were so overpowering that several people early in the concert right after the Scriabin D# Minor Etude moved from the front row to the rear of the hall. The house piano is a very fine Steinway B, and although we have to admire its many sterling qualities, it obviously lacks the full, resonant bass that a nine-foot Steinway D can provide. Mr. Tselyakov was therefore strutting his stuff in a Buick, while he actually needed a Cadillac.

Pianist Alexander Tselyakov Le Petiti Trianon - San Jose
Pianist Alexander Tselyakov

Alexander Tselyakov, yet another Russian with impressive credentials, appeared in a solo recital in San Jose at Le Petit Trianon on Friday evening, November 3. Tselyakov, a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory, and a laureate in the 1986 Tchaikowsky International Piano Competition, is an impressive pianist. Displaying a technique that is powerful and all encompassing, it would seem that there is virtually nothing that he cannot do at the keyboard. But, therein lies a problem, for during this concert his virtuosity constantly got in the way of the music.
The concert began with Mozart's Sonata in F Major, K.332, and it certainly began well. However, on the first page, when the Sturm und Drang passage in D minor marked forte entered, Tselyakov played so loudly that ugly, jarring sounds emanated from the piano that marred the lovely mood he had initially created. This was to be a characteristic that recurred often during this concert. It was also obvious that Tselyakov is not aware of some of the finer aspects of Mozart scholarship, for he consistently played appoggiaturas like crushed grace notes in the first movement of the Mozart and in the second movement opted for the autograph version of the recapitulation rather than the splendidly ornamented version from the revised first edition- certainly one of the most glorious examples of Mozart's skill as an improviser. Otherwise, Tselyakov's playing in the slow movement was lovely. A beautiful cantabile and exquisitely shaped phrases demonstrated how very beautifully he can play when he is not trying to showing off his splendid technique.

Even though the classical music world is blessed with many pianists of great artistry, the combination of technical virtuosity and interpretive sensitivity in Tselyakov's playing results in performances of unique and astonishing beauty. Tselyakov's career began in Russia's most prestigious music schools, leading eventually to the great recital stages and orchestral houses of the old Soviet empire. By the 1980's, his touring schedule had been complemented by several prestigious awards, including prizes at both the Tokyo and Tchaikovsky Competitions. He was appointed concert solo pianist with the Byelorussian State Philharmonic Orchestra, and assistant-professor of music at the renowned Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and later professor of the Byelorussian State Conservatory By 1991, he had toured as a soloist in Japan, Korea, Germany, Italy, Israel, Spain, Portugal and Finland. After moving with his family to Israel in 1991, Tselyakov continued to impress audiences and critics alike. Several more important prizes followed, including two in Italy alone. He was also honoured by giving recitals for such dignitaries as Mikhail Gorbachev and the late Yizhak Rabin.

A lexander Tselyakov will be the Ladies' Morning Musical Club's guest on April 22. Prizewinner at the Tokyo (in 1983) and Tchaikovsky (in 1986) competitions, this Russian pianist, member of a musical family, now makes his home in Toronto. Called by critics "phenomenal," "a brilliant virtuoso," but also "a fine original colorist," he still retains the influence of the Russian tradition of virtuosity and lushness of sound. He has recorded CDs, done several radio broadcasts and performs regularly here and abroad. Despite his grueling touring schedule — he spends 10 to 12 hours practicing, but still finds it is not enough! — he was able to spare a few moments and granted La Scena Musicale this interview. La Scena Musicale: Why did you choose the piano? Alexander Tselyakov: I started piano when I was four years old. My mother was my first teacher. Being very creative, she tried to find different ways to make piano lessons interesting and enjoyable. For example, she drew pictures and asked me to draw as well, told me stories and asked me create stories about what I played. More importantly she taught me to work hard. Like any kid, I wanted to play outside with my friends instead of spending hour after hour playing the piano. However, she was strict with me and I am thankful for that. I had my first recital when I was six years old, playing Tchaikovsky's

Info : (514) 842-9951.

FREDERIC CHIU
January 12, 2002 Born and raised in America by Chinese immigrant parents and a long-time resident of France, Frederic Chiu’s cosmopolitan background brings a unique, humanist approach to his music-making. “He has reinvented virtuosity…a phenomenon that must be heard” (LeMonde, Paris). After studies at Indiana University, in piano with Karen Shaw and also in Computer Science, and at the Juilliard School, Frederic Chiu began his career in Paris, and has become one of the most well-known American pianists playing in France. He has performed in most of the major European cities: Rome, Milan, Brussels, Antwerp, Berlin, Frankfurt, the Hague, Warsaw, Prague, and London. He performs regularly in Asia (Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China) as well as in Africa. In North America, Mr. Chiu has played in the Mostly Mozart Festival in new York, at the Ambassador Theatre in Pasadena, and Place des Arts in Montreal. He plays regularly at Lincoln Center in New York, and is a perennial guest of the acclaimed Newport Music Festival. He has traveled across the United States on extended recital tours with Community Concerts. A recipient of many prestigious awards – the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Petscheck Award, and the American Pianists Association Fellowship – it was the lack of a certain award that first brought him international notoriety; in a rare foray into the competition circuit, his elimination before the final round of the 1993 Van Cliburn Competition roused enormous protest; prominent stories in the New York Times referred to him as the “Maverick American Pianist.”

Canada is fortunate to have Russian-Canadian pianist Alexander Tselyakov amongst its resident artists, currently an Associate Professor of Music at Brandon University’s School of Music. His recently available CD, “Russian Album” is filled with an impressive program of both familiar and the concert-hall neglected works, affording music lovers everywhere with the chance of enjoying his talent and expanding their horizons. All but one (Dolin’s sturdy Toccata) were recorded just over three years ago in Germany. And, while the sound is crisp and clean, a slightly closer presence and a tad more reverb would give this wonderful collection a better aural footing compared to its peers. But that’s a quibble it’s the performances that count most!
