We always attend a concert in the hope that a significant musical event will take place, and that the artist performing will weave a web of magic to stimulate our feelings and our intellect. Unfortunately, Jean-Yves Thibaudet's recital for the Carmel Music Society on January 11 at Sunset Center in Carmel left these expectations largely unfufilled.
From any viewpoint, it was a curious program. The first half consisted of Debussy's Preludes, Book II, and the second half contained familiar short works by Chopin. The entire program consisted of 25 short pieces, none of which was over six minutes long, and some were as short as a minute or two. There was not one major work on the entire program. Although you might argue that the second book of Debussy Préludes constitutes an extended suite, in truth, in Thibaudet's performance, the Préludes remained static miniatures that limped along on a parallel course and did not achieve a powerful cumulative effect. Debussy's Préludes Book II display a much more adventurous harmonic language than those in Book I, and the polytonality of the opening

One of Ren©e Fleming's latest CDs available for buying is called "Night Songs." The CD opens with a very pretty rendition of "Clair de Lune," a french piece by Faure about how falling in love by moonlight can be very victorious. Prehaps one of the most famous takes on the french poem, Fleming does a superb job on the intervals and the entire song itslef. Fleming's voice shines on the Faure pieces, her beautiful soprano floating through each one. Prehaps one of the ost stunning of the french pieces is Faure's most famous art song, "Apres un reve." (After a dream) The way she floats through the whole song makes it look like it is a very easy song to sing, but really, it is quite the opposite. It taks alot of breath support, which Ren©e does an excellent job of handling. Not only did she record some of the more popular pieces, but she also recorded some of the lesser heard selections, such as both takes on the "Mandoline" by Debussy and Faure. Her smoothness on this lighter take of the Faure is amazing, and her ability to carry it through with emotion is also quite impressive. She also sings the bouncier take of Debussy on the "Mandoline." This song is extremely hard, but Ren©e manages to pull it off. An excellent job!

Web Search On the Aisle INDEX Thibaudet to Die For By Philip Anson / February 7, 2001 On the Aisle Jean Yves Thibaudet Carnegie Hall Feb. 7, 2001 French pianist Jean Yves Thibaudet made a triumphant Carnegie Hall solo debut on Feb. 7 with an all-French program that will be remembered as one of the highlights of the concert year. Thibaudet has played many concertos at Carnegie Hall, most recently a rather lacklustre Ravel Concerto for the Left Hand with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (Oct. 21, 2000), but his solo debut at 39 years of age has been long-overdue. The program concluded with a breathtaking performance of Regard de l’eglise d’amour, the last movement of Olivier Messiaen’s Vingt regards sur l’enfant Jesus. Thibaudet dissected the technical difficulties with astounding precision, and served up the morsels of Messiaen’s holy music like a priest or chef. Greeted by a well merited ovation, Thibaudet played several delicious encores: Liszt’s transcription of Isolde’s Liebestod from Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde", a Chopin waltz, and two works by Duke Ellington and Bill Evans. It all ended too soon, this rollercoaster ride of emotions from funereal tragedy to jazzy joy.

Debussy Das Soloklavierwerk, Folge 2: Etüden, Images u. a. Jean-Yves Thibaudet (Klavier) Decca/Universal 460 247-2
